“@AdamZagoria: Incoming Tennessee frosh Derek Reese had 20 and 16 as Puerto Rico won its first game at @nikeglobal over China, 84-71. Will have story later”

“@TomSatkowiak: Nike Global Challenge averages for @dpreese2313: 21.0 ppg, 12.3 rpg, 1.3 spg in 32.0 mpg. He shot .458 overall, .400 from 3FG, .917 FTs”

Well either I can't do math, Tom can't do math or there was a 5th game I didn't know about?

Only 4 that they show at the Nike Global Challenge website. I didn't do all the numbers but I know 8 for 26 is not 40%. So I think maybe he can't do math.

Average for the tourney...

32 minutes 20ppg 11.3rbd 45%fg 31%3pt 86%ft

The thing that stands out to me in that stat line is his FT shooting. All other things come and go based on competition level and whether people are really playing defense. But FT% usually translates pretty well. Also, good FT shooters are usually good shooters in general.

Your math isn't off. Neither is Satkowiak's or Quinn's. The difference is they aren't counting his 2nd game, because they apparently don't know it happened.

Quinn, maintaining the excellence we have come to expect from KNS.

Well wiggins and Lyles are studs, don't know anything else about the other international guys though.

Congrats to Derek.

Starting to believe in this guy.

Really does make you wonder where this version of Derek Reese has been hiding. If he played like this last summer, his offer list would have looked a lot different. Hard to imagine a kid who could do this, wouldn't average double figures in high school.

Hope he finally figured it out and got a dose of confidence at the same time.

That's my biggest question...

If you can average 20/14 against some of the top HS players in the country, how can you not average double figures against Florida HS competition?

Coaching? Teammates? Doesn't really matter as long as he turns it on at UT. Be a great 30 for 30 story 15 years from now.

hmm. I figured the first game was a fluke and the stats would show true to what we believed against the USA teams but i'm impressed. Was his HS team loaded or something? Maybe he didn't play a lot of starter minutes or just wasn't given the chance to show what he could do? I dono. Very interested to see more of this kid and what he can do.

I looked on Rivals and they had one other guy from His high school listed in the 2012 class on their service and none in 2013. That guy is going to Tulane and only averaged about 15ppg so it's not like there weren't points available. And MaxPrep had Olympia High School ranked #15 in the state of Florida, so it's not like his team was under the radar (at least not in-State). I can't figure it out either, but I'm not complaint if everyone else missed him and CCM found him.

Me either. Just seems odd that he does that well against top HS competition in the tournament but isn't explosive in HS. I'll hold judgement until i see him play. Will be interesting.
