Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

Oh Indy is going to draft her #1 if she comes out. Lin Dunn has practically displayed CC's Fever Jersey. It's going to be SO fun to see the crazy cult SC fans who adore Boston and white hot loathe Clark navigate those waters.

CC will easily break Pistol Pete's record, and sadly, the pre NCAA records are too obscure to mean much. I think she goes.

Here is PB's announcement. Would you look at the empty seats on Sr night? I'm honestly shocked to see this. Makes me much more proud of our crowd against SC.

It's not surprising, I would say. They were playing Georgetown. It's the Big East, which is a flatly pitiful conference for the sport. None of those games matter to them - they're just a bunch of glorified scrimmages. When every game's an 80-40 victory, there's just not much motivation to go. After years and years and years and years of pasting every team in the Big East, why bother?

Don't get me wrong though - feel free to poke and pick at any perceived decline, I won't argue.

Makes sense but still surprises. It's Sr night. They use to bother. At Iowa, SC and LSU, they still bother even with cupcakes. It actually is a symptom of a legacy program that is beginning to decline. We know this bc we've been living thru it here for awhile.

For most, playing in college is still a far better experience with better facilities, better travel, better crowds and treated like royality. That's what Diamond D advised Rickea around this time last year, bless her.

If it's just about competing and fulfilling dreams and being close to boyfriend and family, could see her leaving.

But if she loves the adulation of huge crowds along with the perks, could see her staying. And I would think that Big 10 reps would encourage everyone to chip in for record-setting NIL deals since her games are sellouts wherever Iowa travels.

Then there are more college records to be set if she's wanting to insure sports immortality.

Reasonable to think that alot of that huge throng of fans would follow her next door to Indiana. IMO the chance to play in Indy will be the deciding factor. Not only are they close to home, they are a franchise on the rise with great potential. It will not get better than that for CC next yr.

Also, again, for CC and a very few others, endorsement money is not a factor. Is there, will be there.

Serious question out of my ignorance of WNBA attendance:

Do college fans tend to follow their faces in-person to pro games (given close proximity to former college)?

Good question. Probably the closest comparison would be Breanna Stewart playing for the NY Liberty. Their attendance was great this year but hard to say how much of that was due to UConn fans making the drive. They're also a super team loaded w stars so hard to tell.

CC seems to be a unique case. Even the best college players haven't had the national exposure she has. Last one I can think of is probably Candace. CC has drawn everywhere they've played; there's sort of a freak factor, like "you gotta see this" about her. In the midwest they love their basketball and don't have that much else to do. The Fever already have a popular young star with national exposure in Boston and they're definitely on the rise oncourt.

I'd be shocked if Indy didn't get big crowds w CC next year. That perfect blend of circumstances is why I think she'd be crazy not to go. Could end up in Phoenix or Dallas next year!

If Clark can put on the same show in the WNBA that she has in college, she will absolutely create a paradigm shift in marketing the sport. To what degree it'll change, I couldn't guess, but if her game translates, they'll be able to market her as a groundbreaking experience unlike any other in the league. She bridges all kinds of marketing demographics. That's what you need to put butts in seats and TVs tuned to channels.

LOL which is why some of the vets of the league are already warming up their perfectly understandable resentments.

Will be interesting to see how some of CCs push offs are tolerated in the W.

Thanks. Never seen a Sr night after the game. Our elderly crowd wouldn't stay either, it's already way past our bedtime. That's why ours is before. Also in case we lose, lol.
This was the first time they have done this because they had 4 managers, four players, and they played 3 national anthems. Doing it after meant it didn't have to be rushed because of the impending game, and it also gave the players the opportunity to address the fans. Before the game there would not be enough time. I actually liked the change.

Oh definitely. The obvious parallel here is Michael Jordan - not in terms of comparative ability, but in terms of both star power and celebrity treatment by the league. A lot of guys resented him. Of course, he also ushered in the era of mega contracts and athletes-as-marketing-brands, something that has benefitted every decent player since. So. Might be something in there worth paying attention to, if I were in the WNBA.

Also agree on the push offs. Clark gets away with a lot right now because of her status (and probably the quality of the officiating). Even in her record breaking clip, she traveled multiple times, but no one cares because it's Caitlin Clark and she made a ridiculous shot. And if she can keep making the shots, they may continue not caring. A natural fit for today's rule-lite professional basketball environment.

Like it or not Caitlin Clark will be the face of WNBA ..

She is too marketable not too be.

This was after the game had ended and some people left.
There is a better video on the Boneyard that has a close-up of the players and you can actually understand what Paige is saying. Geno is in the background with a sly smile on his face. He said that although he hoped she would be coming back, she never said so to him, so this was the time when he learned for sure she would be returning.

This is exactly why I can’t embrace WNBA. The vets are all entitled, selfish and more concerned with their bank accounts than trying to grow the league. I can 100% see them shooting themselves in the foot by shunning Clark and then looking for someone else to blame when it all goes up in flames.

None of them are worried about her, rookies are always treated tough in any league.
