NFL pre season prognostication

You know the Bengals had the Steelers (and Ravens) in mind when they signed Sam Adams to clog up the middle. That is one large man. Once they get Thurman back, I think the Bengals defense can be good enough for them to go back to the playoffs.
yep. and if pre season performance were any real barometer for reg. season success, i don't know how you could pick against the Bengals based on what i sas the other night....

#52
OK...after two weeks...jeez...i think a lot has changed...

Panthers...oh, the Panthers...we suck. Super bowl my a$$.

Early season suprises:
New Orleans
Chicago
Minnesota
Atlanta
Philly

All are better than i thought.

disappointments:
Carolina...just awful.
Miami
Washington
Tampa Bay

If i had to make a new pick for the SB...Indy vs. Chicago...they've been the best so far....and i'm not so sure that Chicago wouldn't win that game right now.

maybe it's just my status as a fan that blinds me, but the niners are MUCH better than I expected. if the defense catches up to the offense they could be contending in a year

yeah, i still think the verdict is out on the niners though...good win yesterday, offense did look good, but i'm not sure they can do that conistently...and getting in the playoffs in the NFC this year is going to be tough....Chicago and Atlanta seem to be the best...Seattle right behind and then it's a toss up between NYG, PHilly and Dallas...and TB or Carolina willl right the ship and possibly get in as a wild card....tough for two teams from the West to get in i think.

#56
#56
they may...but they got a long, long way to go...and TB is a must win....can't go 0-3....cause after that, you get NO, Cleveland, which they should win, then @ Baltimore, @ cincy, Dallas and TB again...if htey play the way they have so far, they could be 1-7 thru 8 games....every team besides TB and Cleveland are better right now than the Panthers.

After that, you get St. Louis, @ Washington, @ Philly, NYG, Pit, @ ATL and @ NO.

based on that schedule, given current level of play and injury status, they'll be lucky to win 7 games.

NFC might be a tough way to get to the playoffs this season. Those Wild Card spots might be tough to come by.

San Francisco does look a lot better than anyone thought they would. They are not a playoff team, and they stand no chance in their division against Seattle, but still a good team. Probably a couple games short of the wild card.

#58
I still wouldn't be surprised to see Carolina in the playoffs but they are FAR from Super Bowl material right now. The Saints are 2-0 but haven't played anyone yet. The Bears are looking very good but again they haven't played much. The Patroits are no where close to what they use to be either. My biggest surprise team so far is the Vikings.

They will go 10-6 IMO

My Picks:
NFC East: NY Giants
NFC North: Minnesota
NFC South: Atlanta
NFC West: Seattle
Wild Card: Chicago
Wild Card: Carolina

AFC East: New England
AFC North: Cincinnati
AFC South: Indianapolis
AFC West: San Diego
Wild Card: Baltimore
Wild Card: Jacksonville

Super Bowl: Atlanta vs. Indianapolis

that's a pretty good list...though i'd say right now Chicago is the front runner for the NFC north...and i don't know that Minnesota gets in...i still think the other wild card team from the NFC is coming from the East...Dallas or Philly.

the AFC...can't really argue that, but if Pittsburgh beats cincy this weekend, i'll like the Steeler's chance a lot more...they won't play as bad on offense the rest of the season as they did Monday night...but Balt and Cincy have been the most impressive thus far, can't argue that at all.

Yeah I should have put in I had the Eagles as my last one out in the NFC and the Steelers in the AFC.I really like Minnesota though, I say they beat the Bears this weekend. .

if they beat the bears, then they really are for real...and the steelers, well, it's a long season, and they are perfectly capable of winning the division and/or getting in as WC...but thru two games, i can't argue that the Bengals and Ravens have been more impressive...that division got real tough all the sudden.

Yep too bad for the Ravens and Bengals they are one hit away from playing Kyle Boller and Anthony Wright. And with their starters coming back from injuries that could be a concern. So yeah its a long season.

for me, this season presents a lot of different opportunities for a lot of teams....i think it's pretty wide open this year.....but, i digress...

NFC South...
1. Panthers, obvoulsy. I think Carolina has the goods this year, but the big drawback is the schedule....they play every team in the NFC south twice, the NFC East and AFC North, arguably the two toughest divisions in football.
2. Tampa Bay...not getting a lot of love from what i can tell, but they did win the division last year. I think they'll be extremely tough, but have the same problem as the panthers, schedule.
3. Falcons...they got better on Defense by adding Malloy and Abraham, but not sold on the offense...no real threats at WR, and Vick, i don't know.
4. Saints. they may be better, and i may be way off, but i can't see them being THAT MUCH better.

