I probably have it narrowed down in my head, so probably in the next month or two, Ill try to narrow it down and make a decision, Howell said after participating in Sundays Atlanta-area Nike The Opening Regional at Buford High School.
I still talk to Coach Helton a lot, said Howell, whos ranked by 247Sports as the No. 88 overall prospect and No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the 2019 class. I probably talk to him a few times a week over text, things like that. I have a pretty good relationship with them.
Howell said he also has talked on the phone with new Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt, but its mostly Coach Helton that has stayed in contact with him. Theyre just saying they need a guy to come in and be the guy for that program, Howell said. I know Coach Helton wants me to be the guy in this class, so just things like that.
I just really like the campus, everything about Tennessee, he said. And I really liked what Coach Helton is going to do on offense. I really like what he was able to do at USC with Sam Darnold, so I think Id fit in well there.
While Howell admitted Tennessee has a good situation at quarterback with redshirt sophomore Jarrett Guarantano, rising sophomore Will McBride and incoming signee JT Shrout in line to be the Vols only returning scholarship quarterbacks next year he said theres more important things to look at, for sure, in deciding on a school.
Its not going to be as big of a factor as people might think its going to be, he said. I mean, every schools going to have quarterbacks, and youre going to have to go and compete, so thats not the only thing Im going to look at when I make my decision.
