From The Chattanoogan's StanCrawley...

McCallie quarterback B.J. Coleman committed Tuesday night to play his college football for the Tennessee Vols.

Coleman, a 6-foot-4, 210-pounder, threw for 2,203 yards, 19 touchdowns and only three interceptions during his junior season.

He becomes the Vols' eighth commitment, joining another local standout -- Baylor running back Kevin Cooper.

McCallie Sports Information Trey Tucker said the offer came from Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer on Tuesday night.

"It took him only about 30 minutes to decide after coach Fulmer's offer,'' Tucker said.

Tucker said Coleman had been in contact with Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe for a few weeks.

"He told B.J. that out of more than 200 quarterbacks he has evaluated, that he was the one Tennessee wanted,'' Tucker said. "B.J. is such a fine young man. He has handled all this recruiting with a lot of humility.''

And a portion from The Chattanooga Times Free Press...

He chose the Vols over offers from UT-Chattanooga and Marshall. Several Southeastern Conference schools, including Alabama and South Carolina, had also shown interest.

"I’m sure I may take some visits," Coleman said. "But what I want to do is UT. That’s definitely my first priority. Actually, my first priority is winning the state championship (at McCallie)."

According to Coleman, he received a text message to call Fulmer from offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe, who was in Chattanooga on Tuesday to speak at the Times Free Press Best of Preps banquet.

Cutcliffe picked up on Coleman months ago, and has been the biggest factor in luring him to UT. The two worked together during a recent camp in Knoxville, where the McCallie senior showed off his arm and impressed coaches enough to earn a scholarship offer.

"They hadn’t seen that before, and I think that helped," Coleman said. "I can away with a lot of things to work on. Coach Cutcliffe, you can’t beat him. We definitely built a strong relationship. It’s deeper than just a coach and a quarterback."

Despite his prep baseball career, Coleman isn’t expected to play baseball for the Vols, according to McCallie football coach Ralph Potter. Coleman is the only 2007 quarterback commitment so far for Tennessee.

he's not ranked, we are in serious trouble. i think this recruiting year will be alot worse than last years, maybe in the 40's or 50's. :bad:

over-hyping recruiting classes can get you only two things, disappointed and delusional.

wonder why coach cutt wanted him so bad? Or does anyone respect the fact that we are pulling in-state talent away from serious contenders like SoCa and Bama? i guess those guys saw something that was worth an offer.

1 star 5 stars, i dont give a flying donkey puck..

yep. good enough for me.

ps. i think jimmy c. is looking for someone to ride shotgun in his Hummer. BLING BLING.

This kid can play. The biggest reason that Tennessee offered early was to cut off Alabama which was where he had also gone to camp. Like I said, I want kids that can play not kids with stars beside their name. :banghead:

Means nothing. Big Whoopie. Still has a year of highschool left. So what if he's unranked. Doesn't mean he sucks. We have enough 4 stars and up that suck. We need the working class.

I didn't realize he had camped at Alabama. That must be scrary being included with all the inbreds. Any kid that tells Bama to go f theirselves and selects Tennessee is already one of my favorites.

This guy has the size and a lot of upside with the right QB coach. They say he's smart on and off the field as well. Plus he's someone who really wants to play for Tennessee. I say welcome aboard.

Tyler Maples was talking about this kid on the radio the other day. He said he thought he could be a good player. I have to admit though, I am a little surprised we offered him this early.

The young man has size, ability, and a head on his shoulders.
At 6'4" and just going into a senior year, I'd imagine there is a place for someone with all those plusses to play. Even if he never steps under center.

I get what your saying but did it ever hurt USC signing 8 or 10 Five star recruits. I dont think so. And when did signing 8 or 10 no rankers ever help some of those lower end football programs. Never!

im sure smokedog knows something coach cutt doesnt. and we are SOLID at qb anyways..

i'm not even going to touch this one, i don't feel like getting suspended. we will just say from what i saw last year we are terrible at QB till i see something that says we are not. :bad:

I wouldn't say TERRIBLE, cause i do think we'll be better, but i also wouldn't use the word SOLID either going in to the season....it's the 2nd biggest question mark going in, behind the Offensivle line, and that's even debatable....qb could be the biggest question mark depending on who you talk to...

i can agree with that, we really don't know what we have. if that is the strength of our team though, might as well get prepared fo a losing record.

well, i think we won't have to worry about that...the strength right now looks to be the secondary....
