Out of those, ideally I'd take Gundy. But, Gundy & Fisher are not coming. They may interview with us to up their contracts, but they are not coming to Knoxville. Let's be honest, Gundy already makes close to 4 Million & played at Okie state. Extremely unlikely.
I feel like gundy and fisher would be big hired. Smart would make sense and be a solid hire but just not as good as gundy and fisher. They key for all 3 though would be getting outstanding assistance
* Good defensive minded coach and Xs & Os guy.
* Great recruiter
* Has experience in turning around dumpster fires.
* Hire him for four/five years, get the talent back in, get a couple of 8 win seasons, and when he retires we finally look appealing again to the home run guy.
I chose Fisher, but I agree. I guess I chose him because he is HC of FSU. Traditionally, a bigger name than the other two. Plus, he should have the best, most recent contacts in Florida. Next to Georgia, IMO, that is our most important state for recruiting. If we are not doing well in those two states, we are probably not doing well on the field.
I like the fact that Strong is a defense guy, and I think he would recruit well in Florida too. We could maybe keep our offensive staff if we take him.
Strong, D minded coach that relates well with the players and knows how to recruit and coach in the SEC. Those are all necessities in this hire and he's currently got enough name recognition to help us turn around Dooleys below mediocre recruiting class, which will help speed up the turn around.
Jimbo or Charlie...These are the only 2 with SEC experience. I lean more towards Charlie bc he made his name as a DC in the SEC (USC and UF). It would be more economical for the program to bring him in and retain Graham, Pittman, Hinshaw, and even Chaney. Take a direct approach with the defensive play calling and allow Sal to work with the LBs.
I'm kinda surprised we aren't seeing/hearing a lot about Patterson. Especially after the Gruden rumors. IMO, after Gruden, that's who Hart should've put the full court press on. Butch Jones shouldn't even be a candidate so I don't know why we are hearing him more than Patterson. Well I voted for Jimbo, with Gundy in a close second. I'm definitely not a fan of Strong. For some reason he doesn't impress me at all. His recruiting doesn't look nearly as good as what everyone is saying. Something about Strong doesn't sit right with me. I think it would be a mistake to hire him right now, but if he does come, I'll support him anyway. GBO!
I just don't understand the facination with Strong. If he is hired, I will support him and gladly eat crow, but I don't think it would turn out any better than Dooley. The guy just doesn't have enough experience as a head coach and would not be able to recruit to the level that we need. It's the f'ing big east for crying out loud.
Dickson, I'm not a big fan of Strong or any others candidates really but Big East and like conferences are a proving ground for up and coming coaches. Saban, Petrino, Kelly, Sumlin, Meyer, etc all were head coaches at lower levels. My concern with Strong is he hasn't exactly dominated what should be inferior coaches like those guys did. 24-15 is concerning.
