With the right QB, a decent OL, and quality receivers Heuple’s system is extremely difficult to stop. I wonder if last years team - with a solid QB but not quite the best fit - has made the so called experts skeptical.
Folks have said many things about Joe Milton. Some very positive, like he has a cannon, is a good leader, shows great loyalty, and so on. Then some bad, like he doesn't have enough touch. Plays timid when it's time to scramble. Overthrows too often.
Fact is, the #1 thing that held us back from double digit wins last season was this: Joe is not an opportunistic QB. I don't know if it's because he doesn't process the information coming to him quickly enough to take advantage of fleeting opportunities, or because he as a matter of habit hesitates before committing, or for some other reason. But he just doesn't capitalize on opportunities.
That's what Hendon did much better than him. Well, plus Hooker was a more elusive runner and accurate thrower when touch was required. But more than anything, he was opportunistic, very rapid to process and take advantage any time a part of the opposing defense got exposed.
I think this is what Nico can already do. Yes, even as a redshirt freshman with just one previous college start on his resume.
You know how some people can learn by watching someone else, while others can only really learn if they're doing it themselves? Nico seems to be the kind who can learn vicariously. And if that's correct, that means he already has an entire season of SEC experience.
I think that's right. I think Nico is going to come out swinging for the fences, and not let up all season long. I think 2024 is going to look even more like 2022 than 2022 looked like 2022.
I think we're all in for a treat. Can't wait.
Go Vols!
