Oh yeah, the first thing I thought when standing atop Neyland looking out over the Tennessee River was "they should add some buildings to block some of this gorgeous view."

I'll give them this. This whole "entertainment complex around sports venue" thing is a shining example of the modern college sports ethos.

But...you GOTTA admit...Neyland Drive along the River has been a DUMP of a thoroughfare going back BEFORE the '82 World's Fair...and I know 'cause I WORKED the "Family Fun Fair" during the Fair located along this SAME area...

Oh I won't argue about it needing improving, I'm just ... well, let's call it "amused" ... by how it's all being replaced with expensive shops and point-of-sale opportunities. Squeeze that money out of people. All very inorganic. But that's a lot of the modern sport now.

The building blocking the river part though, that's heinous - albeit unsurprising. I'll never question the human ability to slap price tags on things that are priceless.

Couldn’t put that commercial mall out near Cumberland.. Oh, no! We need it next to the scenic river, between the iconic Vol Navy and the football stadium of big traditions!

That reminds me of the view from the pyramids of Giza that no one wants to photograph in front of.

Its genius if you ask me. More tax revenue for Knoxville and more money for UT. You don't have to go down there if you don't want to. But if you weren't part of the Vol Navy or the few with parking passes, you really had no need to go down there because it was just a highway and a parking garage. Now there's gonna be several food options. Atlanta will tell you how much more money they have brought to Truist park with the Battery. It's awesome to be able to hang out outside the stadium and eat and drink before or after a Braves game.

Doesn't look like it blocks the view of the river from the stadium if the renderings are correct as all those shops are built ground level. The hotel is tucked behind the stadium pressbox, so maybe a smidgeon of that blocks a view.

Overall I like it for the most part. or at least the idea of it.

if you are in Neyland, you are not there for the view OUT to the river, so one section, or even if its two, view being blocked isn't a big loss. willing to bet the final design when built won't seem as large or obtrusive as it appears in the renderings. the renderings are there to sell this new area to investors, not to be an actual reflection of what it is going to be.

my big issue is I don't like that it is a continuous strip mall in front of neyland. they need to break it into pieces, and provide some common/green space, that lets you be up at the shop level and look back towards the stadium without your view being blocked.

some covered areas or trees out towards the river side would also help from the user experience and help break up the continuity issue I personally have with it.

The proposed development include three major components:

  • Entertainment District: Nearly 175K Square Feet. Managed by Brick + Bev, who has experience with a multitude of entertainment districts across the country. (Xfinity Live, KC Live, Ballpark Village Live, Live by Loews, Texas Live, and Live at The Battery, among others.)
  • Parking: Full replacement of G10; additional parking will be added to support the entertainment district and condotel needs (specifically not reducing student parking stalls). The university would identify alternative parking solutions for use if G10 is temporarily offline.
  • Condotel: Full-service Hotel, Rooftop Restaurant & Bar, Pool & Terrace, Conference Center, Lounges, Fitness Center, Hotel Spa—Hartland Hotel Group will develop this aspect of the project. The group developed the Hotel Figueroa, located next to LA Live. It would feature 240 rooms and 60 luxury condos.

Breaking it up sounds good.

I wouldn’t care if it weren’t going to be so permanent. It’s going to be awesome new. I hope it doesn’t remind me of the SPAM building in 20 years.

Hilarious, there are already less spots available this year than any other. Where in the heck will you find enough parking spots to replace G10, even temporarily?

I like that they are adding food options near the stadium. Back in the late 80s and early 90s when I was able to go to more games, I’d find a place on the strip to grab a bite. Seems like a lot of those places are disappearing now. Don’t want us to get like the lamecocks in Columbia, where there is almost NO option for food if you’re not tailgating.

One thing is for sure, everything changes. You may not like it, but it will change one way or another.

🤷🏻‍♂️

And it looks like the Parking Garage will STAY...and everything is built On-Top...which is GREAT news...and LOOK at ALL the NEW area for The Vol Navy to Dock and walk over!!!!

Looks like G10 will have a smaller capacity if they make the top of the deck a concourse as shown in the picture. Parking has always been a challenge on game day and this will add to the congestion. Not saying it's a bad thing. People need exercise.

That would require not playing at Neyland. Williams Brice is out by nothing

Build whatever they want. . . as long as it doesn't block that view. That's one of the best views in college football and you're gonna throw a hotel up in front of it?

Hope they get terrible feedback on it and decide to alter it's location.

I bet they won't involve any of UT's colleges (architecture/interior design/landscaping/engineering) in the brainstorming/idea phase.

when they were working on the campus master plan with all the new sidewalks and plantings, they completely ignored the students and faculty and brought in a bunch of outsiders who never stepped foot on campus. that lead to a lot of issues when it came time to actually do the work/design.
