NCAA Tournament Game Thread - (4) Ohio State vs (5) Lady Vols

One of my fave lil game moments when you knew our mental was 100% on point:. Got a crucial 5 sec call late in the game, Zee, who was guarding the inbound, stepped directly out of bounds, took the ball out of the hands of the inbounder and started looking for someone to throw it in too. No flexing, staring or yelling, no ref! Just gimme that sh$t and let’s move on. O SU player just stood there frozen beside her for a second, Priceless.
I too was impressed with this 5 second count. What impressed me most is we just did a 5 for 5 changes before the inbounds and the girls came in and locked in on their assignment from the getgo. That told me these girls are locked in mentally.

Here's the thing. When watching Ohio State players during their 16-0 run to go ahead, I thought last night, "Yep. They're used to teams crumbling under their pressure, and now that they've had this run, they actually think they're going win. BUT THEY DON'T KNOW TENNESSEE! The Lady Vols can take a punch, or two, or three and still get right back up. The Buckeyes are about to be stunned."

And that's exactly what happened. They blinked, and Tennessee didn't. And that's what Vic Schaeffer is going to be preaching to his players ... that they can't assume they've "got this" if they get a little lead on us. 'Cause the Lady Vols don't roll over. They may just kick some Texas azz instead. I would not be a bit surprised by that.

I knew a run was coming after Spencer hit that ridiculous 3 to put the LVs up 17. If that had been a home game for us, that might have been a dagger but on their home floor, you knew they would make a push just as the LVs probably relaxed a bit after making their push. And that got the Buckeye crowd back into the game but the thing is, they had a massive mountain to climb and the LVs sort of rope a doped em'. They ran out of gas and then realized they were toast as the LVs rebuilt the lead and weren't going to look back.

I rather enjoy her demeanor as it is. Calm, cool and knowing her team make your team get in a street fight. She doesn’t need a tech when the other team is fading away, she just has to weather the storm. And the more a poster demands it the more I’m encouraged she’s doing the right thing.
Pretty sure younger, more analytical coaches think ref theater and time outs are just not cool. Ill bet there's numbers out there that show them its also not effective

I thought the same thing!!! Zee was phenomenal last night. Her touch under the basket has improved so much she almost doesn't even seem like the same player that started the season. Add in her ability to knock down three pointers with confidence, and she's GOT to be getting some notice from pro scouts, even if just as an energy player to come in to spell the BIG bigs now and then.

And how great is it that Ruby found her mojo again? And I think her best game of the season was against Texas two months ago, so she will already have in the back of her mind that if she can score 21 on them once, she can score at least 15 on them in the Sweet 16.

Tess. Samara. Yes! Yes!

Tay Cooper. OMG. She was the Swiss Army knife of basketball last night, and I love her so much. I especially liked that she -- and all our players, actually -- kept their composure through quite a few phantom fouls being called on them. A mentally weak team would have folded, but our Lady Vols brought the focused confidence last night and handed a very good Ohio State team their only loss in Columbus this season. Seriously, that was a reaaalllly strong win. I'm over the moon today!

Absolutely. The Easter Egg last night was 5 threes on 5-9 shooting by Ruby and Tess. Rest of the team was 5-24. We've said many times, we have to find just enough 3 point shooting somewhere somehow to win bc theres no one we can count on consistently.

Our run will end when/if we have a game where our 3 pt unicorn can't be found.

That depends upon the makeup of the team. I realize that you're speaking to the effectiveness related to the referees' reactions and how the game gets called, but certain players may get fired up and respond positively.

Sideline antics haven't seemed to hurt the success of both men's and women's teams at Connecticut, although one could argue that with enough talent, either the calm or manic manner will work.

That was the most loquacious CKC has been all season! She even elaborated on non questions ask by reporters.
Let’s hope her statement about her teams typically figure it out in March means we’re on that trajectory, which by TN standards, we’re heading in the right direction!

He's calmed down alot in recent yrs, CD only has to hold him back 5 or 6 times a game. Like Dawn, he'll gesture and make faces and frown and beef some but nothing crazy. The last real ref baiting crazy is the ever cray Kim Mulkey

Did you see recently when the current Indiana coach sat in THE chair that BK slid across the floor for a game on the anniversary of the famous slide? An old equipment mgr had retrieved it and saved it all these yrs.
I read about it. Traditions are different everywhere.

Actually, the OSU coach was quite aggressive toward the refs and probably should have had a "T" on one outburst where he got way out of his coaching box and was yelling at the refs for a foul call.

Alas, I guess that is why OSU won the game because of their their alpha coach and all, checks notes, uh, never mind.....

He was right about that call as replay showed. I don't count spontaneous outbursts since thats human nature.

In the scope of where reffing is right now, I thought they were decent last night

Everything was positive last night. We win the rebounds, turnovers, and made 10 threes. When were put all three of those together in a game it doesn't matter who were playing were winning that game.
I was surprised that the LVs' 3 pt % was only 29%. It seemed like they where hitting at a better rate than that. But as you say, they dominated all the other key areas.

Also, the attendance was only 7, 089 in a venue that can hold over 18K. Terrible look for the OSU fan base.

I've disagreed with you on this before. Bruce Pearl stays hard on the refs and oftentimes it comes back to bite him. Kim is in constant conversation with the refs. She's building reputation with them without humiliating them. It may not pay off each game, but WILL pay off eventually and regularly.
This idea that you are not doing a good job of in-game coaching unless you constantly berate the refs (and call it "working the refs") is the most idiotic opinion.

I fully understand that sports is very much a what have you done for me lately endeavor and that "enduring impacts" are equivalent to sand castles on a beach but.....

Getting to the S16 by beating a very good OSU team on their home court is a massive narrative changer. If the LVs had lost, it would not have been the end of the world but excuses would have to be made for a disappointing end of the season and not really improving on last years NCAA tournament finish. And of course there would have all our "body language" experts discovering deep rifts in the team based on subtle gestures and ambiguous facial expressions.

That is all gone. Getting to the S16 is a tangible momentum builder that bodes well for key portal pickups. Any lingering ? around CKC are now answered.

Barring an Illinios upset tonight, TX should be worried.

Not that it matters at all, but did anyone hear why Edie was not dressed for the game last night? I know she would not have played anyway with the way the game was, but was surprised when I got to the game ad they came out that she was not in uniform. I did not hear anything about her being injured or anything. Not a big deal just wondering if I had missed something :)
It was a great game to be at. Had a great laugh at some OSU fans next to us complaining about the substitution pattern Tennessee had and then in the 4th quarter hearing them saying OSU players looked tired and I wanted to be like and now you see why they do that :)

I may have mentioned it in the game thread when the SheNutz were making their run.

Com. Po. Sure.

I am certainly grateful Coach Kim agreed and didn’t choose an Alpha Male approach with the officials.
Oh my God!!! SheNutz!!! Just Stupid. I horse laugh at a lot of your posts, but this one might be the best!!!
