Newt Gingrich: Sweet and sour - CBS News

Newt Facts:

1) Newt Gingrich has campaigned on a pledge to repeal ObamaCare, but he also has a long history of supporting the same government healthcare mandates in RomneyCare and ObamaCare.

2) Newt Gingrich campaigned on behalf of NAFTA, the same policy and exported our jobs. Mexican Bailout

3) Gingrich Supported for Bank Bailouts: TARP, Wall Street bailouts

4) Gingrich doesn't believe in the free markets. The Wall Street Journal even dubbed Gingrich "Professor Cornpone" in a January 30, 2011 unsigned op-ed that noted Gingrich has been the champion of government ethanol subsidies for at least two decades. The cozy relationship Gingrich has with the ethanol industry led to his consulting business winning more than $300,000 in fees from the ethanol lobby after he left Congress.

5) Gingrich's "Green Conservatism": Bigger Government. President Obama prates constantly to the American people about the need for more federal spending for "green jobs," and this is only slightly different from Newt Gingrich's approach, which he calls "green conservatism." On his campaign website, Gingrich says the federal government should "finance cleaner energy research and projects with new oil and gas royalties."

6) Let's not overall the following please: The Constitution provides that the federal government may not spend a dime unless the House of Representatives approves it in an appropriation bill. The "conservative" Gingrich failed to cut spending at all, but did manage to increase tax collection from the citizenry by more than 50 percent. Total federal spending during Gingrich's speakership increased from $1.227 trillion fiscal 1995 to $1.383 trillion in fiscal 1999, the last fiscal year of his speakership, a 12.7 percent increase (3.2 percent per year). The U.S. budget did move from a $226 billion deficit to an $86 billion surplus during that period. But it had nothing to do with spending cuts; the deficit was erased because of increased extraction of tax dollars from taxpayers. During Gingrich's tenure as speaker, federal tax receipts increased by more than 50 percent, from $1.001 trillion to $1.545 trillion.

7) Gingrich backed federal education funding from his earliest days in office, though the Constitution gives absolutely no authority over education to any branch of the federal government. He helped garner support to create President Jimmy Carter's Department of Education in 1979. Since then educational spending has soared while educational standards have plummeted. Things got worse when he was Speaker. In 1996, then-Republican Party Chairman Haley Barbour bragged that "education spending went up under the Republican Congress as much as it went up under the Democratic Congress." That is a bit of an understatement since Gingrich's Republican Congress increased education funding by $3.5 billion in 1996, the largest single increase in history.

8) Gingrich voted numerous times throughout his 20 years in Congress to increase and expand unconstitutional foreign aid and trade. He supported both subsidized trade with the Soviets and federally funded loans to foreign governments through the Export-Import Bank. Between 1994 and 1995, Gingrich voted for $44.8 billion in foreign aid. He also helped push through federally funded loan guarantees to China. Today, that murderous communist regime is the largest holder of U.S. debt in the world.

9) Gingrich is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR) since 1990. He has said that"I am for the United Nations."

Not the same? He supported giving Freddie and Fannie bailout money. You think because he didn't voice public support for their lending practices that he's not a friend? I'm pretty sure they like the money they got.

I see your point and agree with you. The initial bailout was a whole list of entities though and there is a difference.

I specifically want to know if he lobbied for Fannie and Freddie when Bush and republicans were pushing for more regulation of Fannie and Freddie in about 2006. If he did, that would be the end of him for me.

I agree this appears bad and needs to be dug into. However, I am not just going to throw him out yet as my choice. It is not like I have a ton of options.

Your a Dem right? So why do you care if you believe Newt is incorrectly labeled a staunch conservative.

Anyone find it funny that the criticism of Newt is just now starting because he is rising in the polls. No candidate is perfect. No candidate ever will be. Some people will always have different stances at different times due to knowledge learned from past mistakes.

IMO, he is saying all the right things right now that I want to hear. He is giving specifics and not just some "hope and change" crap.

I think every Dem and GOP in Washington needs to be voted out of office and have made that statement more than once on Volnation.

The mess the USA is in now is due to spending by both parties.

I do not like Newt, he has way too much baggage.

Yep. The increased attacks are directly correlated to Newt's rise in the polls. It's his turn. Bachmann then Perry then Cain and now Gingrich.

Fortunately for the critics, they all suck pretty badly. Romney is actually a good candidate in the traditional sense (charisma, likability), but he's got the Mormon glass ceiling.

I find the lack of Romney hit pieces suspicious. I think the media is hoping that he wins the GOP nomination (all the while claiming he's the most electable / presidential / moderate-in-a-field-of-kooks etc.) only to destroy him with crap they've been saving up.

Check his voting record.

sure, he throws in earmarks totaling 400 million then votes against the spending bill because he thinks everything should be earmarked.

I guess in a literal sense it makes sense. But like Newt's decision to support TARP, it can be spun into a negative.

He will get hit hard starting in Jan 2012. Perry has $15 million, Cain has raised $9 million recently. Newt will now see donations rising. They all will go after Romney with negative advertising.

It's easily justifiable in my mind. Looking at it from Paul's perspective....

He prides himself on voting consistent with the constitution and liberty. As he sees it, if everyone followed his exact lead, we'd be headed towards Utopia.

If he doesn't throw in ear-marks the result is that every other congressional district gets earmarks which are partly funded by his home district. They shouldn't suffer for electing the one truly fiscally responsible guy to congress. So including earmarks allows his constituents to keep some of their money in their district, while he can continue to vote consistent with the constitution and liberty.

As I see it, if any inconsistency by a politician is justifiable, it's this.

Newt has more skeletons than anybody up there, precisely because he has been part of the system for so long. If he emerges as a real threat to Romney, they are going to absolutely tee off on him.

ZERO. Zero of his skeletons are worse than Jeremiah Wright in your background for 20+ years but you choose to ignore that along with all liberals because it doesn't fit your agenda. Shocking and pathetic.

All spending should be 'earmarked'. Congress is not supposed to just right a check labeled 'roads' and give it to the president and allow the administration to decide how it is spent. Congress needs to stop delegating its responsibilities and make the hard calls.

He's been running for President for basically 5 years now. There's not much new to hit him with at this point.

The hit pieces don't need to be skeletons in the closet (although there may be some), they'll likely be along the lines of this one:

How Romney grew rich by plundering companies - Chicago Sun-Times

McCain was treated with kid gloves until the general election. Then it was "wow, he's so damn old." And "he has no personality, he's so boring." And "hm... his demeanor might suggest racism." These memes aren't destructive in and of themselves but when they're repeated over and over they become nearly impossible to deflect or diffuse.

Are you trying to insinuate some form of left-wing media bias?

They can hit him all they want. Newt makes it to a one on one debate with Obama and Obama is toast.

The whole world will see what an actual leader looks like and it will be over.
