Nebraska @ Illinois. It's here!

It sucks to see a program like Nebraska fall to such a level. College football is better when the historical programs are all strong, or at least more than mediocre.
Until a program has been bad for a full generation, then nobody cares. We’re getting close

They may not have a choice, his buyout if they fire him this season is 20 million...They may choose to ride it out and hope for the best.

Wasn't there something recently about Frost and NCAA issues? If there is fire behind that smoke, could easily see Nebraska canning Frost for cause and avoiding the buyout.

Sad really. He was their golden boy. The one who was gonna lead them back. Just a big nothing burger in the end.

Bigger question is who in the world are they gonna get to replace him? Tradition and history mean a great deal in college football, but Nebraska is teetering on the edge of no return.

Craig Bohl should have been the choice before Frost but you know it's Nebraska.....Bohl is in his sixties now not sure he wants to rebuild the hometown team

You are kidding yourself if you think tradition and history matters. There is a reason they are dog **** and so are we. No recruit gives a shat about 1998

Bohl is awesome. I actually pull for Wyoming when I’m watching that late Mountain West action.

Nebraska does not have the natural resources to be a big time program anymore. The state doesn't produce enough talent and Lincoln is in the middle for freaking nowhere. The winters are bitter cold and there's nothing to do there. Their historic success is more of a testament to just how special of a coach Tom Osborne was. For 25 years, he coached Nebraska to a record of 255-49-3, a winning percentage of .836, 14 conference titles and 3 national championships. He also never had a losing season, with 9-3 being the worst they ever finished under Coach Osborne. Coaches like that just don't grow on trees and the ones that ARE that special now just aren't going to go to a place like that where it's not set up for success. And even rarer is to find one that will stay at a program for 25 years. I hate to say it but I think Nebraska is dying on the vine. It's a shame too because they're a lot like Tennessee in that they have a terrific and devoted fanbase who deserve better than what they've gotten over the last decade or so.

Perhaps I should have clarified that tradition and history matters to the fans.

I agree, history and tradition mean nothing to the players.

Not nearly as much and as many as you think. I would go so far so say that segment of the fans is probably a minority now. Most fans probably go back no further than 10-15 years and they sure don't care what happened 30 years ago.

It wasn't just Osborne though; they were a fantastic program under Bob Devaney before that. That is how good of a coach Osborne was; he was so good nobody (except Nebraska fans, maybe) even talks about Devaney. He went 101-20-2 with 2 national titles and 8 conference titles in 11 seasons.

Nebraska is a tough one to call because part of me says not to jump off the bridge and part of me says they'll never be back and are in a much worse position than Tennessee in terms of trying to get back. They were consistently winning 9-10 games as recently as 2014, and that was as a member of the Big Ten (which is not a good conference fit). The state produces no talent, Lincoln is in the middle of nowhere, the winters are cold, and there's nothing to do, but that's always been the case.

The only things that are different today than when Nebraska was good (besides conference membership) was their walk-on program and their "strength and conditioning" program. Nebraska had one when very few other schools did, but rumor has it they were also big on the roids. In order for them to compete again, it seems like they are going to have to do something really different, perhaps even really gimmicky, as a program. They ran the triple option during their heyday; perhaps they need to go out on a limb strategy-wise again?
