New Coaching Search???

Its a misreading, at least in my case, to think a return to PS level is what we're asking. Seven seasons in, only a crazed optimist would hope for that. Eventually of course, I would love some championships but at this point all I want is some sharpness, some improvement over time, some player development, most of all just to make games fun and not excruciating any more.

We knew this season was going to be tough, they are young (though I'm sick of that as an excuse) and they do lack a top notch post (though I love C Green but she should be a role player at best). But to see them so very lost, listless and scattered is inexcusable.

I never again want see a Lady Vol as dis-spirited, discouraged and undercoached as Rennia Davis currently seems to be.

Rennia looked downright miserable during the press conference after yesterday's loss. Or it could be her default body language, but she doesn't seem to be a happy camper, and it's showing in her play on the court.

This Holly/PAT mirrors HOF coach Dean Smith insisting hiring longtime assistant Bill Guthridge. The difference is after 3 years Guthridge seen the program regressing and retired at 60 years old. His love for UNC led him to retire to restore the program. UNC's first hire was a bad one Matt Doherty but they finally got it right plus the cheating helped. Guthridge never coached again great Assistant of the years, his ying to Dean Smiths yang worked well but not HC material some people are just not.

Broke this ol coach's heart to see the whole thing,
E could hardly keep her head up.
The look of ferocity on Ren, , gone.
The right words, a defined focus, a plan, an answer...A reason!

They need inspiration more than they need perspiration right now.
I can be there tomorrow

In order to hire a proven coach the ad must be prepared to spend close to 3X what Holly makes at $650Kish. All the top 10 coaches make well over a $1mil and it will take well over $1.5 To lure them away. I don't have the confidence they'll spend $1.5-$2.0 mil on women's basketball coach.

If anyone paid attention to my post as soon as season started when some fans were laughing at south carolina, I said that the worst of Holly is this year & is coming. This is the year she will break the worst record ever and draws attention.. So, everyone should put on yo sit belt and watch how lady vols for the first time in history will not qualify for NCAA tournament.

Being the only program to be able to say that they’ve played in every NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament is one of the last major points of pride they have left to brag about. Nearly every other positive bragging right has been lost — and there used to be dozens!

Seriously, if they don’t receive a tournament invitation it’ll be a devastating blow, and I’d never be able to forgive Tennessee for allowing the program to dip that far before hiring a more capable coach. To wait until AFTER that last point of pride has fallen away would be totally, completely unforgivable to more people than just fans like me — it’ll be unforgivable to all the ones whose feelings count the most: the former players who built that amazing legacy.

I have a Split Personality

when I watch Lady Vols Basketball. One side of me hopes the players will play great and the other side of me wants this Staff gone as soon as possible.

I don't think the staff necessarily needs to go. I just think Holly needs to be part of the staff, like she was before, and let them hire someone else to come in and coach. The staff is made up of some of the same names that assisted or played under Pat Summit. They just need a leader.

I am just throwing out names, desparate for something new and because she is female and former player a certain part of the fanbase wouldnt get their panties in a wad. And personally think she excels at whatever she does, so would take a chance. If this doesnt quote correctly, I am talking about Lawson.

I understand losing to Stanford. Losing to Georgia is like a kick in the nuts. It shouldn't happen. Holly has had plenty of time to prove that she knows the game, can adapt, and win. It's sad to say, but anytime we play a game and it's close to start the 4Q, we lose.
Really a triple nut kick because Missouri and Kentucky at home were miserable defeats.

Long time reader and thought the three game losing streak was enough to finally register and comment. Here are my points on this.

1. You never fire a coach mid season unless there are safety/abuse issues by the coach. It can hurt you way more than it can help you. Let her finish the season. Maybe, just maybe there can be a spark of light remaining.

2. Hire a proven coach. Do not hire someone who has never tasted victory at a high level. I dont mean you have to have won a national championship, but you must be proven. A new coach with no experience here would be a disaster. Fans would not have any time for the coach to learn. Some on here have called for a couple of coaches ( no doubt good people that know the game) to be hired, but the pressure of winning would eat them alive. And so would the fan base. Not fair to either.

3. Do not limit the hires( if Holly were to be let go) to any particular race or gender. Hire proven leadership. This is just common sense and anyone touting never hire a male has never been faced with tough hires anywhere. Always hire the best person for the job regardless.

Excellent post all around!

1) The time to change a coach is after the season. UT missed the last reasonable window for change and it shouldn't do that again. Holly is, in my opinion, a wonderful person who has had more than her chance to fly. When this season ends, it will be time to move on---actually, past time, but do it after the season.

2) Absolutely, hire a proven coach. The experiment with a "likely can't miss, up and comer" (i.e. Holly) simply didn't work for whatever reasons and her record has eliminated (spent?) UT's margin for error going forward. Find a current or former head coach who has been a winner. It doesn't have to be an SEC coach. It has to be someone with a proven record of past success. No more experiments. No more Pat-related sentiment. Identify and hire a proven winner with or without ties to the Lady Vols.

