Z is fine. He was running around the parking lot laughing with the big bracket board. He said "I am taking this home tonight with me". His legs have taken a beaten the past 4 weeks. The comeback from Hoover is still very visible and another bruise faded and almost gone.
Z's hats have never stayed on his teeny tiny head. They order the smallest possible. We use to safety pin or needle and thread the hat. One game, we stuffed dryer sheets in the fold. Not sure why his hats have never been addressed. Tonight it caused problems. I hope this weekend something can be done about it ⚾🍊⚾

When he got hit by the come backer, from my point of view that game was over. I hate he had to take one for the team, but I have a suspicion any of them would take one for him. Good day all around today. Glad he’s okay.

GBO!!!

Just walking in the door after a long weekend of great Vols baseball! Glad he is doing good! That was a scary moment. Kid is tough as nails!

So thankful that he’s ok. He’s tough inside and out! Nike needs to make a custom hat for Z. Should name it XZ.

From CTV's post game interview: "Whatever happened there with Zander seemed to kind of flip the script a little bit. Everybody decided if this guy’s going to get hit with a line missile and stay out here and compete and also be willing to kind of have that Zander smile like he always does, then we should probably relax a little bit, but also compete the way that he is. Again, I think it flipped a little bit."

"He’s a hockey fan, and I don’t know if I should do this anymore, but we mess around at practice and I use the fungo bat as a hockey stick and he’s the goalie. I actually hit him on the knee, and he had a knee save the other day. Maybe we should not do that anymore. He’s a tough kid in his own way. He’s the definition of a quirky lefty, a lovable kid and a great teammate. Somehow, it’s kind of odd how he gets out there and is as much of a competitor as Hunter Ensley and Cal Stark. It’s been fun to be around him, and it’s been really cool to see him evolve as a pitcher in each year that he’s here. That’s why I think our guys have faith in him. You can tell our fans take to him like they do to Charlie (Taylor) as well, and he’s earned that. He’s certainly competitive."
CTV eloquently describing why Volnation loves Z. Gritty players who might not have MLB tools (TBD) but you can’t measure the heart, passion, determination, and desire of players like Z, Cal, Hunter, and Kirby. I hope UT continues to recruit and develop guys like these VFLs because they are the heart and soul of the team! GBO

One of the hardest hit balls I’ve ever seen hit a pitcher. I’ve never witnessed LNS so quiet. It was scary to witness Zander being down seemingly motionless and hurt. When he got up, LNS exploded. He’s one of the gutsiest players and that’s one of the most awesome performances I’ve seen in a long time! Z is a gamer and it was such a pleasure to witness his greatness!
In 1993, I saw Vol great Chris Freeman take a ball off his face and fracture his jaw early in first game at the SEC East Tournament in Columbia, SC against Vanderbilt.

He was the ace of the staff and was done for the rest of the game - and the weekend.
He did come back to pitch in regional (6 teams then) with his jaw wired shut.

That was obviously the worst I saw in person.

@greasemachine, hate to bring it up, but you and I were, by chance, seated next to one another at supers game 3 two years ago. I ended up consoling a crying 10-year old and the last thing you said to me was that you had to go throw up. Fast forward two years and I can’t tell you how honored I was to be there to see Z ABSOLUTELY DOMINATE in game 3. Today, he left no doubt and we need not worry (too much), it was a party!!!

Similar for me. 2019 and Crochet took one off the face. Scary situation. Broken jaw and wired shut. Pitched in the regional at UNC shortly thereafter.

I am worn out!
I’m still wet from last night, my hands hurt from clapping so much, my voice is gone, my back hurts, my feet hurt, I’m pretty sure I threw out my shoulder, ringing up a batter on one of Z’s punchouts...but damn it was a blast!
It was after midnight before we got home last night and the first thing my boy did, was put his Zander autographed card, in his display case with his favorite memorabilia!
A very special person made the last 2 weekends extremely awesome for a little guy who is very special to me and I will never forget it!
Much respect to you @greasemachine , you know Z has always been one of my guys and like the professor said, it was an honor to be there and to watch you guys take it all in!!

I know I've said this elsewhere, but I can't tell you how enjoyable this season has been and Zander is a huge part of that. My season tickets had to be moved prior to the season, so I moved down next to the dugout- the first base end right next to where Zander, Kirby, Woody/Zach, etc all stand. We're right there on the net.

A lot of other, more visible, players will get credit as leaders or what have you...but Zander (and Kirby) are the soul of this team.

I missed two midweek games. That was it. In all that baseball, their attitudes never changed. Hot/cold, rainy/sunny, 15 runs ahead or down 10... they're just down there being themselves. The other guys watch them...particularly the gang of younger pitchers that stand in the middle of the rail. I've seen it with my own eyes. Their vibe permeates the whole team. They're locked in and intense, but also absolutely unbothered and having fun.

I am genuinely proud that they represent our school and our state.
