Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

I said it before, the WNBA needs expansion to attract new fans. I really didn't give a crap about the W until the Orlando Miricle moved to Conn and became the Sun. Attending the games made it seem real and it became my basketball fix until the college game came back during the late summer. Fans are able to see former players as they come in with their pro team, and the players are always happy to get the great reception. It's funny, that before the games the fans show their love for the ex UConn player, but once the game begins, they are the enemy. When the current UConn team is on campus during the summer they always find their way to Mohegan to support their former teammates. The pro team isn't as lovable as the college teams, more physical, more intense, but you do become a real fan if the team is close enough to attend. You may be able to root for players that you did not like during college, or a great player in college is now a member of the local team. IF a team is close enough to attend, you will become a fan. Again, if the W expands, the fans will come. If you get an opportunity to see a game, just try it out.
I get what you're saying, though I started following the league pretty closely when Chamique joined in 1999 and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame would host viewing parties in Knoxville. I don't live in the area anymore so I'm not sure if they still do anything like that.

This is the problem. They've built it several times, and the fans didn't come. They expanded from 8 to I think 16 teams early on, and many of the new teams (as well as some of the old ones) folded fairly quickly because of lack of fan support. They should be looking at the product first and listening to the potential customers before building anything, because previous Field of Dreams attempts have not been successful.

I think they are getting ready to launch a team in the Bay Area linked to the Golden State Warriors next year. I don't think California has been particularly receptive to pro women's basketball despite having two championship teams, but we'll see if the Warriors management can make it successful. I have no doubt that they will invest in it, but the question is whether or not the community will support it. The Maloof Brothers did an amazing job supporting the Sacramento Monarchs back in the day, but once money got tight and they couldn't sustain the yearly losses, they sold the team back and the NBA couldn't find a buyer so the team folded...which was a shame because they were one of the more entertaining teams at the time.

That's the thing. The WNBA LOVES drama and loves being at the center of it. They are also proving the old saying, "Any publicity is good publicity" to be false. It's like they need to change their league name to WNVA, with the "V" standing for "Victimhood". Let's see some positive press and stories for a change!

The Hamby things is a reason to stop rooting for players and teams, and unfortunately, the list just goes on and on. Many of the high-profile players really have become extremely unlikeable...even the ones that seemed to be nice in college. I saw the interview with Breanna Stewart where Shaq made the suggestion to lower the rims to appeal more to fans (yeah, I know...not the greatest of ideas), and she just came across as being so smug and condescending. They're lucky that clearly Adam Silver told the NBA/ex-players to play nice with them, because the WNBA players really do seem to push their luck in some of these appearances.
Some WNBA fans and players have a resentment towards the NBA even though they wouldn't exist without them. The WNBA couldn't take the criticism that the NBA and their coaches and players
take on a daily basis. Skylar Diggins is another one has came across a very angry and bitter over the years. Let me stop right here WNBA because I could go and on and on about them (pro and con).

Predictions on tonight’s games…bolder team is predicted winner:

Iowa at IU
NCSU at UNC
Utah at UCLA
OK Rooster, given that you are going with the home team for all games here, you are under some pressure to predict in similar fashion for the LV game on Sunday, right? (note the beauty of a sentence with 3 commas)

LV, I gave my thoughts on the LSU game Sunday earlier this week. I don’t like the matchups for LV’s defensively, but I noted UT has the better bench and expect a close game, hoping LV’s win that game.

LV, note that two of my predictions, though the home teams, are the underdogs. If you put me in a corner reference Sunday’s game vs LSU, I would be forced to pick a winner in what I believe is going to be an extremely close game, and then I would have to say I think UT by 1-2 points, but it’s tight. Key needs to have her best game, think she is ready now.
