Absolutely correct. Mark emmert was his coverAnother factor with Saban retiring was Emmert’s resignation. I suspected Nick would not be far behind as his cover for cheating was gone. Alabama’s model for dynasties under Bear and Saban. Hire coaches that are beyond reproach by NCAA or rig the system as Saban did (See Emmert). Then cheat and steal championships. It’s that simple.
Do you want to hug himWhat's that based on? In 9 years as a head coach he is 104-12 in his 2 seasons at Washington he lost 3 games total. Bro has one of the most impressive resumes I have ever seen on a first-time SEC coach. He will at worst be a good coach. Second, his first few hires were extremely smart and covered up one of the biggest weaknesses he had coming in (recruiting the south and Alabama) he kept 2 of the top recruiters from Sabans staff and maybe most importantly convinced Grubb to follow him as OC to Bama instead of taking the head coaching job in Washington and also brought their freshman all America center along to replace the guy that probably lost Bama the game to Michigan in the playoffs.
Yeah, this guy has to prove it but his resume and moves say do not underestimate him. I'd bet you money that when Saban was first hired at LSU in 2000 people were saying the same thing about him. He'd also never coached in the south before then. underestimating opponents if how you get embarrassed. Until it's proven on the field otherwise, he is a threat.
giving players cars from his dealership dosnt have the value it did before nil.Saban's saw the writing. Its no longer possible to compile a 3 deep lineup of star football players simply because of NIL. Every player must be re-recruited every year, the top players re-recruited several times each year as offers come in. NIL money is available and the players are going to spread out to get that money. It must be daily chaos to try and hold a team together.
Yes... and lets HOPE nothing really rough ever happens again in America, like a world war, with these new softer generations. They dont hand out participation awards for those sorts of things.Kids in all sports are softer than they used to be..... because they are enabled. Things get tough they bounce. It is just the reality of things. It is why the Primes and Kiffins are the future of coaching to some extent and the Sabans are outdated. Kinda how Bobby Knight got sent to pasture. Different generations.
I would agree with you for sure.. except. it's the state capital...and the second biggest metro population to New Orleans. Remember the perspective of a person that lives in a place is a lot different from those outside. People who live in a place tend to move around less than visitors. I used to think Chattanooga (my home) was a podunk until I moved away and returned.. the perspective changes when you remove yourself from it. When I lived in Atlanta I knew adults who had never really left Bankhead their whole lives.Interesting take. Time will tell. I do have a question - how is Baton Rouge anything but a drive through dump? I was born and raised there - went to high school there - and was blessed to go to Tennessee for college.
I’m not going to dig on Baton Rouge too hard in public…. But I’ve never considered it a destination and am genuinely curious as to what people think?
I lived in Atlanta for over 40 years and moved back to East Tennessee 24 years ago. When I moved back, I realized that East Tennessee is a paradise and hope to stay here forever. In our community of about 700 homes, families from all over the Nation, from California, New England, the Mid West to the north West are amazed and excited about Living in EAST Tennessee and would not condor moving back to their previous locations. The biggest problem with many residents of East Tennessee is they do not realize what a wonderful place we live in, when compared to other parts of the U. S.I would agree with you for sure.. except. it's the state capital...and the second biggest metro population to New Orleans. I lived in Lafayette and Baton Rouge is kind of yuck and I hated driving over that bridge! .. Lafayette is pretty nice, though.. All in all, Louisiana is a pretty cool place to live, but all of the good food will make you fatInteresting take. Time will tell. Nobody wants to hear this cold as$ take. Now is our chance to regain the edge. We must capitalize on their vulnerability.A lot of people think that Saban leaving means all of a sudden Alabama is immediately gonna suck. I posit that is the furthest thing from the truth. I think that him leaving saved Alabama from a bigger collapse. DO I think Deboer will have the same Dynasty? Heck no. But Saban saw the writing on the wall. He wanted nothing to do with NIL/PORTAL and he has been witnessing the pussification of modern sports that's been happening for the last 20 years. It was bad enough before NIL/PORTAL. Kids are softer, they cant take hard coaching. They don't want to wait their turn. This is a generation fully immersed in the participation award era. Why is he getting this I'm not, even though he is working and producing and I'm not. This is the world we live in. Had Saban Stayed within a couple years there would have been a big downturn. Deboer gives a chance to mitigate that.
