NFL Coaching Changes/Pink Slip Monday (merged)

Not sure why Gruden said he wasn't interested in any of the current opens? Lions would be a dream job with the talent they have in Detroit. A good coach could go far in the playoffs with this team.

It's obvious Haslam has no clue what he's doing.

How so? They don't want Norv as HC, which is understandable, so it makes no sense to keep him. You gonna force an offensive coordinator on your new head coach? Lombardi wants to make his own hire.

Any proven coach will wait until any of the other of the 31 positions are opened and any average coach will look at this Chud fiasco and realize that there are plenty of other options to choose from. This leaves only the awful coaches to actually consider Cleveland, which is par for the course for this organization.

I know very little about this current coaching staff, but I'm not sure what went wrong to deserve a firing. Big Jim is mad that he didn't get Chip Kelly, Jon Gruden or Nick Saban last year? How many of those possibilities exist this season?

Lovie Smith hired as Tampa Bay Bucs HC. TB seems to be a new funnel for UT head coach prospects.

New rumor is Oklahoma Head coach Bob Stoops to Browns. Great for UT since we play them next year

New rumor is Oklahoma Head coach Bob Stoops to Browns. Great for UT since we play them next year

Looks like you might have fallen prey to a twitter rumor storm:

Bob Stoops of Oklahoma Sooners not a candidate to coach Cleveland Browns - ESPN

ob Stoops is not a candidate to coach the Cleveland Browns.

A league source close to the Browns confirmed that Stoops has never been on Cleveland's radar and that the team will not interview the longtime Oklahoma coach.

The Browns have interviewed three NFL assistants and have asked permission to interview one college coach as they search for a replacement for Rob Chudzinski.

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels confirmed Monday that he met with the Browns on Saturday to discuss the coaching vacancy, although he didn't elaborate on the discussions.

Stoops, a native of Youngstown, Ohio, was connected to the Browns' coaching vacancy following Oklahoma's upset of Alabama in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Thursday. Stoops did little to quell the rumors Friday, saying "you never know" when asked by Oklahoma writers about his Cleveland connection.

Stoops has a 160-39 record at Oklahoma and became the only coach to win all four BCS bowls -- Sugar, Orange, Rose and Fiesta -- last week when the Sooners overwhelmed the third-ranked Crimson Tide 45-31.

Stoops received a contract extension in July through the 2020 season. He signed a seven-year, $34.5 million deal in 2011.

The Browns are in coaching search mode again after firing Chudzinski last week after one season. Owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner vowed to get their second coaching search in just more than a year "right" this time.

The Browns have lost at least 10 games in each of the past six seasons and are looking for their seventh full-time coach since 1999.

To date, the Browns have interviewed McDaniels, Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

"I know that's something that comes up each time this year for other coaches -- the opportunities are certainly flattering if they come up," McDaniels said Monday during his weekly conference call leading into the Patriots' AFC divisional round playoff game against the Indianapolis Colts. "That being said, I'm going to try to keep my focus on the Colts and our preparation this week.

"Like I've said in the past, I'm fortunate to have the job I have. I love being here. I love doing what I'm doing. Each opportunity that comes along is a little different. I'm going to leave it at that."

Denver offensive coordinator Adam Gase has declined interviews until the Broncos are out of the playoffs.

The Browns also have requested permission to interview Vanderbilt coach James Franklin. That interview is expected this week.
