Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

I don't know if anything is going on at Texas. Rori Harmon and Taylor Jones were also the one who called out their teammates. Vic credited them and Shaylee Gonzales for being ready to play.

Rickea also had her issues with Vic. She was suspended at least 1x her freshman year, and was also pulled out of the starting lineup on more than one occasion. But the thing him and Kellie have in common is that they were the two coaches getting most out of her. She was out of position playing for Novak and the entire team was a hot mess under McCray.
If the players are calling each other out in public and then the coach takes sides, I'm going out on a limb and calling that something going on.

I know RJ got in Vic's doghouse a couple of times but not sure about an actual suspension. Anyway, retrospectively she says she loved playing for him and he was certainly good for her game. So thank you Vic.
I’m all for holding your own teammates accountable but doing so in front of the media going after her teammates is a bad look. That needs to be handled behind closed doors… That can’t be a healthy team environment

While Harmon is great, she got put in her place many many times last night…. Sometimes it’s best to stay quiet. I would characterize her D lazy at times vs Andrews
For sure, she who throws stones should be careful. Seems like those players and Vic really lit a fuse on some team problems. Maybe it will end up being a feel good story when they come together and make the FF, but I'll bet today practice is going to be pretty tense.

Predictably, a result of the public calling out is a Texas twitter pile on against the accused players. "Gaston is trash . . ." Not sure how that helps anything.

I have a habit of checking attendance of sports that I like, especially women's college basketball given that I have always wanted it to become more popular. I have noticed a trend that has seemed to be peaking this year. For years, only one or two schools would average near or above 10,000 fans (until recently typically the LVs were one of them) and a few more might draw that kind of crowd for a game or two. Now, several teams this year have drawn 10,000 plus crowds and/or sellout crowds including several all-time record crowds: Iowa, Iowa State, Indiana, Purdue (sellout of 14000+ for Indiana game despite being mediocre), South Carolina, Lady Vols, LSU, Texas, Arizona (just 132 people short for Stanford game), NC State (small arena but has had sellouts), Duke, Ole Miss (under 10,000 but all- time record crowd), Notre Dame, UCONN (including a sellout in Hartford), Maryland (sorry to rain on your parade Iowa coach Bluder :)), Ohio State (ok, 45 short of 10,000 for Iowa game), and Utah (9611 for Stanford game for a team that historically draws horribly). As you can see, big time women's basketball draws well across many schools and all major conferences. This truly is a great development.
If the Lady Vols were a top 5-10 team, the attendance would be near the top. Oh for the good ole days.

UNLV in the top 25 is still cracking me up.

They are in a mediocre conference and played a weak schedule. They only played one P5 team in Oklahoma State and lost that game by 25 points.

28-2 doesn’t mean you’re a top 25 team.

Really haven’t looked at the AP and coaches poll much this season. It’s antiquated and should just be eliminated all together.

Pretty clear the NCAA is leaning way more into the Net at this point. It’s really the only ranking that matters.

Should be moving up in the NET again. Iowa State goes down to K-State. Oklahoma got really lucky against Kansas too. That 4 seed is on the line. Need a couple that of those teams in our 8 team pile up to lose down the stretch. Kansas almost did the Lady Vols and Texas a huge favor tonight.

Kansas was the one who beat Iowa State, and Kansas State almost did UT and others a huge favor.
Oregon State also beat USC.

re the Florida Kentucky ejections: Coach continues to talk on her pressers about team-building. I expect discussions on how to prevent anger during a physical game from becoming personal. The Florida player who was incensed had a right to be very angry and to await the refs to do their diligence, not throw a ball and attack. Long season of losses takes a toll I'm sure. much more difficult to team-build when the team has lost 20 games.

For which team? Women basketball or Dodge Ball? The player throwing the ball in that incident wasn't very good at either yesterday LOL SMH...........

I think you might be mixing up Kansas St. and Kansas. Last night, Kansas beat Iowa St. and Kansas St. almost knocked off Oklahoma. In any case, Iowa St. didn't drop (stayed at #14), so we're still at #15, though Oklahoma dropped 4 spots even with the close win (from #36 to #40).

USC's loss to Oregon St. dropped them from #31 to #32.

Iowa State's loss did drop them out of Her Hoop Stats' top 10, and we're now #10 there.

Unless something happened before the ball to the face issue, I didn't see Petty do anything...petty. When she caught the ball after the UK made basket, it looked like she was trying to hand the ball to Wyche, who bodied her up for some reason. She had the ball raised up to her shoulder, so she just let go and it brushed Wyche in the face. There was zero need for her to have been up in Petty's space like that.

Not the way I saw it. Have to disagree. No fan of Wyche’s behavior at all, but imo, the ball to the face was the last straw.

Announcers said only if ejected for fighting, not for leaving bench. Which was ridiculous to call on KY since it was all over their bench.

I believe would only have kept out Wyche and they're done anyway.

I agree w previous poster who said Petty rolling the ball up Wyches face was about half accidental but definitely fun for her. But the reaction was unhinged. I noticed Wyche looked at the bench before she changed. Sis egg her on?

And Petty with back turned the last person in the building to know what just happened

Probably did mix them up. I am still not sure how Kansas State didn't pull off that upset over Oklahoma. They were up with like 3 seconds in regulation. Looks like another one should get knocked out of the way today when UCLA and Arizona play today. Wouldn't mind seeing Oregon State knock off Colorado either. Let's clear that path for a Number four seed for the lady vols.

Not analyzing the incident as much as coaching players to not overly react to the physicality, cheap talk and 'ball in your face.'

I've spent 25 years involved in resolving conflict and this incident and many more being seen on the court are anger management developed preventive skills-101. Texas Tech, I believe had a player ejected at an away game and left angry and giving the finger(s) to the crowd. Their best player! She played in the next and following games. (winning is more important than developing character)

Coach was interviewed during a recent segment by the first LV sports psychologist who conducted interviews and profiles on incoming players for PHS. Current coach stated that is now being done by all teams. Thus when recruiting players with anger management issues "team building" is essential. as well as recognizing that not all players will be good fit.

I bet Coach E regrets those heels now!! She was almost down in the melee! Another coach grabbed her before she fell!
What a mess on the first night! I hope we avoid anything like that. I don’t think we have any real fighters on our team! Laughing thinking about Tess or Sara throwing a punch. Karo maybe? TK nope, might break a nail!

Seems to me that sports are reflecting what has happened to American society in that people have become a lot more volatile and easily insulted, offended and impatient. Oh, and they sometimes do ridiculous things in hopes of going viral on social media.

Agreed! That is not good. Kinda' like some of the things re Vol player fashions. Twitter is a garbage dump. Every coach should ban his/her players from reading twitter.
