Wait, so...you're telling me that Lane Kiffin wasn't a renegade recruiter that was going to bring us down SMU style?

Not buying.

This is good news if true. So if the bball team receives no penalties can we fire ccm and hire someone else. Sorry had to say it.

firing him was the only option. i'm talking about those who already make excuses for 'zo based on the supposed mess we were going to be in caused by pearl.

It's not Pearl's NCAA mess that will give people plenty of excuses for Martin for awhile. It's Pearl's pathetic leftover roster.

from ESPN article....

Sources told ESPN.com's Chris Low that Tennessee will receive no additional penalties in football or basketball other than what was self-reported for the institution. Prior to appearing before the Committee on Infractions in June, the school had self-imposed two years of probation, including self-imposed penalties for both football and men's basketball. In addition, the sources said, two major violations that the football program was originally facing were found to be secondary and former coach Lane Kiffin will not face any further sanctions.

Sources: Bruce Pearl, ex-Tennessee Volunteers coach, to receive show-cause penalty - ESPN

great news.

now where are all those who claimed pearl "killed the program", that we'd be harshly punished?

at least we don't have to hear additional excuses for 'zo as a result of what pearl left or caused.

Lawvol13 was one of them, if memory serves correctly.

And he started this thread.

Great news if all goes as reported. The uncertainty with the NCAA's decision pretty much choked recruiting and puts the coaches behind the 8 ball with other coaches using that against us to other recruits. Now everything is out in the open and we know our punishment and Martin and the staff can get on with business. Outside of losing scholarships, the uncertainty was as much of a punishment to the program as the punishment itself.

ESPN NCAAB Sources: Bruce Pearl to get penalty

That's good news

Cuonzo suddenly has walked into a pretty good job. Now the state of the roster may not be so good (and I'd be pleasantly shocked if we made the tourney this year), but we have money, facilities, recent success, and no sanctions.

It is not Pearls fault Scotty nor Tobias returned. If they returned however the longshot then Cuonzo would have a first year stepping stone and we would be hitting the NCAA tourney 7 straight times this year.

The roster is still pretty bad.

Pearl did some great things for UT basketball, but let's not kid ourselves about who to blame for the roster Martin will inherit.

True, what is done is done. Its Pearls past which gives Cuonzo his future!

We would have been had we kept him. It proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that firing him was the correct move.

+1

I think most of us had pretty much accepted that we'd get hit with 1-2 scholly reduction and were nervous about postseason ban, though unlikely. This news can do nothing but help our recruiting efforts.

As far as the basketball program is concerned I don't understand the celebration. We will be lucky to break even unless we play a lot of teams outside of div1. This whole mess has set us back for years to come. As I have said before I hope Martin can get the job
done, but, based on our history I just don't see it happening.

All I read in here for months (from a certain FEW posters) is how Pearl's NCAA troubles were going to get the program hammered. It appears those gloom and doom folks were wrong.

That remains to be seen. Some of those guys may take it to the next level now that they are the focal point of the program. On paper, this roster is better than the one Pearl inherited. Lets see what happens before we start making such highly negative statements about our players.

Pearl's actions caused the program to be unable to recruit quality players for the 2011 season, due to the investigation. No need to hammer the program more.

Had Pearl not been fired, our program would have been annihilated by the NCAA. So, it appears you're the one that's wrong.

i agree. the 05-06 roster didn't look that good before that season. give this team hopson and tobias and they're better on paper before the season than that one was. as they are now though this one isn't as good on paper.

They aren't close. There isn't one player on this roster that's as good as C.J. Watson, Chris Lofton, or JaJuan Smith.
