NIL $ and walk-ons vs scholarship spots

your talking about 2 kids who most likely would not play just to get from 83 to 85? We are going to have several really good receivers who are on scholarship this coming year get minimal reps in backup roles. I just don't see the point in doing it. They would not get someone that could indeed help.

I just have to believe our staff will have guys that they have evaluated better than their star ratings, not as good as those we prioritize to sign, but good enough to spend a few bucks on and get better and deeper and maybe some late blooming risk/reward winners without breaking the bank. I lobbied for this as a way, if necessary, to add Bishop last year.

In this brave new world, I also CONTINUE to propose we take an alternate route to maximizing our roster by having the collective to work deals for VFL WALK OFFS. Guys that have peaked at scout team level and will accept some non premium NIL money to give up their schollie without getting DEIONED so their COUNTER can be used for new HS or portal additions. Make them trainers or recruiting volunteer analysts, etc. Probably have a shot at better players than the PWO PLUS method.

How much would the staff pay to get to go from 85 to 87 counters? Or for us 83 to 85 or more? There is some limit to value since you can only let 70 get on the plane.

Lots of potential ways to maximize roster with NIL other than the sexy BIG FISH deals.

Not proposing having 20 or so paid PWO’s, but a coupe of ways to replace the risk/reward counter misses without going the mercenary route. Results could be similar. They would simply give us more or better players to yield from without giving up the moral high ground.

I see the value for kids that would get the opportunity. Maybe its a PR sell for future kids that might look favorable to Tennessee. Be a help on the scout team.

Just don't see getting victories on the football field from the practice. Not against it in anyway in the new world of college football (which I believe will be dramatically different world in 5-10 years0 that we live in now.

Guess I am just playing the odds. If you bring in MORE or bring in BETTER guys down the board your odds of getting some misses or development surprises that get drafted 4-5 years down the road goes up. That has to be BETTER. Good use of money? TBD.

The better you get the higher you set the bar. The fewer you need the more premium guys you go after. It is the upwardly mobile G5 entries I want to watch in May more than the P5 disgruntled. Though some p5 guys that hang around after coaching changes 30 day window, find they are better fits elsewhere after scheme changes in the spring, bear watching too.

It is a new box now, not thinking outside the old box.

Every year is going to have a new box. Being able to adapt to constant change is going to be interesting

schools cannot put any money at all into an NIL. Its not a hypothetical, its against state law.

Yes it is true the school can't directly put money into NIL (NCAA is making proposals to change this), but this is not the point. A player can get NIL money which can be used to pay for school fees.

the proposals by NCAA will have to have 50 states rework their laws to put into place. I'm not familiar with their proposal but certain it would create changes to the laws...

Agree, there are walk-ons getting NIL money, not a lot, which can help with their fees. I suspect though, they spend it on other things and let Mom and Dad handle the school fees. LOL

I do remember this proposal now that you have posted it. My guess is, about half the schools in the Big 10 and SEC will opt out of this with only about half opting in. Schools losing money will have a difficult time making this work... There are only about 25 Athletic Departments in P5 that make money.

Tennessee has 580 student athletes and even making money this will strain their budget. Then, you have to wonder how the state legislature will view all of this as they have to approve and can modify public school budgets each year. Will they alter Nico's NIL down? Not saying they will because I just have no clue how that is going to be viewed. One thing I do know, we will then get to see how much money goes to the Athletes. Not a specific athlete, but the total athletes.

With the NIL, I'd have to assume schools can stockpile "walkons" like Bama and the Huskers used to do back in the day. Even better, it negates the totally unfair advantage Vandy had in baseball. In short, the playing field has been leveled and speaking just for myself, I suspect that's a big reason Saban called it quits. When you have to compete on the aforementioned level playing field, it's just a little harder to maintain that level of success. Stud would have enjoyed this new era of college football...may he RIP.
TennStud never worried about any silly rules, cash leaves no tracks. Went to his Saturday party once while visiting Memphis, like a frat party for adults. Fun
