My University is nearly gone

I wonder if it's the same university I went to which hosts sex week and bans Christmas parties

There used to be this great late night, maybe all night restaurant that would deliver food to campus and they had great fries, and like fried mushrooms, and I think they would even deliver cookies or brownies(not the good ones) too. For the life of me I can't remember the name of it. It closed some 10 years ago. If I'm remembering correctly it was a tiny place on the inside I don't even think it had seats it was carryout or delivery.

I want to say Oscars or something like that.

My dorm is still there...for now. Greeve Hall.
Next time you pass it, look for the window with "Whit / CASE" on it. That's me! I put those stickers on the window first day of college in August 1999 and they're still there.

That was mine, too. If they were gonna tear down a dorm, that would have been a good one.

Here's one from waaayyyyy back. The Quarterback. I think in the spot that was the Longbranch before it moved across the street in order to put up Regions Bank.

And another pizza place just east of Stefano's. I think that it was called Antonio's.

$1.99 pitchers and Blue Whales

That brick building at the SW corner of 17th and Cumberland that had a Pizza Hut. The bar in the back would have a different name every couple of years. I think that it was called The End Zone for a while. A short walk to Greve Hall.

Brothers. Two yrs on 5th floor and one on 4th. My first year was 82 and had a room that looked towards Volunteer. Every night we had a fireworks show from the Worlds Fair. Moved down to the 4th floor and had a room to myself. I was at the very end of the floor on the side towards the Library. Reason I say that side is that was the time they were remaking the library. I would be awakened every morning by the sounds of jack hammers. Keep in mind this was before AC was put in so we had to leave our windows open so it just amplified in. And I cant believe we didnt have AC.

But wouldnt have traded my three years there for anything. I knew everyone on the floor and we all kept our doors open. The friends I met there are some of my best friends and still run around with them today some 30+ years later.

Lots and lots of stories from that dorm.......

Yosemite Sam's on the strip for pool and beer (and maybe a pickled egg) after class on Friday! Cumberland Tap Room for beer and pong (where one of the most significant streakfests in the universe began). Ruby's late on Saturday nights in the greenroom for drinks and backgammon. Ruby's was such a cool place before it went all fanchisie on us.

There was also that little pizza place in the northwest corner of Shelbourne. Good ol' Judy always gave me free pizza and beer.

there's something about that chili on those SM hot dogs that was unbelievable. Most likely the secret ingredient was crack because once you ate one you'll crave them.

I've seen internet rumors off and on that they are trying to restart. If any of you in Knoxville find out they are reopening please post it.

We always stopped there on our way to the mountains.

Wonder why it is at some universities the Halls stand for a century but UT has to tear them down?

Heck, I've been around the UK campus for only 20 years and it's changed incredibly. Espcially in the last five years. Student center gone. Old frat houses gone. Massive new dorms. Lots of the classic stuff from the 60s survived but many old halls are leveled.

Governments have to spend their budgets so they have at least that much in the next cycle. Bid out those contracts... keep the money flowing.

So I attended UT 1975-1979. I lived in Carrick Hall for two years and then in Andy Holt apartments two years. Both were relatively new buildings and the Presidential Complex was the place to be. I spent a lot of time at the Student Center my freshman year (you know - before I got new friends) going to movies, bowling, shooting pool. I attended every basketball game at Stokely Athletic Center and knew a few jocks that lived in Gibbs Hall. I actually did some school work while there and spent many a late night at the library. Loved to go to Strong Hall for the burgers.

Well, Stokely is gone. Andy Holt is gone. Student Center is gone. Strong Hall is gone. Rest of Presidential Complex is about to be gone. Gibbs Hall is gone. Library is buried somewhere inside a newer, bigger library. I guess every 40-50 years these makeovers happen. But not a whole lot left for me to go back and show my grandkids.

"Time stops for no one" - so true.

Never got to see a game in Stokely. TBA is great when we're winning big, but its got no soul at all when we struggle. If we ever try and replace Neyland, it'll feel like somebody died.

:hi: I was there 1974 - 1978. I lived on the third floor of Carrick, then Humes, then Morrill (sp?) then off-campus in West Knoxville. I think we share many of the same memories. Back then, we didn't tailgate on campus, we walked up and down "The Strip" before the games...there were bands and parties and people everywhere! I loved the Maltese Falcon and that little deli across the hall. Many nights we'd go for a steamed turkey n cheese on white!
