South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley says Black coaches 'getting more chances,' hopes for more

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas -- South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley remembers when she was just beginning her coaching career and she'd look across the sideline and rarely see a Black woman leading the opposing team.

Staley buoyed by 'influx' of Black women coaches

What could have been Massengale would be great playing along with Key and if Green was here and Westbrook came back like she did with the Univ of Conn Artists we would be a Final Four Team
Don’t forget Collins and might as well throw Hayes in there just for good measure! 🤝

She needs to slow her Black role down, if that's her style of recruiting all Black players.

NCSU starting to exert themselves tonight, taking game over slowly.

Yeah just too much firepower and athleticism. Wore KState out finally.

Disappointed with how the post matchup was officiated. I agree there were fouls from Lee, but felt Cunane got her shots in and got away with it several times. Should not have be 4 fouls to 1 on two of the best centers in the country.

If I’m officiating that game, unless I see blood or bows I’m not interrupting. Y’all have at it. That’s what they both want too guarantee you. Elisa will enjoy the win but hard for her to say she won the matchup since she hardly got to play against her.

If the North Carolina job were ever offered, I would bet the farm she'd take it. She's at the age now where she's probably wishing she could live close to family, especially if her parents are still living. The inner drive to go home can be extremely powerful. Hope she gets back someday.

Vandy was not Shea's first HC offer. She has had numerous offers but Vandy won her heart as well as her head. We'll never know but she could have been offered NC or Duke and any other big name. She has commented that none of the other offers ever felt right but there was something special about Vandy. She has an AD that played on the women's team and is heavily invested in the program. They have a massive building program underway with all new state of the art facilities for the ladies. After listening to her talk about the school, the administration, the support and the charms of Nashville being so close, I doubt she is going to leave on her own volition. I am afraid UConn is going to have to look elsewhere. If they want to stay in the family and if Jamelle Elliott doesn't take it, maybe Berube or Mosley.

Fast forward 4-5 years…everything will look different. Promise.

I responded to Dawn constantly trying to attract Black recruits in the name of saying that "we need more Black coaches"...so a fan member said not to start. I'm like I'm just responding to her comment not starting 🙃
You think that’s what Dawn is doing?

You think she needs that “edge” to recruit and be successful. She couldn’t be this good because of being a collegiate All American, a member of the team USA and Olympic gold, a WNBA player and someone who worked her way up the coaching ranks the hard way as well as a successful college and Team USA coach? Her success is because she has a fake recruiting schtick about helping her fellow coaches and players? Man, I never knew that.

I have a friend who is a Div II official. I was complaining about how closely they called the post matchup in the SC-Clemson game earlier in the week. Boston got 2 early fouls and Clemson had 3 post players foul out. She said the points of emphasis this year for Officials is Post play and the defender fighting thru screens. There were close to 50 fouls in our game called. It was ridiculous. The players are going to have to learn to deal with it though. It makes the game very boring with all the stops.

I’ve never understood the “point of emphasis” BS. Why!? Just have a standard protocol and roll with it. Call the games fairly. Call excessive contact and let the women play. I’ve seen rec leagues self officiate better than some women’s college basketball games.