NFC East...
1. NY Giants...prolly the most balanced team in this division...can't ignore their weapons on offense, and are still very solid on Defense.
2. Dallas...For some reason, i think Dallas is going to be pretty good this season....not sure why?
3. Eagles...they simply won't suck. Ried is too good of a coach, and the offense will find a way...health is their key.
4. Redskins...i know this won't be popular(sorry OWB), but i do think they take a step back this year. Of course watch them now come out and win the darn thing.

NFC West...
1. Arizona...i know? if they have any kind of offensive line, they will put points on the board. D should be OK...and the rest of the division is not very good, and the past 5 super bowl losers failed to make the playoffs the next year....which brings me to...
2. Seattle...super bowl hangover and no way Alexander repeats what he did last year...
3. St. Louis...greatest show on turf turns in to what the hell happened?????
4. SF...they're just not going to be very good.

NFC North...
1. Chicago...on paper, thier the logical choice in a division that could be the worst in football.
2. Vikings...no culpepper, no moss, no mas.
3. Packers...Favres swan song goes out with a very small pop.
4. Lions. until they start winning, i'll never think these guys are any good...Matt Millen is rivalling MJ as the worst former player in management of a professional team.

AFC South...
1. Indy....basics of the offense return, most all the D returns (i think)....more of the same from Indy.
2. Jax....could sneak up on Indy if the qb situation doesn't turn them in....JAX should make the play offs...their biggest problem is that they play in the same division as the Colts.
3. TN...rebuilding is never easy, especially in a top heave division like this one.
4. Houston....uh, you were supposed to take Reggie bush!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AFC East...
1. New England...unti these guys lose, i won't pick against 'em....Brady bunch will be just fine and the D will be good enough.
2. Miami...Nick Saban is settling in, and i look for big things from them. a couple of lucky bounces and they could win this division.
3. NY Jets...is Chad Pennington the guy? IS curtis martin still playing? won't be enough this year.
4. Buffalo...JP lossman. Tulane. just gets me thinking about winning ways, what about you?

AFC West...
1. Denver...this is the hardest one to figure...jake has to prove he can win the big game in the playoffs....the offesne should be just fine and the D will be as good as last year, and it will be interesting to see if Cutler gets and PT should Jake falter...they seem to be very high on the rookie.
2. KC...love Herm Edwards. but not convinced that they have all the problems on D solved yet, and LJ will have to have a career season....
3. SD...breaking in the former wolfpack qb....i expect a big learning curve for the qb there this year.
4. Oakland....i'll tell you how bad Oakland is...they went after and signed anthony wright...the same guy that the Saints CUT!!!! that's bad. Plus could this team get any older?

AFC North...
1. Pittsburgh (homer pick i know) but the core of the team is back, big question is can Deuce Staley replace Bettis....and who is going to replace Bettis as the heart of this team? Is Big Ben ready to take that step? doubtful considering his wreckless, no pun intended, yeah, there is, offseason...but the core of the D will be there, the offensive core will be there...no reason not to think they won't be back as division champs.
2. Cincy....could very well repeat the division championship if Palmer is really healthy. the offense will pose problems for opposing defenses again, but the D has to toughen up, espcially against run oriented teams like Pittsburgh and Baltimore.
3. Baltimore...i know a lot of peopel are high on them, but i'm not convinced. this team is getting older, and J. Lewis has yet to return to pre prison performance....plus the offense hasn't exactly lit it up at all....i like the move of bringing in McNair...but can he stay healthy....? the d will be solid.
4. Cleveland...poor old Cleveland. they're just not going to be very good.

so, there's my division predictions...the wild cards:
AFC:
JAX or Miami and Cincy
NFC:
Tampa and Dallas

AFC championship:
Pittsburgh vs. New England
NFC championship:
Carolina vs. NY Giants

Super bowl
Carolina vs. New England

this time Carolina closes the deal and beats the Patriots.

that was fun. Go Steelers, Go Panthers.
a little accountability as we approach the half way point....

