Nathan Niehaus has left the team

Why would he? Why don’t you take the kids letter of why he doesn’t play anymore? Besides, HIPPA laws prevent you from talking about that.

Why wouldn’t he? The fact that Pruitt hasn’t come out and say that Nathan Niehaus is medically retiring from football is weird. And I read his letter and I respect it and his desxion. But when the coach doesn’t give the same reason the players is
Giving for leaving the team then it makes me wonder wtf is going on. I’m not saying Nathan isn’t hurt, just odd that Pruitt hasn’t phrased it as career ending injury, or medical retirement

Here is his statement addressing the decision to leave. Maybe this puts an end to speculation...

“All good things must come to an end. The University of Tennessee and the game of football have been nothing short of blessings and much cherished gifts that will always have a place in my heart. However, due to sustained injuries and the overlapping wear on my body, I have decided to retire from the game that has taken me places that I never could have imagined. It was my decision to start the process of finishing my college education and finally chase the career of my dreams. Coach (Phillip) Fulmer, (Jeremy) Pruitt, (Jim) Chaney and (Will) Friend have only been supportive and encouraging of their players, and I thank them for the lessons learned within such a short period of time. As well as Coach (Craig) Fitzgerald and his assistants, head trainer Jeronimo (Boche) and team physicians, you will not find a more dedicated group of people that are the absolute best at their craft. Not only lessons on the field and in the weight room, but lessons of competitive drive to handle the speed of life no matter the cost. Most of all, Vol Nation, thank you for your endless love and support even through the absolute worst of times, and I hope this decision shows the true value of the greatest fans on earth!”

I’d be curious to hear what his injury was. Funny that we have a training staff on hand to deal with players health, and no one mentioned he had any health problems until he just didn’t show up to practice.
Sure, they mention player health problems so often. How much about Trey’s health has ever been said? Virtually nothing.
Get over it.

Bless the kid and may he have only good fortune.

Speculation on my part: I wonder if CJP's more rigorous training routine is weeding out the unwilling and unables to handle it?

Read what he said. "...sustained injuries and overlapping wear on my body..." That means he probably did not have a "major career-ending" some of you keep looking for. The kid was sick and tired of being sick and tired. Let him move on, and we should do the same.

Every other player that retired for medical reasons had it mentioned by Pruitt when they left.

Some of you guys need to do a little self-inventory before taking another shot at the kid. He is having to give up football -- which he's dedicated a huge chunk of his life to --for health reasons, and there are a bunch of grown men giving him a hard time.

Read his statement, then log off if you feel like disparaging him.

That is a nice statement and good luck to him. It does leave me wondering what he is pursuing?

Exactly, why vilify him? He obviously feels like he can’t continue to play the game due to wear and tear. Let hem be and thanks for trying. Kid never got in trouble and tried to help best that he could. Just let him go and move on.

Because maybe the player did and Coach has better things to do than rehash exactly what the kid said? He doesn’t have to appease every fans wish, just win games

Pruitt didn't give a reason so there can be no differences!

It doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to realize a player doesn't go from cleared for practice to medically retired by the training staff in one day. Obviously it was his call and not supported or endorsed by the training staff. That is obvious from that observation and from Pruitt's comments.

But if observing the obvious is considered disrespectful to the kid, I'm happy to let the topic die. It doesn't matter. He contributed more to the sport of football than 99.9% of players ever will, got 4 years of school paid for, and can now turn the chapter into the rest of his life. Meanwhile, we move on to the 2019 season.

The disrespectful part is assuming it has to be some dark sinister reason that no one is talking about.

His statement didn't say he wasn't medically cleared. It didn't say he was currently injured. It seemed pretty clear that he just got tired of dealing with constant injuries and hours with the training staff.

Whatever his math was, it simply wasn't worth it to him to continue for the reward he anticipated seeing. He isn't transferring. He's retiring according to his statement. "I don't want to be in pain all the time any more"... is a pretty good reason to stop doing something.

Where's your kid playin?

Lmao, y’all are really hurt about this I can see. I myself am not s$&@$$$ on Nathan Niehaus in any way. Just stating that’s it odd the coach isn’t backing up what the player said. Pruitt said Niehaus has left the team, he didn’t say he left the team for medical reasons. CJP’s statement on this makes it odd Given all the medical experts they have on staff. If Pruitt ain’t backing up what Niehaus says, then that’s a red flag to me and yeah I’m gonna talk about it. This bull spit about me crapping on the kid is a waste of time and y’all know it.

That very well may be true, but you have to admit it’s odd that Pruitt isn’t saying medical reasons is why he left. And damn straight winning games is all that matters for CJP. But here on vol nation we have discussions, so I don’t know why some people seem to get their feelings hurt with this discussion. I’ve said nothing sinister about Niehaus and I wish him and his family the best in all their future endeavors.

I've been here at least 6 or 7 years and I've only blocked 3 people that entire time. I don't know that I've ever wanted to block more people than I have reading this thread. It is pathetic to watch all these keyboard warriors put down someone for retiring from football due to lingering injuries.

It's a brutal sport. I know a few people who have played at the college level (including my dad) who have dealt with pain for the rest of their lives as a result. Others get so many concussions that it shortens their lives.

Niehaus was a good player, but he wasn't going to be a 1st round draft pick. He wasn't going to make millions playing football. He's always wanted to go into law enforcement. He gave his all for Tennessee for 3 years, but decided he didn't want to deal with more injuries that could hamper the rest of his life. Frankly, it's probably a wise decision on his part.

Why people feel the need to put him down is beyond me. The people who feel the need to do that need to look in the mirror and maybe consider getting their own life in order before criticizing others.

Come on people, the kid was only a 3* recruit to begin with and THEN he went into what we have all discovered was a massively flawed S&C program under the devil Butch Jones. He basically didn't stand a chance just like countless players before him. Let the kid salvage the remaining part of his life that Butch didn't ruin.

I don’t find it odd at all. It’s not a specific injury but the kid is just worn out and in pain. He said that. Maybe he has spondylitis or maybe it’s just disc disease from the pounding his back has taken year after year but he feels he can’t go. Sure you can try and play through that with PT and such but maybe this kid wants to not have back surgery at age 25 and again and again and be a cripple by 35. It’s the attack on him after his statement that looks bad

There is a select few who made questionable comments but 99% of the posts are ok, the attacks you speak of are no where in the 6 pages of this thread. One guy said he quit on the team and a few guys said “who’s that”. That’s about the majority of it, and most of those posts were one and done posts so I don’t see how that equates to anyone attacking Nathan Niehaus.
