Barton Simmons talked about how he changed the recruiting philosophy while there. Build from the defensive line out. Steele adopted it and has done a great job since. One season waystation. Not much of a presence, scheme wise. He flipped a top recruit from Florida but Garner. What Steele has instituted is all his.
His first stint at Auburn was a promising two season run which landed him the Longhorn DC gig. That coach in waiting sham they used to keep him out of the running for HC openings like ours was borne out of a good first season...followed by two meh efforts. He was simply never as good as his predecessor, Gene Chizik and would’ve accepted almost any job when Florida’s magically appeared.Muschamp has to be one of the most overrated coaches in college football.
He did all that in less than a calendar year? I call bull. Barton Simmons is the Saudi Arabia of recruiting. Possesses 18% of the hot air reserves.Barton Simmons talked about how he changed the recruiting philosophy while there. Build from the defensive line out. The 2016 class that Muschamp helped build was elite on the dline with Brown, coe, and Davidson
It’s not like he built the Panama Canal. Just convinced Gus to put an emphasis on having an elite defensive line and building from there. He’s doing the same thing at SC but it’s taken forever since they don’t have the $$$ like AUHe did all that in less than a calendar year? I call bull. If he built the Panama Canal, we’d be talking about that expensive mudhole down in Central America that ships keep getting grounded in. He convinced Malzahn that Garner should recruit and sign beast DL like Brown and Davidson, huh? Sounds like he took credit for reinventing the wheel by making it rounder. He treaded water for a season waiting for his next HC gig...don’t over complicate reality. It’s not like he built the Panama Canal. Well this came from people in Auburn that Barton talked to. Auburn people are a real good source. They dogged Washington as one of our lower rated recruits and are now putting on the full court press. Barton’s a clown. I don’t buy anything he says. Look, YOUR “reality” is that Muskrat is a superstar...mine is he’s average and a beneficiary of advanced hype. We’ve had this conversation before and sides haven’t changed. Deny my reality and I’ll deny yours...deal?Well this came from people in Auburn that Barton talked to. Don’t deny reality

Any coach worth his salt knows how important winning the line of scrimmage is, so it's hard for me to believe it took Muschamp to teach them how important that is.Barton Simmons talked about how he changed the recruiting philosophy while there. They were serviceable but we don’t have anyone like what AU or even SC had this past year. Kinlaw was a top 15 pick. Who do we have on the defensive line that’ll be Picked in the first three rounds? Maybe gooden if he’s healthy or Middleton if he starts to give effort on a consistent basisBecause he didn’t want them, didn’t recruit them and didn’t know they were important...check. How’d that DL accomplish that 180 without a Muschamp type in our stable?

He has also brought in Emerson E. Simmons K Garland J Mincey and last years signees D Bailey R Perry and O Thomas. He has recruited the DL pretty good. I saw 1 publication say Vols DL might be the best in the country. He’s brought in three JUCO dline and none are draft picks at this point. Like Pruitt a lot but he’s not above criticism. His dline recruiting hasn’t been good enough so far. I think he knows that and that’s why rocker isn’t here anymore
I’m not sure that those guys becoming draft picks is necessarily his fault. Rocker was not only a lazy recruiter, his developmental coaching skills weren’t quite on par with the rest of the staff. That’s another reason they let him slip right on out. To the comment of his d line recruiting hasn’t been good enough, ask Bama Auburn & others about how badly they wanted Omari Thomas and there was no way he wasn’t gonna play for coach Pruitt. Pruitt knew Hardy was a head case so he wasn’t going to throw the entire toolbox at him but he also wasn’t gonna let totally off the gas. He knew something wasn’t right there. He also believed in who he already had on the d line so he knew he could afford to miss on some top flight d line prospects last class. That’s why you see him in the thick of it with so many in this class. He’s brought in three JUCO dline and none are draft picks at this point. Like Pruitt a lot but he’s not above criticism.
