Since you know so much, who should UT hire? I will hang up and listen now.
The only person on the list I am strongly opposed to is Lawrence Frank.
I actually think Marshall would be really good.
I would be happy with Lon Kruger.
I really like Anthony Grant. I ripped him because I was so frustrated by his early season struggles. He straightened things out.
The hardest truth that I will readily admit is that people who know a lot more than I do can still get this wrong and it is not because they are an idiot.
I am concerned about Frank because he reminds me so much of O'Neill and I do not want guys who are angry and who when they go to the Big Orange Caravan look like they would lose a pickup game to your daughter.
If you look back at some of the people who Hat wanted when Pearl came, some of them now look great, and some of them flamed out completely.
I do not have personal relationships with top coaches in the way Hat does. I can tell you characteristics I want.
1. I would take a guy who is only here for 4 years if they recruit good and great players. If they leave a stacked roster 4 years from now and have continued to win, we will not be in NCAA trouble and the job will look even better.
2. It has to be a person who will avoid NCAA trouble. Jim Harrick, Jerry Tarkanian, Tim Floyd...all were actually pretty good coaches in different ways. Scott Drew is absolutely not an option for us, and we need to stay squeaky clean on this.
3. I want a person who has high integrity. I did not defend Pearl's personal life or say that it had nothing to do with his job as bball coach, because I do not agree with that. If you are willing to cheat on your wife, you are a person who does not mind lying about the most important things in life.
4. I want a guy who coaches a style of basketball that is fun to watch. If I have a choice between 20 wins with lots of dunks and steals and 3 pointers and 80 ppg or 20 wins with golf claps from the amateur coaches for the 5 second calls and great cuts at the end of the shot clock getting nice 10 foot js with games in the 50 ppg range, it is not a close call for me.
5. I want a proven recruiter. Bruce has the personality to be a great recruiter and he was just finally getting to the top here, but he took Ramar Smith because TONS of other guys told him no. Bruce had put zero guys high in the NBA draft, and Cal and others used that against him. I would love a guy who has brought in big talent and who has a rolodex that includes 1 guy who a recruit has heard of who is rich from the game of basketball.
I know you were being sarcastic, but that is my real answer.
I think we should be willing to pay more than we paid Dooley.
Lon Kruger might be my #1 choice.