3) Nearly the same point as #2. It doesn't have to be a female. It doesn't have to be a male. Race simply does not matter. Hire a proven leader and the rest will take care of itself.

The only proven coach we have ever hired that I can remember is Rick Barnes. Everybody else has been an up and comer. I don't worry that Holly is gone a lot more has to happen to get any concern out of the AD or the boosters. If it did happen then were not paying more than 1 million for a coach. I don't know what Wes Moore makes but I don't think it is a million and he would be the guy that has taken a program not that great to hefty status this season and they have gotten better every season he has been there. Our up and comer would be Kara Lawson or Michael Schwartz if we could steal him away from Rick Barnes. People talking about Tennessee paying 1.5 million for a women's basketball coach don't know much about out hiring history. We are cheap and when it comes to women's sports even cheaper. The thing they like about Holly is she is willing to coach for 650 thousand which is probably at the bottom of the SEC pay category. Dawn makes way more and most of the other coaches do as well.

I could support a hire like Wes Moore. He's not alone.

Has Schwartz ever coached females? IMO, it takes a very different approach to successfully coach females as opposed to males.

I don't really understand Kara Lawson's coaching support. Yes, she's one of my all-time favorite Lady Vols and, yes, she was/is a great player and a far above-average announcer. She seems to know the game, but she has absolutely no record of coaching success. For that matter, has she ever indicated she even wants to coach?

It makes no sense to hire another unproven head coach at UT. Been there, done that.

I do not think that an established div I basketball coach could be induced to come to Tenn, because of the money, and; why take the risk of leaving a successful program where there is job security to a school where there would be none?

But, there are many young, excellent coaches (as shown by their team's play), even in Div 2 and 3, who would jump at the chance to coach at Tenn- and for the same pay that Holly is getting now, for the opportunity to coach at a school with the tradition, fan base and top level players.

Everyone is thinking, "So what, I know that. The question no one has an answer to is how to convince the AD and Univ of Tenn governance to replace Holly.

The answer is- it has to come from above- the new governor. He is still in the after-glow of gaining office.

What do you think his reaction would be if he was deluged with emails. letters, phone calls, and petitions, from thousands of voters, demanding that Holly be replaced.

There are myriad reasons, but, I would highlight discrimination against women, specifically that the University of Tennessee AD and administration are violating Title IX, by subjecting the Univ. of Tennessee women's basketball players to substandard coaching, to the detriment of their future professional careers as players and coaches.

This would not be tolerated in a top men's program.

Are there any lawyers out there who would file a lawsuit? Whether it would win is immaterial. It would generate a lot of publicity. The Governor would want explanations. How would the AD and Tenn administrators like to be called before the legislature and explain their actions in a televised hearing?

For the governor, what are the political calculations. One the one side- every women and girl in Tennessee, and even some men, including his own family members. (And his own party whispering in his ear,)

And on the other side- anybody?

Lady Vol fans have been treated with contempt by the AD and UTenn administration- it is time they were put in the hot seat. and felt some public humiliation.

Who knows if this will work. But, when I see something I don't like, I use every arrow in my quiver to fight it and am satisfied with that.

LAWSON IS WHAT THE PROGRAMS NEEDS AND NEEDS DESPERATELY. STRUCTURE AND DISCIPLINE. SOMETHING that Holly can NOT and will not ever bring to the program I have NO idea if Kara can Coach. But, the product on the court is gonna play you to the bitter end every nite!!

There would no shortage of coaches wanting to coach at Tennessee if a change happens. Tennessee on name alone still gets 5 star recruits. The facilities are top notch, the fan support, any coach would have everything thing they'd need already in place. But, like some posters said, you're not getting a proven big name coach for 650 going to have to raise that price. Florida could've had Becky Hammon, but those dummies low balled the heck out of her. They went the cheap route.

I want something better than a low-tier program that is based on more than words. What do YOU want?
Then you have to prepare for in season transfers.
THEN TRANSFER!!
If a player wants to transfer because they are not being coached and held to a standard...……...then leave!!
Blue Chippers are over rated anywho!!

Has that ever occurred? The head coach gets demoted but stays on as an assistant while someone new comes in? I can’t speak for anyone else but if I were that new head coach, I would be uncomfortable with that situation. As a coach, I would want to bring in my own staff....people I know and are comfortable with. All this fire Holly stuff will, if it occurs, affect a lot of people....not just Holly, her significant other and her pet.

I don't like how women's sports is being treated period! if it was mens team see how quickly they get rid of that coach and hire another. Men's basketball within the last 7yrs of dumb Holly had hired about 2 to 3 coaches.

What record will it take to fire Holly, that is x the unknown factor. As stated before, if this was a storied men's program her butt would be on fire. The way some universities treat their women's major athletic programs, as opposed to their men's major athletic programs, should be a Title IX violation. Somehow, if Holly fails to get an NCAA invite, that might be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Sadly, if she keeps the program slightly above water, based upon the history of the program, the Lady Vols will receive an NCAA invite. So if that happens Holly is back to set more negative records and misuse more 5 star talent. It is a sad situation which continues to get worse.
