Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

Still upset at the outcome. Hate to see UCONN moving on. No chance Arizona beats them. They rely too heavily on McDonald to score and UCONN dominates teams like that. If you rely too heavily on one player you’re toast, they will figure out how to hold your best player to their worst night.

Really do not want to see Westbrook win a championship. I’m being petty, but she doesn’t deserve it. She sucks defensively still and is not a team player. She made several boneheaded errors last light and Geno was on her case the entire game. Hoping she declares for the draft so she can fade into obscurity. Tired of seeing her face and hearing her name. Wont be shocked to see her grad transfer elsewhere. She’ll never be a star at UCONN, barely ever a role player.

Well, to respond to your premise point to point, Texas has a not-so-much high powered offense, while South Carolina's defense has been better than Texas' against better competition all season.

Texas has allowed an average of 61.7 ppg to its NCAAT opponents thus far, while USC has allowed an average of 53.3 ppg. So one could use your logic and ask "If South Carolina is holding its opponents to 53.3 ppg, can Texas break 50?"....
Wait! Better competition? You mean the juggernaut that is the SEC? I think the tourney has proven otherwise.

I am not an Evina fan at all! Like, can’t stand her or her family...but, I will give credit where credit is due. She’s hit some key shots and for the most part has taken care of the ball. She is slow, a defensive liability and there is no way she makes a WNBA roster. I hate that they drew Arizona because there is no way that is even a competitive game. But I keep thinking it’ll be sweeter to watch them lose in the Championship game.

She played 40 minutes. When did Auriemma have time to get on her case? The hate endures.

Absolutely no way she makes a team in the WNBA.

Really won’t be shocked if she grad transfers to try to “improver her stock.” The UCONN fans can say what they like, but Geno doesn’t like her game. She steadily moved further and further from the ball all season because he did not like her decision making. Muhl going out is the only reason she’s gotten any minutes at the PG spot in the tournament.

The coach who barely plays Freshman picks two of them over Westbrook and we’re supposed to believe he loves her so much? No. He thinks she’s slow and that she pouts. He looked frustrated with her a number of times and she knew it. After she let Moon Ursin shoot that wide open 3 Evina’s face turned bright, bright red. As she ran back down the court he insulted her couldn’t tell what he said but it hit a nerve and embarrassed her. If he had any other option he would have sat her because she was a liability defensively all night.

She got lucky this was the year she was eligible. One year later and I don’t think she would have played at all. Would have transferred to be a bench warmer. Don’t see her staying for next season because that’s exactly where she’s headed.

If you didn't see Geno chewing her out, you didn't watch the game. He lit Westbrook up a few times especially when they were shooting free throws. Westbrook and Bueckers both got a good reaming late in the fourth. If you didn't see it, you only see what you want to see because it was there. That doesn't mean he is down on them, he was trying to get them to play better. That's all. His way of doing it.

They all count. Under two minutes with a 3 point lead and Bueckers was clearly fouled on a jump shot. And I question that dribble violation call on Westbrook as well. She got her hand on top of the ball even with the high dribble. There were countless no calls against Baylor in the first half. They had FOUR starters with ZERO fouls in the first half. Tennessee fans should be able to appreciate that.
This was a poorly officiated game and both teams got away with fouls that should have been called? I see Carrington complaining on Twitter about the final of many missed foul calls, but she didn't mention these 2:

I saw Geno talking to E and Beukers..,,, Beukers responded and took over the game and probably made 8—10 more points ! E just played on ? 🤷‍♂️

Westbrook will make a WNBA roster. KML and Tuck (until she retired) are on WNBA rosters and they should've been out of the league years ago.

It also helped that Richards was out of the game. The new defender got caught in screens giving her a second more to get up a shot. It was a split second enough to get a better look and she was money.

True, the UConn pedigree can take you very far in the WNBA. KML, Tuck, and imo Dolson being primary examples of this.

Agreed on KML and Tuck, but Dolson has had two all star seasons (one with the Mystics and one with the Sky) and is averaging decent numbers for her career (10pts/5rbs/2ast/1blk). This last season was rough, but I'm pretty sure she wasn't cleared to workout for a while after her COVID diagnosis in the spring. She's dropped about 25 lbs this off-season and is looking pretty fit at the USAB 3X3 training camp.

I think it is coming down to UConn vs either Sc or Stanford so that seems to be the three for this years National title. Arizona and Texas have been tremendous in the tourney, but how can they win against UConn or SC. Stanford has to face a very good team, but I think they will win.

Fair enough, she's one of those UConn players I'll just never like. Being real. On the other hand, unlike some folks on this board, I don't put Westbrook in that category of pedigree-riders. I think she can be a decent roleplayer on a pro team, and is certainly no worse off than Walker who left early.

From ESPN: WNBA mock draft: Which players have upped their stock in the NCAA tournament?

5. Dallas Wings: Evina Westbrook*, PG, UConn

We don't know yet if Westbrook will declare for the WNBA draft, but she's eligible as a redshirt junior. After two seasons at Tennessee, she sat out a year, and is in her first season playing for UConn. She is a 6-foot point guard with good size, something that might be an asset for the Wings, and has shown a lot of leadership and maturity. In UConn's first two NCAA tournament victories -- in which they cruised over High Point and Syracuse -- she had a combined 14 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. Westbrook can make a big impact on a game without big stats. (emphasis mine)
