Being told why makes no difference. It's discrimination.

So? Discrimination is a part of almost everything we do. Discrimination isn't always unjust or unfair.

In this case it was VERY just and VERY fair. Her weight causes extra wear and tear to the seat. Why should someone who isn't fat pay more because she destroys the company's property?

This is purely ignorant. You have no idea why she is overweight.

Doesn't matter. All that matters is that it costs that company more money to serve "large" clients than small ones. It isn't fair that the small ones pay more for service because of women like her.

"Wear and tear" is part of the cost of doing business. It should be factored in accordingly.
That is precisely what they did.

Should a handicapped person be charged more for a meal because the restaurant is required to build a ramp for access?

Restaurants shouldn't be required to build ramp access. They should certainly do it. If they don't the press should run them into the ground... but they should not be required.

I am sure there will be some kind of precedent set for obesity discrimination in the near future. As we as a race get bigger there are going to have to be guidelines on what is considered discriminatory and what is not. I.E. is it discriminatory for airlines to charge obese passengers more?

If they take more than one seat, then I can see the airlines point. Why was the fat lady taking more than one bed?:p

so what if a person is naturally big but just not out of shape (or fat). Are they making the determination on just size or on a person by person basis? I know some very large, in-shape people who I am sure outweigh this woman but doubt they would get the same treatment

that's a safety issue and not the same thing

the percentage of people who are that fat with legit thyroid issues and hte like are very very small. but even those who have thyroid issues don't HAVE to be fat, it's just much harder. it's still calories in and calories out and exercise. it's not that complicated.

I would be interested to see a no BS list of this womans consumption of fast food and HFCS. Pretty sure there would be no surprise on my end of the results.

Cal once did a metabolism check on 1,000 obese people and found out something like 95% of them had normal metabolisms. hell i should probably lose 20 pounds, but i don't blame genetics. it's booze and food and not enough exercise.

it's usually not hard to figure out why someone is that fat if you hang out with them. i have a friend and his wife that are both 100+ pounds overweight and we went to a buffet and she literally ate twice as much as i did and i'm a big guy. others will claim they don't eat a lot and then binge when they get home. there's this woman at my work who is always on a diet and eats salads every day but then puts at least 1,000 calories of dressing on these huge salads. it's not brain surgery here.

Obesity is not a handicap. It's a lack of self-control and laziness.

while this is true for the majority, there are also health issues that can cause obesity. thyroid issues have been known to make people swell.

People are always looking for someone/something else to blame... and our society only makes it easier for them to do that.

While there are legit reasons for being overweight... a vast majority of people are not afflicted by such conditions and only have themselves to blame. Stop making excuses for people and maybe they might hold themselves accountable.

it's a myth that you have to be fat if you have thyroid issues. if you take the proper drugs and exercise and watch what you eat you can easily be normal. i'm not saying it's easy though.

i have thyroid issues and take meds, exercise etc and i'm not overweight. my mom has a diff type of thyroid disease, and she exercises and eats right but she'll swell from time to time. as much as she works out and she gains weight is really weird

There is also the proven state of genetic disposition.

It basically goes along these lines. Until the late 1870's or so. There was not any sugar in our diets. We for the most part where a protein consuming society. With the introduction of sugar our bodies changed. Those who through the generations either could process this sugar stayed thin. Those who could not become heavy. This is why the low-carb diets work for the heavy set. It eliminates sugars and complex sugars (carbs). And on these low carb diets caloric intake makes little difference. Ketones (Spelling?) are produced that make you lose weight quicker than fasting.

Absolutely right. People sometimes don't realize that airlines are very specific and anal (and for good reason) about max takeoff weight.

I agree I was just saying that those being charged extra were upset and were claiming it was discriminatory.

my aunt had similar issues. went to a specialist in LA and got the right drug mix. it's wasn't an easy process though.

Obesity is a big problem in our country (no pun intended) and a majority of it is due to diet and exercise. However there are people out there who have health issues causing their obesity. It's very difficult to lose weight, especially for women. We are built differently than men. Bama doesn't understand ANY of that.