NFC South...Panthers aren't out of it...neither are the Falcons. Saints ARE THAT MUCH BETTER...for now. Bucs have shown they're not dead, but doubtful they get in to the playoffs. Mid season...Saints win it, Panthers 2nd.

NFC East...pretty close to being right here....the Giants appear to be the team to beat...Dallas has shown signs of being good, but then they take a step back...the Eagles don't suck, but they aren't contenders either. The Redskins have taken a step back.
Mid season...no changes...Giants win the division...Cowboys 2nd.

NFC West...Seattle is the class right now, but injured qb opens the door for STL...AZ has no defense, and are again, the cardinals...a non factor. SF is better, but not much. Mid season...Seattle wins Division, STL is 2nd.

NFC North...Chicago is the leader, and will continue to be. Minnesota is a good team but not quite there. GB and Det..bring up the rear. so no changes here either.

AFC South...no changes here either...JAX proves to not have an offense...and until someone knocks off Indy...they're it.

AFC East...just be glad the Patriots are in this division...and not the West...the Broncos are the only team that owns the Pats. the other three teams are a long way a way from the Pats...no changes here..and the Pats are the only team to make the Playoffs from this division.

AFC West...Denver still class of this division...KC still has no defense, and has qb issues. SD has been the suprise...very impressed with Mr. Rivers. OAk sucks.

AFC North...hm...the Steelers are a bad team right now with issues at qb, the whole d is overrated right now, and special teams have been absolutely awful... Running game is virtually non existent, and now Deuce couldn't replace anyone.... Bengals have looked good, and looked bad. Ravens are overrated. Browns suck. Cincy should win the division...Ravens and Steelers will be battling for 2nd.

chicago and Seattle get 1st round byes this season in the NFC...and Denver and INdy get them in the AFC.

Two of your last place teams, are two teams I'm looking to maybe break out and finish... 3rd in their division.

New Orleans - That offense is vastly improved with Brees at QB. Even without Bush, I'd be saying this. IF, and of course it's a big if, Brees is healthy and close to his form from the last two years, that offense can be very formidable. Brees, McAllister, Horn, Stallworth, plus whatever Bush can bring to the table.

Detroit - I'm a believer in the Mike Martz offensive scheme. The Lions might not have the weapons that Martz had in St. Louis, but he has a decent enough QB in Kitna, plus who knows how good the weapons in Detroit can be? They've never been utilized in a system like Martz' with an adequate QB like Kitna.
Well, I hit on New Orleans, although they're doing even better than I thought.

Missed it on Detroit. It's Detroit, afterall.

Yeah I need Plummer to lose games for them even though it will be tough with that defense. And Minny won't win the north it appears but flip them with the Bears for the wild card and at least I hit on the playoff participants :)

hm...not much has changed...well, maybe it has.

panthers/Saints gunning it out for the South...i'll stick with NO winning it and Car finishing 2nd.

in the East...Dallas now looks to be the team to beat...Philly may now in fact be done. The skins are still done. NYG...offense? anyone?anyone? they have the talent to get there....but they got a long way to go. I like Dallas to take the East if they continue to play the way they are right now.

The west...it's Seattle all the way, but don't look now, the niners aren't terrible!!!

the North...still Chicago's to lose. no other playoff team in this division.

in the AFC...
AFC West...wow..SD/DEN what a game. i'm more and more impressed with Rivers. and Tomlinson is everything people say he is...i like the Charges in the West, with the Broncos 2nd right now.

in the East...still the Pats.

in the South...ok indy lost. they still win the division. Jax 2nd

in the North...it's getting a bit muddled up here...it seems no one really is separating themselves...though i think Baltimore might eek it out if Cincy doesn't figure themselves out.

division winners:
NFC south: New Olreans
NFC north: chicago (1st round bye)

well, a lot has changed as we head in to the last weekend of the season. Got some right, got more wrong, but hey, that's why they play the games right?
New Orleans, Chicago and Seattle all did what i thought, the second time around anyway, and whoda thunk that Philly could still win the division with Jeff Garcia at qb???? didn't see that coming...

in the AFC, got the divison winners, 1st round byes are a little different, and the wildcard still in debate...didn't think the Jets would be in the mix, that much i know for sure and i defnitiely didn't think the titans would even be in the conversation this late.

but oh well...it's been interesting this year that's for sure.

so i'll say that SD and New Orleans make it to Miami...:salute:
