I think that far north might be a different whiting (might be in the hake family).The last time that I was on the shores of Lake Michigan, whiting was in season, and whole dressed fish could be bought for 63 cents per pound.
What I meant by "whiting" was what folks north of about Carolina Beach, NC call "sea mullet" (same family as specks, drums, and spots--all types of "croaker").
