I think Nico has been playing fine and I'm a little surprised by this stat ESPN included in their Alabama Tennessee preview.

QBR is a hodgepodge rating invented by ESPN in 2011 to use for their content, so I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. A lot of Tennessee's scoring has come from running the ball, especially in the red zone, and Nico has surrendered quite a few turnovers. Note that NOTHING about the QBR takes into account the circumstances of why these stats are what they are. Not the lack of offensive line play, not the quality of defenses played, not the circumstances of each team's offensive possessions, none of that. All it does is take a variety of offensive and results values and throws them all in a mixer which then spits out a number for ESPN to use when writing sports articles.

tl;dr - Nico is 5-1 in winning this year and that's the only damn stat that counts.

I agree...but it's going to need to look alot better vs Bama if we're going to win. Bama has the best offense we've played this year. I think we can limit them, but I'd imagine they're going to score. I think Nico and crew are not that far off and Saturday's the perfect time to show it

Nico's numbers are going to suffer as a result of the offense as a whole struggling. He hasn't played well, but not as bad as his numbers indicate. We have, for good reason, relied on Dylan Sampson when in the redzone and as a result Nico doesn't get as many TDs. The lack of TDs really hurt his numbers.

But also, the OLine continues to put the offense behind the sticks with penalties. Additionally the starting field position for the offense has been terrible and we are putting Nico in long 3rd down situations far too much. I'll be interested to see how his numbers change for the 2nd half of the season..

Playing fine? Listen I know he’s young and has to grow, but his play is no better than that of JG years ago. People were trying to run him out of here.

I’ll tell you which rating doesn’t lie. The good ol the test. Nico hasn’t passed that one yet. I’ll agree the Oline takes some blame. But if you enjoy watching film as I do I suggest you go back and watch. Or watch a breakdown. Nico has missed and faltered plenty on his own. Reads, open receivers, staring down receivers, fumbles, interceptions, you name it. I’m not screaming get him out of here, but it’s also time some of you stop blaming everyone but him.

Agreed .

If I were to put it in percentages.

1) Playcalliing 60%
2) Nico 25%
3 Oline 13%
4) various (injuries/penalties etc) 2%

regardless of whether you like this stat, it is a matter of concern.

Hopefully, Nico will perform much better than in other previous SEC games.

You must admit, regardless of who is at fault, he has not performed well thus far in SEC play.

Agree - he has not performed well since we started the SEC games.

I'm hoping someday he turns into Hooker 2.0 but it hasn't happened yet.

I didn't blame everyone but him. I said QBR doesn't take the context of a team's offensive possessions into account - or at least, I don't think it does. I cited examples of things that I imagine are not calculated as part of their formula. Admittedly, speculative, but I don't think they do "context." I suppose I could be wrong, but I don't believe I am. And to my knowledge, ESPN has never released the calculations used to create their QBR rating, so we'll never know for certain. Regardless, nowhere in my statement did I say Nico was faultless or playing great at the position.

But going back to the original point, I don't think Nico's "QBR rating" should worry the original poster one bit.

I think I might make it more like 45 - 40 playcallin - nico. The playcalling probably hindered because nico isn't very good, and the Oline isn't great.
