This always bothered me. It was clearly stated in the movie that there is no contact to the face.

Yeah but Steve McQueen's son kicked Daniel in the face with a pretty nifty move (more impressive than the crane technique). Maybe it was just a loosely enforced rule... like carrying in the NBA?

I hadn't thought anything about watching this but you guys have me interested now. Do they talk about Miyagi at all?

I thought it was going to be garbage from the previews. It’s very well written. It has an entirely different vibe from the movies. There’s lots of humor, but they also give the characters serious depth. It kind of flows like Freaks and Geeks.

He's always been the bad guy.

He started the whole fight with Johnny. He tried to steal his girlfriend. He put the hose into his bathroom stall at the dance. And he cheated to win the tournament.

Daniel-son = bad guy.

It sounds like you saw that episode of "How I Met Your Mother" with Zabka. LOL.

How did he cheat to win? Kicks to the head are legal.
I grew up competing in karate tournaments and earned a black belt in 1989. I assure I was kicked in the face quite often! My parents still have the VHS tapes to prove it, though they're hard to watch with my mom screaming like a soccer-mom during all of them.
Just give the guy credit for an amazing kick that when done right, no can defend!

Two questions for you:

1) The crane technique is just something made up for the movie right? That's not actually taught is it?

2) Miyagi's instruction of Daniel is based almost exclusively on muscle memory - at least in how to fend off an attack. Can you really teach someone karate skills that way? That's Hollywood fiction too, right?

The crane kick is basically a jump front kick, which I loved as a kid. It can certainly be effective.
I don't really know how to answer your second question. It's clearly exaggerated for the story, but kind of like with any sport training drill, I'm sure all karate students practice blocking quite a bit. I can remember spending entire training sessions on nothing but blocking.
I should also make it clear that I haven't stepped foot in a karate dojo since 1990.

You question waxa on, waxa off? How dare you!

That 3rd movie was laughably horrible. That's better left forgotten.

I think it would be interesting to see the Mike Barnes character now and how he would interact with Johnny. They’re supposedly in talks with the actor.

Some pretty cool videos on YouTube of rehearsals for the original movie. Search "Karate Kid Rehearsal Video".

The Karate Kid really takes you back to the 80's. You don't see musical montages in movies anymore but they were a staple in 80's movies. The Karate Kid had two of them. Daniel and Ali's date at Golf 'n Stuff and the All Valley Tournament to 'The Best'. The clothes, the hair, the dialogue (cheesy) and the ending (extra cheese) were vintage 80's. Hopefully, they can get Elisabeth Shue to come back. I liked how the female lead wasn't a skin and bones fashion model. She actually looked like the average attractive girl did at the time.. remember how her butt looked in the beach scene near the beginning of the movie?

It's so bad it's good. Not only is it blantanly just trying to repeat the first movie because they were out of ideas, there is so much wrong with the casting.

Kreese' fellow Vietnam Vet Silver is played by Thomas Ian Griffith...who was 27 during filming and is actually a few months younger than Ralph Macchio. Then they had to pretty much dance aroung Daniel having a romance with Jessica because Robin Lively was only 16 during filming.

And on top of all that, they made the tournament be that Daniel is automatically in the championship because he's the defending champion.

Yep and in the championship match against Barnes, Daniel only wins one point. Basically, one point won the whole tournament. How is that fair? LOL!

If they do bring back Barnes, I hope the first interaction he says "Come on LaRusso, you know that tournament was some straight up bull****! ONE FREAKIN POINT! That's all you had to get!"

It will be an interesting dynamic. With Johnny, he was a punk but we saw at the end of the first film he had a shimmer of decency. He was a conflicted character. With Mike, he was just a total villain with no redeeming qualities.
