Nico In Heisman Trophy Conversation

I REALLY wish this would stop already. Are they trying to sabotage UT? Nico has really played in ONE GAME. Let's see what he does when the mantle is on him totally before crowning him.

I think a lot of our fans lack the nerve to wait and see. Celebrating before the fact is for people who don’t really believe it can happen.

I personally will embrace the hype. It means we have a stud, even if he doesn’t make it to NY in 2024.

Much more preferable than the days of trotting out Guarantano knowing you were penciled in for a frustrating 7-6 year.
..ouch. Gotta let that go, boo. Focus on the next game. 1-0 today!

The people that pump this stuff are the first ones to be calling for the coaches head after the first bad game. They are the ones you ABSOLUTLY don't want to be around during any game. They are just annoying. Heisman?? What's that? Who cares?
I was just thinking the very same thing. Guys talking Heisman now will be ready for the back up if Nico takes time to settle in.... which is more likely than him winning the Heisman imo.

I’ve kinda given up. My proctologist sez this is a good development.

look, I know nothing. But just the vibe I got when he was playing Iowa was awesome.

Makes good and quick decisions.

For the other ones who feel that some of the backup QBs had some nice moments in practice…really? You think based on a practice they are better.

We have bowl game, with Nico dominating, albeit a not complete as before the bowl game Iowa defense.

The guy balled out and that his first start at UT. Imagine with some games under his belt.

Is he the best in everything in practice? Who knows. Maybe the “it factor” comes out when the runner meets the road game day time. IE Dobbs/Hooker situation. Unless your @LittleVol , he knows ha

Posted the odds. Look at all that experience above him. It’s awesome, after one bowl game, to even be thought of to be in that spot.

Rat 🐀 poison, I tell ya!
Chuckie - you are one of the best and most loved Vol Nationites of all time. I do though differ w you when it comes to UT players being tabbed for speculative chatter concerning the Heisman. I hope our entire team, coaches and fan base focus on Wins. If we get to a point where we have lots of Ws and, one of our players is rising to the top, I would be glad to jump in on the conversation. Until that point, I focus on the Team winning games, as Heisman chatter can be a huge distraction.

If Nico is even close to what we all "hope" he'll be there's every reason to believe he'll have a very good season. Even better if the defensive backfield holds up (and we stay healthy) that should lead to a very, very good season overall. Some might forget but in '22 when Hooker was chasing a Heisman we were also averaging 200ypg rushing and 1st (yes, 1st) in the SEC in rushing TDpg. So with what coach wants to do if Nico can just do his part well, not even be extraordinary, we should have a balanced and very effective offense. I think that happens. If the defensive backfield can pull together with what basically everyone things of our front 7 it should make for some happy Vol fans. If Nico exceeds expectations? That could turn into something special for us.

Joe Milton III was in the pre-season and I think even very early season Heisman conversation.

There's less college level data on Nico than there was on Joe and that Heisman talk was unwarranted then.

While it's fun, it's just setting expectations that we can't possibly know about Nico and, most likely, sets up disappointment.

If Nico is in the conversation NEXT pre-season, I'll think we have enough info to raise our hopes.

He absolutely got snubbed. He was leading the Heisman race even late into the season. One injury and he got left off. It was BS whether you want to believe it or not.
It goes by the number of votes you get. It's not like someone could arbitrarily invite him. He didn't get enough votes to be in the top four. Period. Now, the injury could have had something to do with that.

How do you know he was leading? How would anybody know? Doesn't really matter. What matters is how you finish. He finished fifth. Top four get invited to New York. It's that simple.

It's actually not.

It isn't necessarily 4, or at least it wasn't the last time I paid attention. The heisman committee looks for a "natural breaking point" among the top vote-getters. Could be 3 invited to NYC, or 4, or 5. There may even have been a year when 6 were invited, though I think that would be very rare.

As for Hendon, yes, he did lead at one point during the '22 season in the Vegas odds. If you want to go back and look for it, start your search around the week prior to the Georgia game.

Go Vols!

EDIT: My bad, you're right about 4 finalists. Guess they changed to that a few years ago.

Yes sir. It changed in 2021. I, like others, was ticked off that Hendon didn't get an invite. So I looked into why.

He might put up some crazy numbers. I don't think he'll top H.H. in 22, that was legendary stuff, but he could certainly be top of the SEC in all purpose yards. That alone might be enough to warrant an invite to the ceremony. Heupel's offense is almost custom tailored to create a Heisman candidate at QB.
And RB if you don't have 3 to spread the ball around. Sampson could be special.
