Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

I am hoping we can keep up in recruiting because Mulkey will get the players and Georgia is getting them as well. Ole Miss looks to be making some moves on some top players as well. We have to get an elite bunch this year as when teams start getting the talent that SC has SC will start losing a lot more than they are now. I think it is going to happen with a lot of teams hoping were one of them. You can go up fast or down fast in recruiting.

If we keep winning the recruits will come. Have seen a few this season we missed out on and I think some of them are likely watching our freshman and regretting their decision.

Wolfenbarger is one of them. I think Goldwire leaving probably had at least some to do with her commitment. She was a player I thought we had a very good shot at. I thought she was grossly misused last night. Haven’t seen her develop at all this season. He’s content to pull her out to the 3 point line and have her jack up 3s. Haven’t seen her post up or take someone off the bounce yet. Occasionally she’ll get a layup in transition.

Conversely I think Ole Miss will have one good recruiting cycle here but I do not think they can consistently win in the SEC so that will wane. At the end of the day players want to win. Coach Yo is exciting right now but if you actually watch her teams they are not well coached. They looked much better last season because they were playing excited. This season the excitement has died down. The 4-5 games I’ve watched were pretty meh. Especially defensively.

If they don’t pull a good post out of the portal they are dead in the water. Won’t be above .500 in the SEC next season. I don’t see any way Austin stays another year and Kitchens is barely playing this season so I see no reason she would want to return and risk riding the pine again.

6’2” Andeja Puckett looks to be their next interior player. She finishes well but she is slooowwwww. At full speed she looks like she’s moving under water.

UGA will likely continue to pull good recruits from Georgia. Joni is nice and identifies with the players well. Sadly she does not develop players well. I maintain that I have yet to see someone improve significantly under her coaching. Tends to land really athletic kids that need basketball development, a lot like Holly recruits, but they aren’t getting over the hump. Especially their interior players.

Agree, but be judicious in bringing up recruiting. Around here, it's like chumming for carp.

The school he did not burn a bridge at is Texas A&M and guess who has a coach retiring at the end of the season... just saying might be something to watch out for is all 😁

For any who says well he just got to texas look how Brenda Freese used Minnesota for a year to get to MD and the ACC which was becoming a real women's basketball power at the time.

Fair, I just don’t see him going anywhere at his big age. Brenda was a coach on the rise when she did that. Vic has been there done that.

Coach at Arkansas may have to tell Wolfenbarger she is a post player she likes to hang out on the perimeter and looks really shy of contact unless she is the one fouling.

I’m curious to see how much our recruiting overlaps with Mulkey. I was always surprised but we never seemed to be going after the same players when she was at Baylor. Of course she recruited out of Texas a lot (and still will I presume) and it’s hard to get kids out of Texas with so many good schools.

I also think Mulkey is more likely to take players that are a little rough around the edges. Who may have had some disciplinary/attitude issues. Whereas I do not think Kellie has any patience for that. Kellie will help you become a good ball player but she wants someone with an inborn moral compass.

Kim will take a kid who has drifted off course and change their life. Sometimes it doesn’t work out though. She’s had a lot of talented ones she’s had to ask leave because they wouldn’t/couldn’t come around.

I just don’t see that happening. Could, but I have a feeling he stays in Austin. He already has Texas playing well and it’s his hometown. It his age he needs to pick a school and stick if he wants to win a championship before he’s done.

I agree. If Austin weren’t his actual hometown, I might think differently. Now, I do believe there was probably a time in his life when he thought A&M was his dream job, but I think that moment has passed. When people reach a certain age, most folks get sentimental about going home to where they grew up and to be “where my people are” — he’s there already.

She’s definitely not comfortable with her size yet. Her late growth spurt threw her game a curve ball. As she develops I could see her being a Jonquel Jones type player. She has to get WAY more aggressive in the paint and on the boards though.

Excellent post. That’s my impression, too.

I think she will still do well in Texas and certainly Louisiana and neighboring states. Have no doubt she will do well. I don't know how much she will recruit against the ACC and Big Ten areas I think she and Vic and others will be in some huge battles for Texas talent.

And it seems Kellie definitely prefers recruiting in ACC/Big 10 territory. Particularly because we hired two former ACC coaches. Kellie would ideally like her offense to be more similar to some of the better ACC teams. That’s why she’s trying to get some shooters. Justine is going to help us a ton if she can really shoot it as billed.

I do think most of the players up north tend to be a bit more fundamentally sound. Whereas players from the South tend to be very athletic but need more refining to their basketball skills. Just a general trend. Anyone else feel that way?

Speaking of recruiting, how ‘bout this gem of an old story that demonstrates the sleazy approach to it that Geno Auriemma takes:

Women?’s basketball recruit dismisses UConn

I’ve heard he made some nasty comments to Jackie Stiles when she committed to Missouri State over UCONN back in the day as well. Basically told her she’d be a no name and was making a terrible mistake.

I think Jackie got the last laugh.

I think we are making Vic older in our heads than he actually is lol. He is 60 kim is 59 and left a program she established to national prominence... Vic could go to A&M and work another 5 years minimum and take them up a notch or go like blair into his 70s. Some people say well kim returned home. She would have stayed at Baylor had her and the AD not continually butted heads openly. So if he isn't 100% comfortable why not return "home" to where he had a major finger print in their success. He also still has strong ties to the school😉 Not saying it will happen just saying there is a possibility especially with A&M sorta forcing Gary's hand they are going to want something to appease the fans or they need a great hire!

He was awful to Semeka Randall when she called to tell him her decision. Of course, the Connecticut fans have never believed it, saying, “prove it!” When it’s just one person’s word against another it’s hard to prove, but everyone who knows that vindictive little chimp knows this is typical behavior for him. He’s a drunken bully who cannot handle rejection.

Fair. I’ll say this, he looks like hell. I honestly thought he was closer to 70. Terrible 😬😂

That's such a sh!tty, crybaby, poor loser attitude. He doesn't even have to respond at all, and if he does, anything other than, "I was hoping you'd come here, but I wish you the best of luck" just reeks of low class. I recall he blasted Arike on Twitter during her recruitment as well.

I'm surprised this hasn't hurt him more on the recruiting front.

I believe it would if he didn't have the close proximity to ESPN as well as his pull with Team USA as well as (imo) the WNBA. A lot of folks turn a blind eye to what he has done, especially national media. The fact he is still in his position after calling his players dummies and telling them they could go to the ocean and keep walking if they lose during a time where folks are canceled for the littlest things says it all (again imo)
