Newport Animal Shelter Closing - Euthanizing Animals July 1

Are you sure about the poorly thought out comment? Don't you think that they've met and discussed situations where somebody from the general public thinks they should be allowed to have outside animals and think that they know what's best for the pet that they want to adopt? You realize that those forming the policies collectively have years of shelter experience, are veterinary professionals, are members of law enforcement, and include others that are highly competent at understanding what is in the best interest of their animals?

There are very smart people working on writing up that adoption criteria and no doubt they've considered nearly every conceivable situation and thoroughly debated it before formulating their adoption criteria.

Everything that they do and consider in policy development is for the well being of their animals. That's why they exist.

Yes, I'm sure they're poorly thought out.

Any policy that would keep a dog caged it's entire life (since you keep bringing up no kill shelters) instead of in a safe outdoor area where it is loved and properly cared for is poorly thought out. It's just common sense.

They've seen everything imaginable. They know what is best for their animals' welfare and that often means members of the general public don't get what they want.

You can think what you want. Keeping a dog caged in a kennel its entire life or killing it is not better for it than a proper outdoor environment. I'm not even sure how this is a debate. I would have never thought someone would actually rather kill or imprison a dog than have it live on a loving farm. To each their own though.

A loving farm? LOL

Problem?

And I guess I should take that response as you would kill a dog before placing it in a proper outdoor environment?

I suppose that if you're stupid you would come up with that conclusion.

It has nothing to to with what I'd do. The Humane Society might euthanize a pet before placing it with an irresponsible owner though. But they'll also attempt to place their pets with responsible owners that adhere to their contract.

I'm glad that we're in agreement that it's stupid to kill a dog rather than place it with a responsible owner who keeps it outside.

The tricky part is that they must determine which owners are responsible. They've concluded that people that keep their pets outside aren't suitable owners for their sheltered animals. Their animals. Their criteria. Their decision.

Their mistake. But so be it. It's laziness by not wanting to dig further.

"We do not adopt out "outdoor pets." Pets that are left outside to do not bond as readily with their owners and are prone to nuisance behaviors like barking, escaping, roaming, digging, predatory behavior and other destruction. If applicants currently have an "outdoor pet" their adoption may be denied."

Seems pretty straight forward.

They don't have unlimited resources. It may not be laziness.

Shelters have to deal with stupid people all the time. Most of the pet over population problem would go away very quickly if moron humans would fix their pets.

Dude really makes a lot of assumptions about the competency of officials. There are a lot of real dumb "smart" people. Maybe he or someone close to him is in that field for him to be so slavishly defensive? If a group has a stupid policy, then chances are it is a group of no common sense morons.

For all we know the rule is for liability reasons. Just because they have put thought into it, doesn't mean it's what's best for the animals.

What do you think about zoos? Should they be shut down?

Don't get the big deal about having outdoor pets if you have the land or a fenced in area? Animals enjoy being outside. You should provide them shelter and safety. I would think it's more humane for a dog to be outside than sitting in a kennel for 8 hours a day.

Shows what you know. Dogs actually PREFER to be in a kennel all day until you come home. It makes them feel safe. And contrary to what you might assume about the descendants of wolves they hate it outside. The smells, the other animals, the grass. It's basically constant mental torture to make your dog be in nature. Only psychos do that. Put them in a crate, like God intended.

They also prefer being put down instead of living on cruel farm where they can run and play all day.

Haha maybe the people at the shelter think "farm" the same way so many kids pets went "to the farm" when they were old.

And where will you be keeping the animal?
We have a farm.
I KNOW WHAT FARM IS CODE FOR SIR.
