'19 NC QB Sam Howell

“I probably have it narrowed down in my head, so probably in the next month or two, I’ll try to narrow it down and make a decision,” Howell said after participating in Sunday’s Atlanta-area Nike The Opening Regional at Buford High School.

“I still talk to Coach Helton a lot,” said Howell, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the No. 88 overall prospect and No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the 2019 class. “I probably talk to him a few times a week over text, things like that. I have a pretty good relationship with them.”

Howell said he also has “talked on the phone” with new Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt, “but it’s mostly Coach Helton” that has stayed in contact with him. “They’re just saying they need a guy to come in and be the guy for that program,” Howell said. “I know Coach Helton wants me to be the guy in this class, so just things like that.”

“I just really like the campus, everything about Tennessee,” he said. “And I really liked what Coach Helton is going to do on offense. I really like what he was able to do at USC with Sam Darnold, so I think I’d fit in well there.”

While Howell admitted Tennessee has “a good situation” at quarterback — with redshirt sophomore Jarrett Guarantano, rising sophomore Will McBride and incoming signee JT Shrout in line to be the Vols’ only returning scholarship quarterbacks next year — he said “there’s more important things to look at, for sure,” in deciding on a school.

“It’s not going to be as big of a factor as people might think it’s going to be,” he said. “I mean, every school’s going to have quarterbacks, and you’re going to have to go and compete, so that’s not the only thing I’m going to look at when I make my decision.”

Says he might make it back for a practice or spring game to Knoxville. Also had nice things to say about Clemson. Tigers sound like a serious threat to UT.

We need this kid. He would have a starting job lined up in a couple of years. I think if its us and Clemson he sees he can come in and be a difference maker here.

My point is that qbs are more likely to stick. Agree or dont i really dont care.

They do stick with their initial commitment more times than not.

But amongst 4 & 5 Star QBs there is 50% transfer rate. (Not related to the discussion, just felt like throwing that out there...)
