Nebraska hires Mike Riley

Like most of you, I was surprised that Nebraska hired someone so fast and that Riley was the guy they decided to hire, considering his record and age. I would assume that Riley was further down the list and the primary targets turned them down. Given his record, it's surprising that Pelini got canned. Obviously, he had a strained relationship with the fans and administration due to his personality. However, you have to be really careful when firing a successful coach. Hopefully Nebraska made a good hire, however, I feel like they will be repeating the process in a few years.

So you fire a 9-3 coach for a 5-7 coach?. You go from a coach with 67-27 overall record to a coach with a 93-79 overall record. One coach has NFL experience as an assistant, and one coach failed miserably as a pro head coach. Not an obvious or easily defendable upgrade. Have to see how all this works out. I'm thinking he will be on a short leash, not necessarily in defense of Pelini, but because a lateral move (at best) will not be considered worth-while to those who aren't satisfied with the hire. This is a downgrade in my eyes.

While I can claim no real knowledge of the motivation behind nebraska's hire, I tend to believe they wanted a personality opposite to that of Pelini. Much like UT's hiring of Derek Dooley, when much of the fan base was turned off by Lane's antics. Many of us wanted a coach to restore the class to our proud program. I suspect many in the Huskers' fan base wanted someone that would represent UN with class/composure with the press (Riley is def that guy).
Having said that, Riley has a lot to offer beyond media savvy. Just my take on it. Take it or leave it.

Great hire by Nebraska. Riley has done a very good job at OSU considering all the choice prospects go to Oregon. To take the Beavers to as many Bowl games that he has is a miracle.

Their reactions seem a lot like what we reacted like when we hired Butch. Turned out alright for us so far.

Not really. There was a huge outcry from the masses when we hired Butch. And there still is from some holdouts.

Most Husker fans are kind of puzzled about this hire. It's not that Riley is a bad coach by any means, just you would figure that Nebraska with it's rich heritage and tradition might look for someone with a bit more...panache I guess would be the best term.

It's kind of like Ohio State hiring Mark Stoops. He's a capable coach, just not at a school that's traditionally a powerhouse in football and plays in a tough conference.
