Nebraska Series Cancelled

Business decision as usual. I still remember us cancelling the Army game so we could replace them with Akron. Even though they were disappointed, I thought this quote from Army’s coach showed quite a bit of class at the time:

“Tennessee’s got to do whatever (they) think is best for their program,’’ Monken said at the Thursday press conference. “That’s just the way it is. … It’s just part of the business, it’s part of college football. I didn’t think twice about it.’’
Canceled because of ?? blocking by Army; Maybe? And Akron came in and deliberately tried to hurt our guys, actually did hurt someone.

@PeteThamel

Sources: Tennessee and Nebraska are canceling their upcoming football series, which was schedule for 2026 in Lincoln and 2027 in Knoxville.

Correction: Tennessee is not canceling this series. Nebraska did. We are very disappointed that they didn’t want to play these games, especially this close to 2026.

If they are going to do a home and home with another P4 school these are the only ones with openings

Boston College
Florida State (plays Bama in 26 and UGA in 27, very unlikely)
Pitt
Stanford
TCU
Notre Dame
USC (has 1 non conference game open in 27 but that probably will be Notre Dame)
Washington
We already have Washington due up after that I believe. I’d like to play ND home and away. Been some good matchups between us in the past, get a lot of eyeballs on the program too.

It all boils down to making the playoffs now. If we win 10 games in this league, then we are likely in most years. Expect more of this in the future from other ADs around the country.
You are correct. Expect more of it. Article I saw called it the “Indiana Method of Scheduling”. Don’t schedule anybody of consequence in the non-conference schedule that even has a chance of beating you and keeping you out of the playoff. It worked for Indiana.

Nebraska wanting an extra home game...so they cancel a home and home series? Lol. Their fans have to be livid. Get rid of an SEC series and replace it with a cupcake game. I guess they knew what was coming.

Disappointed this got cancelled, was really looking forward to seeing a game in Lincoln. Got to stop and see the stadium during the CWS at least.

Mr. White,
Thank you for holding the correct party accountable. Doesn't happen enough in this world. Looking brighter every day. Go VOLS!
No, he should have taken the same high road Army's coach did. If you really look at it Army was in a much worse situation by us canceling then we were by Nebraska canceling.

For Army that was a game a big-name school. I am not sure if it was a pay game but pretty sure it was. They had to scramble to get another opponent, Hint There are certain schools P4 teams do not like playing... the service academies and the giant killers like App State fall in this category. The service academies usually play some version of the triple option because of weight limitations on their rosters. This causes a lot of problems when defenses rarely ever see such offenses. It's kind of like on a pickup basketball court when the group of 40-year-old white guys that can't jump show up and school everyone running the Princeton offense.

For UT its an OOC game we can easily find a random team to give a paycheck to and rolfstomp those 2 years. And on short notice. Its not like it was Oregon or OSU or something like that. It's not like Nebraska is prime recruiting territory. Trust me Danny white could call up UTM, UTC or pretty much any FCS school and they'd jump at any or both of those 2 dates. Even getting a mid-term FBS school would be childs play. A home and Away vs UNC or Marshall would actually pay off more in recruiting than playing Nebraska.

It sucks but trust me Danny White is not gonna have issues filling those slots.

This is becoming the norm for UT. Schedule a big name and the series getting canceled a couple of years before it happens. Then play a OVC or Sunbelt team in its place. What are the odds the Washington series ever happens?

If Nebraska is needing to cancel games because of money, makes me think their not having a spring game may be financial also and Rhule's just blowing smoke to cover that.

Another series with Pitt would be good.

2026 and 2027 series verse Nebraska has been cancelled due to Nebraska. This sucks, I was really looking forward to those games.

Hmm. One has to reason that decision - in part or in whole - came from the BIG. Stadium reduction? Really? It's gonna sell out.
Thamel sorta seems to be twisting this - not a first by him.

Well, since they are blaming stadium renovations they could just man up like Penn State in 1971-1972 and play both games of the home and home, in Neyland.
It's the loss of revenue from the stadium renovations that is driving it. They are doing major renovation work that has been planned for at least half a decade and will take out a bunch of seats for a while. The new AD had to revise the plan after Trev Alberts bolted for TAM. By canceling the Tenn series, they can get another home game and most of the revenue from it because the replacement team won't require the same $$$ that Tenn does.

It's all economics as everyone is scrambling to gain/protect all sources of revenue since players will likely have to be paid starting next season. I expect that we will see more and more of this going forward. Schools will be trying to schedule teams that bring in the most net revenue, while not playing teams that are so bad that they hurt playoff chances.
