Nick Saban Retiring - CONFIRMED

Yes. Saban would have had similar success at Georgia, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, Florida, Texas AM and maybe even South Carolina or Arkansas. This is where Alabama fans are wrong. They think their program is naturally stronger and that's just not true. On a balanced playing field they are no better than any of the places I mentioned.
Saban's success came from having better players than everyone. That's why he didn't want everyone to be able to pay players like he did for 15 years.

I don't think Lanning will be getting back on the plane to Oregon without a contract. He's the one, makes the most sense - a young, successful coach and great recruiter who is very familiar with the SEC. Also knows Kirby's plan inside out.
I think it's Lanning too. He's young enough to take the risk of following Saban and if he proves himself, he'll be there until he's got a couple of mansions like Saban. If he fails, he's young enough to resurrect his career somewhere else.

An older coach has to SET, like Jimbo or Dabo, because failing at Bama after Saban will likely mean their career is pretty much toast.

I guess Kiffin is a wild card. He would crawl all the way to Tuscaloosa from Oxford if they asked him but I don't think they'll ask him unless they hear some hard "No, thanks, not even for that amount" from others.

No one is touching Jimbo (at least at Power 5 level) after that failure at A&M.

I just don't think Kiffin will leave with what he's building in Ole Miss and continues to say how happy his family is in Oxford, but with Lane, never say never, I suppose.

This will be an unpopular opinion, but I never like it when great coaches leave the league, it always takes a little juice away. Like when Spurrier left Florida - everyone celebrated, but it took something away from the UT-UF rivalry. I hate to see Saban leave just as UT is getting back to a competitive level, and the TSIO will just not be the same. I was planning on going down for the Bama game this season (saw the TSIO in Bear's last season, and was hoping to do the same in Saban's), but now it loses a bit of its luster. Just my opinion.
What “family”? The kids he’s forced to see the mandated one month a year? 😉

Nice timing also. Recruited a top class with no doubt assurances he’s got “a lot left in the tank!” and even tho their special portal will extend for 30 days, many are already attending classes. Classy til the end. 😒

What was to stop other colleges from paying player? Ethics? Please. Auburn did it, plenty of others. Probably most everybody.

Oregon has to feel like Arkansas State West by this point. 😏

No, but he has the money now to fail anywhere and still retire well, as does Dabo. I don't think either of them are "top tier" in this era.

Dabo because he's not realized that working the portal some is an essential piece of the game now whether it's bad for the sport or not.

Jimbo because he's just not that good. He's had his 15 minutes of fame and got filthy rich. Good for him. I can't imagine he wants a job.

I live in Alabama, so it's all I'm hearing right now... The crazy thing is they said he was interviewing coaches today for the DC position and then suddenly at 4pm he called a meeting and retired. One of their db's was on a show the other day and was asked if he thought saban would retire.. He replied Coach Saban will die on the football field before he retires. It's been said that no one had any idea of this happening before the meeting. I really hope they didn't get some bad health news today.
That’s what I’m wondering about. I hope that’s not it, but it could be him or his wife. Getting old sucks

This is the chance for Heupel to make up for any roster deficiencies and raid the Bama roster. We can finally pick up a game breaking S like Downs and shore up our OL for the future by getting a guy like Proctor. Coach needs to get on this ASAP, until now, his roster management has been abysmal and we can right the ship in a 2 week span. All in to win it with Nicoooooooo!
Man ….
