Nico and the future

I'm not sure what plans are honestly. I believe in Heupel but we have some weakness on staff. OC/QB, WR and OL imo when looking around and seeing what others are getting done. Not sure all of them have to change but I would start with OL
I'm not as down on O line. The sacks they have given up have been in conference play, so you gotta cred SEC defenses for some of that, but still more per game than they should. As a whole, if Banks doesn't get lured away, just let him do his thing, and get the Ofeense in general on track. It's a shame he brings all that this year and the O doesn't lend a hand. And by that I mean, if our O performed even 50% of what the D brought every game, I dare say we'd be undefeated with multiple blowouts. Sampson is the only one not named Nico or Mays that played like he had a job to do game after game. And the majority of our lackluster performances IMO still goes squarely back to receivers. If you are protecting yourself for hte draft, then by god go rack up the stats and earn it.

Hard to disagree if I'm truly honest. I thought Spraggins got mauled. Campbell, Heard just confused me. Heard I think will be good now that he is in better shape. Karic played ok, but we need better development there for sure. The WRs have been pretty bad and the route tree just really isn't great.

Case in point on my previous post, look at just hoe bad Beck has been last 6 games, and look what his receivers did for him Saturday to bail him out and get him on track for that game. And hte game didn't start out that way. We had them backpeddling, with 3 consecutive punts to open their game. Then someone decided they needed to help their QB, and they all stepped up. not just one. We haven't had that. Granted, I've been questioning Nico's progress over the season, but I've evenly laid that responsibility on the receivers too. By and large, they haven't done much for him. The lone exception would be Kitsleman, and he came through multiple times, and for whatever reason, they didn't capitalize on it by going back to him.

I think we blew an opportunity to pull off that road game, but I did predict 10-2 in another thread. Ark just replaced my Bama loss is all. I'm not disappointed in the GA game or the season, but we had a sleeper we could have stolen. My only criticism is that though Nico is a Freshman in an SEC schedule he has shown no significant uptick from game 1 to game 10. Not looking for miracles, but there should be a noticeably different QB right now 10 games in verses early season. Even for a freshman. A quality freshamn to boot.
This. Nico may have improved more than I think. He may end up as the generational talent folks seem to think he is . . . And as I have said, an average SEC oline can make any QB look bad / average.

The truth is we don’t know what Nico will be. Yet.

Are you serious? We have Jake here already and George, who's a stud, coming in 25 and the number 1 player, in the country, committed for 26 who also happens to be a QB
Totally serious question. I don't keep up with recruiting much, so didn't know that. It sure has always helped get a QB when your coach has coached NFL players and Heisman type candidates. I just don't know enough about the NIL impact to know how it changes things in this CFB culture.

I think the Winter workouts will really help Heard and the rest of the Oline. We some good young talent and it neerds to show up in the off season.

Just curious - and maybe this is just me - but do our two starting tackles (one more than the other) have body language which makes a person think they would rather be somewhere else? And I don’t mean another school - I mean bordering on disinterest. Maybe I’m being too critical and subconsciously looking to nitpick. Although I have not had these feelings about the three IOL.

Recruiting is just now ranking in the Top 10. That has to make a difference.
I hope

I hope our recruiting improves; there is no reason Auburn, Oklahoma, etc., has been better than us for 2 years in a row. Our average star is 19th, which is uncalled for considering Hugh Freeze is on the hot seat and we have been good the last couple of years. I am not trying to bash the staff, but it needs to get better.

A lot of you might not know this, but I’m a former strength athlete, mainly in powerlifting. I’ve always been fascinated by strength and conditioning — whether it’s reading about it, performing it, or just watching athletes develop. That’s why I can’t help but think about the incredible potential of our quarterback, Nico Iamaleava.

At 6’6” and roughly 216 pounds (thanks, Google), he’s already a physical specimen. But as I watch him play, I can’t help but imagine what he could be like if we added another 15 to 20 pounds of solid muscle to his frame. His dad looks like a massive dude, so I’d bet Nico has the genetics to fill out in all the right ways. If the staff can help him build that strength while maintaining his agility and running ability, I think we’re in for an exciting future with this young man. The sky’s the limit for him in this offense. Go Vols!

This offense does not have a WR1.

The wide receiver room is comprised of WR2's.

You’re describing Joe Milton.
What he needs and what will help him is improving the basic fundamentals that all great QB’s have.

I believe experience will get him there.

We have the number one lineman coming next season. What exactly do you mean the coaching staff hasn’t hit on anyone? This isn’t a Penn State forum.
Volsloco is saying the staff has not had a high school recruit play a significant role yet, which is the truth. You can look it up. He has lived on Pruitt’s recruits/transfers

I think it's a combo of Halze and not trusting the WR's seeing what he is he does. I think he will be a very good qb of we can keep him upright and get him some real weapons. Thornton and Bru are all he has really with a side of Squirrel but none have been reliably open. I will say if we had a wr the caliber of Tate or Williams Nico looks a lot different but we do not.
Apparently you WR pundits do not notice we have had WRers running behind the defense almost every game. If you watched others parts of the game except the player with the ball, you would see wide open receivers while Nico is scrambling.
I think Nico will be very good but he’ll probably need to stay at least 2 more years. Don’t know how that will affect our future 5* commits. It does concern me he is not putting up better stats than than Sellers, considering the difference in talent.

Maybe watch him running for his ***** life then wonder why his eyes are not where you think they should be QB guru. Just because he is rolling right and a wr all the way across the field breaks after he started his scramble does not mean the guy was open. That's how turning the ball over happens. Sure he has missed a few but that is normal. All these WR you say are open are not always infact open and they have dropped as many as he has missed. Let's see where the WR's end up in the draft lol. It is never just the QB on any team you have to have dependable guys around you. Not inconsistent players at every level from the OL to the WR to even the TE's have had drops and not get open. Sampson has even turned the ball over in scoring position but he'll it's all Nico and you are worried he will need to stay 2 more years. Nice post

Not claiming to be a guru, are you? Plenty of finger pointing at the WRers not getting separation or not getting open. That is not true. Yes they have dropped passes but they do get open. I love Nico’s upside, but he isn’t “currently“ in the same league with the run of QBs Bama threw out there for several years. The OL is just not what it needs to be with his current talent level and the style of offense CJH runs. It take a lot of time and experience to perfect.

He could become Josh Allen like IF he puts on 25 pounds of muscle. Not saying he will -
But he has the frame for it.

My concern is oline play. Not good this year at times - especially against SEC teams in road games.

Losing Mays is a major concern. I’m not sure we have what we need to succeed next year with oline play.

Also - until the line and Nico can go up tempo . . . This offense will be limited. Not up tempo makes this a MUCH easier offense to defend.

We are now on year two of a pedestrian offense. A third year of this . . . And recruits will notice.
This!! :(

This type of comment I can get behind. Some of them get open, the problem is inconsistent play from a lot of guys who are seniors. The numbers look much different if they just catch the balls that hit them in the hands. Several come to mind. It isn't just one thing offensively it is a multitude of inconsistencies. They look different without the holds and putting us behind the sticks. Yards are at a premium in this league especially on the road in a night game. Nico should be expected to have some growing pains it's fair to critique his game but not to the point that he is expected to make miracles happen. A great QB can win games at times. None of them do without consistent support and guys doing their job.
