I'm in the Philippines rn and they build main thoroughfares with nothing but hand tools. They construct 3-story buildings out of concrete and they use no cranes. The #1 industry is sugar cane which people cut with a machete for 12 hours straight and carry it over the shoulder for $2. They think you are a ***** :)

It's all relative. You do what you have to

Exactly.. but a lot nowadays won't do that.

Being nosey, why are you there? My pastor is wanting some of us to go over next year to help a local missionary we support for a week.

We have a virtual team here for work and i am training some people.

Filipinos are the salt of the earth. So nice, happy, and polite. They also love Americans. It's crazy...i've literally seen 7 white people here. My boss brought his little daughter and they've never seen blonde girls. Everybody at the park just huddled around her and they just wanted to touch her like she was wearing the shroud of turin.

From the guy we support over there, they sound like good, hardworking people. He's Filipino, and a great guy.

Me-40, my dad- 60 something. Both grew up here in Iowa working the farms, construction, etc. He could still whip my ass, but he would have to catch me first! I also have a lot of respect for my elders, so would never be in a fight with my dad anyway. The generation coming up today, including my teenage son, don't seem to have that respect. I have tried to instill it in my son, but he still gets pretty mouthy sometimes, things I would have never said to my dad, and he has to be put in his place. Worst thing going for these young kids is not getting spanked, the belt, or a good old backhand like we used to.

So why don't you hit him like your parents did you?

How do you know his parents "hit" him? Lots of ways to discipline a child. And you say it like it's a dirty word. Spank... whip.. and several others would work. I have and do spank my children. I also use other means to discipline my kids. Is there something you see wrong with it?

I tie mine up with barbed wire, pour syrup on them, and dump a quart jar of fire ants on their heads

Well, he rued the lack of hitting as the demise of strength in young people, so I assumed that his parents hit him.

Spank, switch, belt, it's all hitting. Let's call a spade a spade. I was spanked as a kid, and I'll spank my kids too.

Whoa dude. Maybe you learned respect for your elders and maybe it worked for you, but it definitely doesn't work for everybody. There are worse things than a little lack of respect....like my four sisters still resenting my mom 2 decades after she beat the **** out of me. I got over it that week. Not everybody responds to violence with respect.

You're fine. I just think parents should look in the mirror when they complain about how soft their kids are. Then again there is probably a good reason why we don't raise our kids the same way our parents raised us and their parents raised them.

I say this not having any kids, but i don't think i'd spank, partly bc it didn't work on me. Time out/grounding was much worse

I'd choose spanking over that any day. Get it over with! Though spanking from my dad worked on me.

We all want better things for our kids. We sacrifice and do the things we do hoping that they won't have to. But I also think we do them a disservice if we don't expose them to hard work/labor and discipline. We home school our kids because we travel a lot with my work so on the days that they get done with school work they do help me pull nails and stack boards. I'm sure there are days that they hate me for it. I am tough on them and I do demand respect and discipline from them.. because life will be hard on them too. They may fail in life..I'm sure they will at some things buy it WON'T be because I didn't prepare them for how hard it will be.

I love them and sometimes it's a struggle to be loving and caring and a disciplinarian too but I would be letting them down if I wasn't tough on them at times.

I think children's respect has more to do with the personalities of the parents than it does the kind of discipline they use. I know great kids that were never spanked and i know terrible kids that were hit all the time.