Will Deboer be the next Saban? Not likely we wont see another coach like that for a long time if ever. The dynasty he built can't be replicated as things stand now especially not at Alabama. They do not and won't have a collective to compete toe to toe with the big dogs. Tuscaloosa is not a place people want to go to. When is the last time someone was like 'hey lets hop in the car and go to Tuscaloosa' for anything but a football game or elope with their 3rd cousin? The interesting story is NIL/PORTAL era favors the UT's and LSU more than any other SEC schools because comparatively, they are the only schools not in drive-through towns. Vandy is in Nashville but does not count. Ole Miss is an outlier because they got money anyway. There is a reason Spyre is one of the top collectives. If UT was located in Johnson City it would be a completely different story. Knoxville, Nashville, Austin, Baton Rouge are destination cities comparatively to other SEC cities.
ATHENS, GA
AUBURN, AL
BATON ROUGE, LA <--LSU
BRYAN, TX
COLLEGE STATION, TX
COLUMBIA, MO
COLUMBIA, SC
FAYETTEVILLE, AR
GAINESVILLE, FL
LEXINGTON, KY
NASHVILLE, TN<-- Vandy
OXFORD, MS
STARKVILLE, MS
TUSCALOOSA, AL
KNOXVILLE, TN <--UT
I think Saban leaving ends a dynasty but Alabama will still be a top SEC team for a long time coming. I think UT is in a position to rise to the top because of Spyre and the city of Knoxville. It's a good location, geographically. Has a decent culture. Mild weather year-round comparatively. it is a big enough place that there is access to everything one could want. It is small enough that you're not worrying about getting mugged every time you leave home. No, I am not from Knoxville, I am a proud Chattanoogan. I remember as a youngster in the 80's and 90's I was not interested on any level in going to Knoxville because there was a stigma about that part of the state. Things have changed a lot and Knoxville in the late 90's and 2000's changed a lot (for the better imo).. like the rest of the world.
There are a lot of things we can't affect as fans but one thing we can affect directly is the cities we live in. All you guys up in Knoxville keep doing what you're doing and those of us who can, support Spyre, and good things will happen.
DC retired, WR coach needed replacing, players walking in demanding $1,000,000, 72yrs old, SEC changing, I think are all contributing factors on what led him to walk. He was a couple of wins from 300, he was 2minutes from beating UM and would have beaten UW. He is old and tired and disappointed where CFB is at and going so time to get out.
TrueKids in all sports are softer than they used to be..... because they are enabled. Things get tough they bounce. It is just the reality of things. Great analogy except Bama got what they wanted. Lago didn’t. One of my favorite CE movies thou bAgree that he got tired, but as I stated previously, he started the big bucks running college football with his unlimited money and resources given to him to get him to come to Bama.
Ever seen the movie “High Plains Drifter”? The town got in such a terrible bind that they had to sell out and agree to give Clint Eastwoods character ANYTHING he wanted to save the town. Plug in Alabama as the town, Saban as Clint Eastwood, there you go. Total control. No repercussions from ANYBODY at UA. Was able to do ANYTHING he needed to do to get a team of players some pro teams would be envying in order to have such a competitive advantage over every team they played, no one could compete on a regular basis. Bama played right up to the edge of rules , hiring dozens of additional coaches as ANALYSTS After a few nattys, Clemson popped up with similar talent, then UGA, OSU joined the professional ranks, SEC schools got record payouts, coaches were given millions of dollars to walk away or given record contracts. Now players are demanding a piece of the pie and now we have professionals playing college football.
Bottom line is Saban turned Bama into a professional run football team, eventually a few others joined the ranks and now it will never be the same.
