It broke the plane but the ref dude on Fox said that if a ball carrier fumbles inside the last two minutes of the half, he's the only person allowed to recover the fumble ahead of where it happened. If the ball hadn't crossed the goal line, it would have been placed where the fumble occurred.

Inside 2 minutes, unless the fumbling player recovers the ball, the offense cannot advance it. If he fumbled short of the goal line, then they'd get the ball short of the goal line.
