Need SMU to win out for HOST I think.

The possibility of this crappy Clemson team getting a bye possibly shows they already need to tweak some stuff in this format.
They are not guaranteed a bye, even if they win the ACC. Rules state it’s top 4 highest ranked conference champions get the bye Boise State is currently #11 and Clemson is #18 in the AP and will most likely be around the same spot or with in 1 or 2 either way. So Clemson could win the ACC and not be ranked in the top 12 at all. Then if that’s the case The fifth-highest-ranked conference champion is seeded where they were ranked in the CFP top 25, or at No. 12 if they are outside the top 12.

SMU winning we prolly see Bama or South Carolina sneak into the CFP. But if Clemson wins, this could potentially get 2 ACC teams into the field and keep Bama out. Committee may not penalized SMU to the point of knocking them out of the CFP if they are competive with Clemson. So it may not be a bad idea after all for Clemson to be in if it means we get to see Bama/Miami/USCjr get left out because of it. The melt down would be epic with those fan bases.

Some of you guys need to take a breath. The top five for tomorrow is pretty much set in stone. The sixth spot will be either TN or OSU. If it’s UT then they’re a lock to host. If it’s OSU, then Tennessee’s only chance of hosting is if UGA loses on Saturday and the committee drops them from the five spot. No other games have any impact on Tennessee’s chances of hosting a first round game. I know some will say that if Oregon beats Penn State bad enough PSU may fall below TN, but I doubt that happens.

I just honestly dont care too much who hosts and where. I say show up and beat the brakes off whoever we play.

You really think Indiana is a “True top 10” team? They have played 7 of the 8 weakest teams in the Big10 and one of the softest schedules in the county. I think Florida would be Indiana right now if they played.

Also Arkansas is a “better loss” than Michigan. Tennessee lost to Arkansas on the road and a night game. Ohio State was at home and lost to UM in a day game. That is far worse to me than losing a night game in Fayetteville with a freshman QB that was starting his 5th game of his career

I could be missing something but if we use the AP and Coaches Poll as a baseline for the CFP rankings, Bama will be #11 when the new rankings come out with only one automatic qualifier (Big 12 champ) behind them. That would make Alabama the 12 seed if SMU wins the ACC.

It seems to me like they are in unless Clemson wins the ACC.
If SMU and Boise win they will be the 3 and 4 seeds. The Big 12 champ might have a case to be the 4 over Boise but Boise is still ranked ahead of Alabama so that pushes Alabama to the 12 seed. The only scenario that puts Alabama as the 11 seed is if UNLV beats Boise. UNLV would be the 12 and Alabama would be the 11. The scenario that pushes Alabama out is Clemson winning against SMU in a close game. Highly unlikely, but if Clemson blows SMU out then all bets are off and wouldn’t be shocked to see Alabama stay in.

Not enough being said about the coaches poll and ap poll ranking Vols above OSU. Why would the committee abandon the major polls now? Is it politics? It’s disgusting to see ESPN and others think the SEC gets one hosting game! EFFEM!!!

I really think it will only depend on whether they think OSU deserves to drop below Tenn. One of them is 8 the other is 9. The only way I see Tenn even sniffing a 6 or 7 is if Texas or Penn St get blown out, like bad.

Yes, the only thing that matters is UT and tOSU seedings. Does the committee mirror the AP and coaches poll, or go their own way. The only other possibility is a blow out in either Big10 or SEC games and a loser drops below UT. Best hope might be an Oregon blowout of PSU but PSU has been over ranked all year. Don't see committee dropping them that far, but UT would have a better SOS and a better win with win over Bama. PSU's best win is over Illinois, UF and OU are better teams than Illinois.

I wonder if Kent State would decline the invite.. 😆

Unless Oregon is way better than Georgia or Alabama, I feel like we are well prepared to compete against anyone.
I agree. Nico has consistently improved the last few games and the pass protection was stellar in the Vandy game. The running game and defense speaks for itself…my biggest worry is all the stupid penalties, especially false starts on the OL.

I don’t understand the false starts at all. Vandy blared music while we were getting the play in, but it happens at home too.

The other thing that doesn’t make any sense illegal man downfield. It seems like those two penalties happen every game.

SMU winning does nothing for us. The ACC champions are getting an automatic bid. The only thing we would want from that game is for Clemson to win so that keeps Alabama out. SMU is ranked behind us so they are either dropping to 11 with a loss or getting the 3 seed with a win.
No conference champ gets an automatic bid

It's the Top 5. It's possible that those teams would be from the SEC, BIG, Big 12, Conf USA, and the MW. If Clemson beats SMU, they might be an at large bid or even get left out.

Remember what the committee did to FSU last year?

All we have to do to host is be in front of OSU tomorrow. That's all.

They lost at home to 20 point underdog and looked bad. It SHOULD be a lock.
The committee is gonna look at their big wins more than the bad loss to UM imo. Hope for the best but prepare for the letdown.

Hell we all know they didn’t beat anyone of real merit. Committee will say Indiana and psu are good wins tho

I’ll be shocked if they drop that far. Their loss to Michigan is very similar to our loss to Arkansas, only it was a home game for OSU and an away game for TN.

Georgia could claim the #2 seed and then our other loss would be to #2 away and OSU’s would be to #1 away.

Indiana/ PSU rankings will hurt us, even though Bama is probably better than either of them.
It should matter that Michigan beat them using the 2011 Kentucky-Tennessee method of not playing a QB. It won’t, aside from making Ohio State fans more resolute that Day has to go, but it should. Problem is Ohio State has two top 10 wins over playoff teams. I don’t necessarily think Indiana is that good, but if they are going to be ranked that high by the committee, the committee has to give Ohio State a lot of credit for that win.
