Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

With Tara gone, Geno on his way out and Mulkey in sight of the end of her career I predict Coach Ivey will be, with Dawn, the top tier of coaches in WBB. I’m thinking of a five to ten year time frame.
Don’t want to put too much pressure on our young coach but will she join the next triumvirate of great coaches? Among current D1 coaches I’m not seeing anyone else step up.

Crazy thing is I think Kim has as much chance as Ivey of being a top coach for years to come but she’s only 35 compared to 47 for Ivey.

Kim is one of the youngest coaches and just landed one of the best recruiting classes. She is putting herself in position to be great for a really long time.

I knew that from watching her film and videos. She is talented player. She is going to be big for us next season along with Prawl and the twins. They can all play and all are top 20 players.

1000%.
Social media has been buzzing ever since Coach Caldwell, Coach Lazo, and Coach Tubner ended the early high school recruiting period with a blitz!
Great energy.GBO!

Sometimes the shooter don't match the hype. Look at those stats 40.3 percent overall and 30.9 from the three. Just another example where a player that takes thirty shots and averages 20 points is considered a star. To this point in her career a lot of shooting has been how she has average so many points. Her efficiency is rather low.
Her Efficiency is very low. Compare that to Caitlin Clarks numbers and they should not be in the same conversation. Watkins Freshman and current stats are on the top and Clark below that. Someone in here was talking that if the media would just cover Watkins like they covered Clark that would be all it would take for the same fan base and following. Thing is, when you do extraordinary things, the media finds you.

Kennedy Smith didn't play for USC and at least has to count for something of why USC looked as bad as they did. She would have made a big difference as a 3rd option.
You could probably say the same for Notre Dame without Maddy Westbeld and KK Branson, especially Westbeld, a fifth-year senior and they have to start a freshman at the Post position.

How can she with Watkins taking 40 percent of the teams shots....

That’s my point. Really poor coaching. With that roster they need to be working the ball inside out. Iriafen is a super talented player, we saw that last season. Marshall is also incredibly athletic.

Juju would get much easier looks if she’d give it up and get it back. That has to come from the coach though, a player like that is going to ball hog if you let them and she does. Not a good look.

What’s funny is the media didn’t cover Clark almost at all until they had no choice. She was selling out home and away arenas before ESPN would even talk about her. They were still sold on PaperClip being the generational player. Whack

How much longer does Raven Johnson get 25 minutes a game shooting 20% from the floor 0% from 3 and passing the same as Fulwiley but in more minutes?

I’m not sure what Dawn does there, I can appreciate the loyalty but it’s ugly for Raven right now.

I think the potential for KC is there for sure. I’m sure she’ll take some lumps these next few years but the potential is there. I’m being lazy but how old was Pat when she won her first Natty?
Ivey is knocking on the door. I think she is a lock. I mean who else is even close?

Pat was 35 when she won her first championship in 1987 (NCAA)

Important to consider how different the sport is from then until now, thanks to people like Pat. Anymore it’s almost unheard of for a relative unknown, young coach like Kim to land a big time P4 job.

When Pat started coaching they would hire about anyone and the level of competition was different. Almost all the teams they played were awful, there were about 3 good teams each year until the early-mid 90s when it started catching on.

Wow 35!! So she took the head coaching job at UT when she was 23-25, something like that. So ten years as a head coach before winning it all. KC has been a head coach five/six years? I could see a parallel track.
Thanks for the info!

I was rooting for USC and I would‘t use that as an excuse, because Maddy Westbeld and Liza Karlen didn’t play for Notre Dams either.

And ND was missing players as well. Westbeld would have made a big impact on that game. ND is just better than SoCal.

I’d actually say ND was missing considerably more important pieces yesterday.

That’s the nature of the game. Her absence didn’t make them lose by almost 20. Their selfish style of play, bad shot selection and turnovers did.

My Allegiance is with Lady Vols and that's it. I'm not one of these my conference is better than your conference ****. That ESPN started 25 years ago.
Well....you play us and you don't play UCLA. The wins against teams you play that are strong benefit you more (the Vols) than a loss by that same team to a team you don't play. Your loyalty is misplaced because you don't look at the big picture but carry on.

I plan on it.

I'm sure you will have your Orange&White Checkered Overalls on when Lady Vols play FSU and Iowa in non conference games this season.

Now you carry on with all due respect.

Normally that logic would.apply but not really in this case. SC is so high up there in the power rankings, them losing to UCLA would not realistically make a win over them by UT any less valuable in the the big picture. Any win by anybody against them at this point is huge, and if SC loses we don't have to spend the whole season hearing about their gadzillion wins in a row. I'm with knoxvol52 lol.

My sister graduated from Tennessee so yes, I do pull for the Vols in every sport until they play my alma mater, and she pulls for South Carolina unless they play Tennessee. We have that deal between us....lol...

I love people who can ride in that way because they enjoy the game and aren’t such homers that they can’t respect, like, or follow other teams. I actually ride for SC in the same way. It’s great coaching, and good ball.
