Nike Adidas and Under Armour Tell Lavar Ball To Pound Sand

Ok.

(1) How about Duke's campus being nicknamed "The Plantation" by the majority black residents of Durham because of the fact that it was black people from Durham cleaning up after rich white kids from around the country?

(2) How about every service employee on campus being black outside of the McDonald's in the Bryan Center that for some reason only hired Mexicans?

(3) How about the "black bench" on West campus at the bus stop where black students used to hang out waiting for the buses taking people to east and central campus?

You might not have noticed all this because your experience wasn't the same as mine being a black man on a campus like Duke. But honestly the only memories I have of Duke was the racism I and many other black students experienced.

So excuse me for not remembering the names of buildings. What I remember instead is the fact that all of west campus was designed by a black architect who was not allowed to visit Duke to see his work because be was black and it was still during the times of Jim Crow.

That's right...you can't remember normal everyday stuff because racism.

Nice try Marcus Garvey...being black and experiencing discrimination on a predominantly white college campus in the south doesn't cause memory loss.

Otherwise I wouldn't remember living in Simpson Hall Room 322 back in 1986...or living in Beatty Towers Summer A 1987...then moving off-campus to Bicycle Club with two Jewish roommates from 1987-89...then getting my own spot In the Pines my junior and senior year before graduating in 1990.

Spare us the race baiting BS. You got exposed... :eek:lol:

I'm guessing all he knows of Duke is from this:

http://www.newblackmaninexile.net/2016/04/being-black-duke-alum-is-form-of.html

and whatever else he could glean online that he could claim as personal experience.

Barring some degenerative brain condition or injury the idea that one is going to simply "forget" the sort of things discussed here is utterly laughable.

No. I didn't say that. I just remember the most significant stuff from my experience at Duke. And the most significant stuff I experienced at Duke were related to race.

It pained me to see older black women having to clean up after rich white kids. For example, I still remember cleaning up after myself all throughout my first year on East campus when we had a custodian who would clean up after us. I didn't want to give that nice old black lady anymore work than she was getting.

I also remember having a good relationship with all the food service employees at the freshmen cafeteria on East campus. I was one of the few brothas on campus so the brothas who worked at the cafeteria struck up a friendship with me. The freshmen cafeteria on East campus is one of the few places they hired black men at.

I don't know how many times I remember being asked if I played on the football or basketball team. Its not like I'm super tall or swool. People just assumed that because I was a black male at Duke I was there because of sports rather than academics.

This is the type of stuff I still remember. Not names of buildings.

Thanks for the link. Powerful article by the sista.

Just goes to show that the collective experience at Duke was the same for eveyone who is black.

I'll add another nugget. The barber shop on west campus had just one black barber. This real old brotha who was in his 70s or 80s. One day it was just me and him there and as he was cutting my hair, he gave me the breakdown on the racism issues at Duke. He was working at Duke since segregation and I remember him telling me the same people fighting against integration at Duke when he was there are the same people still running the school now. And he told keep your eyes open young brotha and make sure you know exactly who these people are.

You're welcome for the link. The difference is I bet Bianca Williams would be able to name the sort of things you've supposedly "forgotten" and a whole lot more, racism and all.

Since, you know, we've got reason to believe she's an alum.

Did you know the iconic goth artichtecture at Duke's West campus was designed by a black man? A black man who wasn't even allowed to visit the campus and see his work because of Jim Crow segregation?

I remember something like that more than I remember the name Card Gym.

Once again I don't care if you don't believe me.

I don't need validation from anyone on here.

You googling *****. For someone who doesn't care, you really seem to be determined to keep babbling lies and absolute bull****.

There were two black barbers on campus at the Reitz Union. The barber shop was next door to the arcade, a spot called the Space-n-Gator.

Roy and Angie were the two black barbers. Both cut my hair, but Roy could tighten me up a little better than Angie.

Roy also was a decent hoops player back in the day, and every now and then I'd play pickup ball with him off campus at the Depot public courts.

Clearly I did not experience enough racism on campus to remember all that.

No I didn't know that. I didn't go to Duke.

You should look up Duke's racist history online. When you're in the old folk's home and your grandkids come to visit, you'll be able to tell them about the architecture and the cafeteria ladies even if you can't remember your grandkids' names. It will be a real Hallmark moment.

Nope. I honestly don't even know or remember the dudes name. That story was just really powerful and stuck with me. Especially when everyone who visits Duke always talks about the beautiful architecture yet barely anyone knows it was all designed by a black man. The black people on campus we knew that.

You misunderstand...you are very much validating what many have suspected. What you think of it really isn't all that relevant, although it does seem to drive you to keep commenting in ways which further validate those suspicions.
