how bout you finish reading. Then check back with me.

Let's follow the conversation:

I think a more accurate question would be would you rather UT make the NCAA and lose on the first weekend which is likely, or miss the Dance, get some home games in the NIT and make a run there?

Sounds pretty much like the same question....and the answer is still obvious.

Losing in the opening round and winning 2-3 games in the dance are completely different things.

Explain to me what I'm missing...you said losing in the first round of the NCAA or get some home games in the NIT, tennchammps responded and you changed the criteria to comparing losing in the first round of the NCAA against winning 2 or 3 games in the NCAA. Which wasn't your original point.

How is being upset in the first round the same as an unprecedented Elite 8 appearance?

While I obviously agree with the premise of your theory, a 10 seed beating a 7 seed isn't that much of an upset. A 9 over an 8 isn't an upset at all.

no biggie. But I would still like an answer. Is losing the opening game but still being there bigger than winning the NIT to you? I've always thought the whole NIT winner is only the 65th best team argument was lame.

Obviously, I'd rather my team be in the Big Dance, but if I knew ahead of time they would lose during the first weekend by getting in and win the NIT if they failed to get in, I might change my mind. A few more home games and the chance to come in with such good momentum would be huge for a program like Tennessee. I would think an opening round loss would just be the final straw in a lackluster season.

Getting beaten by seventy points in the first round of the NCAA Tournament is a thousand times better than winning the NIT.

NIT stands for "Not In Tournament"
The NIT was a great tournament back before electricity and the wheel, but now I would rather make the big dance and lose early.
Back when the size of the NCAA tournament was between 8-32 teams (pre-1979) the NIT made sense. Back then maybe only one team from a conference went to the NCAA. Now with 65 teams all the good ones make it. The leftovers are mediocre at best.

Pretty much what hat said.

I'm probably being a bit harsh in calling the NIT "worthless" but to me NIT represents the Wade/Kevin/Buzz years, where we were glad to get an NIT bid.

So yes, getting 1 game in the NCAA, even if we lose by 40+ > an NIT championship.

Lets do another comparison

Would you rather...........

Have your mother find out you masturbate several times daily?

or

Have your girlfriend find out you masturbate several times daily?

In that case I'd rather make the NIT.

Would you rather...........

Have your mother find out you masturbate several times daily?(NIT = Very uncomfortable)

or

Have your girlfriend find out you masturbate several times daily?(Getting killed in the NCAA's = Still not that good, but you can take your girl finding out better than you can your mother)

It's really more like the difference in a hummer from the two.

There's an argument that winning the NIT is better than going to the NCAA and losing in the first round.

But going to the NCAA and winning two or three games there, or winning the NIT? Are you nuts?
