If you look at the photo of their 2019 defense against Memphis, the guy in the slot is Lamont Wade #38. 199Lbs and listed as a safety.

Nice find. Thing about Smith is that yeah, we've got a bunch of safeties committed already, but he's a DAMN good player who's highly regarded in that state and also by the way being recruited by A&M and UGA. In a world in which there is no 25-signee limit and where we might have spots under the 85 (stipulating that we'll leave room for the portal) I would love to see us keep him warm and see if there is room. The roster just isn't to the point where we should be turning away talent at any position other than maybe QB at this point.

Agreed. Sometimes kids come in as safeties and grow into elite LBs too. Some positions aren't versatile enough to bring in multiple (nose guards for example), but safeties are.
