NCAA Tourney vs NIT

For the life of me I can't understand why people keep asking this question.

Nobody cares about the winner of the NIT.

Pretty broad question... Putting academics aside, I'd like to use Alabama and Vanderbilt as examples. If you were a recruit, where would you rather go? A perennial one-and-done Vandy team under Stallings, or an Alabama team that is seemingly on the rise under Grant? Since the question doesn't specify a time period, I'd have to say that in a single season - I would rather win the NIT.

NCAA Tournament. I can't recall anyone outright declining their NCAAt bid, as several teams have done for the NIT.

NCAA for sure. Winning the NIT just makes people remember you were in the NIT.

Florida is still able to recruit despite playing in the 2008 and 2009 NIT. If you remember, they won the 2006 and 2007 NCAA tourneys before being relegated to the NIT. The Gators made the NIT Semifinals in 2008 and the quarterfinals in 2009. In 2010, they lost in the first round of the NCAAt... and of course this season they lost an overtime game in the region finals.

Recruits remember how a team finishes the season. If a team gets blown out in the first round of any tournament, it will have a negative impact. Winning the NIT championship would definitely have a more positive impact.

NCAA everytime. I want us to play to our full potential and not just lay down and be walked on though

Sure, the NIT sucks... But when a team wins the NIT, people say "Man, I wonder what they would have done in the NCAAT." When a team gets blown out in the first round of the NCAAT, people say "Wow, they shouldn't have been playing in a postseason game at all."

No comprende?

I want us to try against a team we are better than and not play to competition. Also I don't want to get beat by 30 because we lay down and let them walk on top of us. I hate losing as much as the next guy but if we do lose I want it to be while giving our best.

This is a true story, according to the way I remember it, anyways.

I was attending college in the state of KY back in the 70's. That year, UT went to the NCAA tournament and promptly lost and KY went to the NIT and won.

When the UK fans would come around bragging about their NIT win, some UT fan volunteered that it was better to go to the NCAA and lose than go to the NIT and win a LOSER'S tournament.

The look on the UK fans said it all. NCAA was what mattered then, and I don't see that changing much since.

NCAA...the NIT is a complete joke. I have a bunch of friends that are alabama fans and they keep saying how awesome they are cause they are playing in the championship game. Its sad

This a lame argument, NCAA all the way. Kids don't sign to hope to go to the NIT they dream of going to the NCAA. He'll they don't even hardly show much of the NIT on TV as it is. Whoohoo we are 69 best team in nation now. It's called march madness for a reason, not NIT madness.

From a fan's point of view NCAA everyday all day. From a coach's view winning 5 games, being on tv and the extra practice time is what you want. It helps lay a foundation for next year. Now if you are always in the NIT then you have bigger problems.

Depends on the situation on the program.

A bottom-feeder on their way up, sure, I'll agree.

A consistent NCAA tournament team? No way.

Is that the VA Tech exception to the rule you listed there? :)

You read my mind. Though I do think they have been shafted a couple of times. As much as like to see them fail, thought they shoulda got in this year.

I could see having a young team that struggled early in the season but came together late benefitting from playing through and winning the NIT as opposed to getting hammered in the first round of the NCAA - great learning/team building experience.

Otherwise, NCAA.

Guess they should have made the tournament then. They only had to be in the top 64 teams to make it. 68 now... If you can't get into that field, you don't deserve to be there. And yes, I know VCU has made a run to the final 4. If they had been left out though, they didn't deserve to be there. You have 30 games to prove yourself. They are just making the most of their opportunity. Besides, there are 20 teams with lower seeds than them. I say this in the nicest way possible, screw the NIT champions.

There was a time when the NIT was the preferred choice by many schools and was considered at least as prestigious in the college basketball world

fyp. There also was a time when Princeton was a football powerhouse.

I can't say I heard about any VT fans consoling themselves over their tournament snub by looking back and remembering the past status of the NIT.

That's because it's Florida... It's still the athletic program du jour.
