Non-Lady Vol Game discussion

Does anyone else find it ironic the UT supposedly took the best players Oregon had to offer yet both Oregon and Oregon State are much better teams?

While the best player in the state of TN two years ago goes to.....

Nevermind. You get the point.

94-65 UConn. Ouch...

Well at least they won the 4th quarter. BTW I don't feel bad for anyone elses players. They were curbstomped. It's not like it was a buzzer beater. They appeared to not belong on the court. It shows how weak womens college basketball is compared to the depth and quality of the mens game.

You cannot beat UConn unless you have 5 legit basketball players you can rely on to play 30+ minutes per game. ND, Louisville, MSST, and Oregon all do.

SC has too many incomplete players that are liabilities more often than not.

Did I hear it correctly that ND lost multiple players to ACL injuries? How are they doing it? If this was UT, Holly would have to be inserted into the game.

Watching Oregon and ND and both teams actually run an offense and set screens. Are you watching Holly and staff.

Also people on here dogging SC in the UCONN game. How do you think it would have been if we played them - about the same or worse?

Worse

A'ja Wilson was the best player on the court and couldn't be stopped. Jennings played like she belonged as well. But the rest of SC were pathetic. That to me is the biggest difference between MBB and WBB. Top WBB teams can get away with having too many unsklled players on their team. If you can't shoot a basketball and are afraid to even if wide open (looking at you, Ty Harris and Anastasia Hayes), it's mind boggling that you can be a highly rated guard on a top team. You don't see that nonsense in MBB.

As well as South Carolina's bigs played UConn's just played better. They just had the more versatile set of bigs. I was surprised that South Carolina wasn't very aggressive defensively. Wilson and Jennings w/ only 1 foul each in a win or go home situation seems a bit off to me. I would have thought they would have been a bit more fired up.

I attended the game in person and have yet to watch the broadcast. In person, however; it appeared Dawn went back to the "take the air out of the ball" strategy that she has used before. The shot clock was down to 10 or so before they would try a lob or something into Wilson or Jennings. Everyone knows you beat UConn w/ guard play. Wouldn't have matter what Wilson, Jennings, & Herbert-Harrigan did because Collier, Williams, & Stevens more than matched their efforts on the night.

UConn was basically playing 2 on 5 the whole night. It was crazy. The guy behind me was like why are they taking so long to start the possessions. Is it out of desperation to not get creamed? I replied well since they are already down 18 I would say no. Dawn has stated publicly many times that she only gives her kids one game plan. So this is it for the night. He and his buddy then counted how many seconds it was taking them to score and then for UConn to just come down and within 15 seconds get it right back. If you are gonna slow the game down you still gotta play defense or at least make UConn inefficient.

You compare the production of UConn's bigs vs South Carolina's bigs:

South Carolina:
Minutes- 77
FG- 19/31
Points- 44
Turnovers- 3
Blocks- 1
Fouls- 4
Assists- 2

UConn
Minutes- 75
FG- 20/32
Points- 43
Turnovers- 2
Blocks- 3
Fouls- 8
Assists- 10

The biggest difference was fouls and assists. UConn was more aggressive and the more versatile team. South Carolina's bigs weren't even looking to pass and maybe that is because none of their guards were shooting really well anyway. Most of the points scored by the guards were either jumpers or difficult drives to the basket on their own. Their offense actually looked a lot like Tennessee's where they would pass it in to Russell and then everyone else would just watch.

Just as I was going to compliment you on your analysis, you had to throw that TN jab in there. It's not like our offense. We don't stand at half court and wait for 20 seconds. (Truthfully, even when we should do that, we can't. )

SC's offense plan became pathetic about 5 minutes in. Once a quality opponent gets a 15 point lead, you can't try to slow the game down. SC was the one behind and needed to score quickly and try to get stops. They needed more possessions not less.

When a team shoots 10 threes in one half and make 90% of them that is too much to overcome. SC shot 50% and that still didn't matter, as UCONN separated themselves with 27 points on 3 pointers. I don't think there is a team left that can stop them. Too much of a machine.

As to SC we had a pretty good year and overachieved considering we lost 3 players to the WNBA, 2 guards to injury, failed to get one elgible, and made the Elite 8 with a team full of Sophomores and Freshmen. We literally had a 3 guard rotation for much of the year. Who does that?? I think we'll be much improved next year with better guard play and adequate forwards who can score. A lot of people expect us to fall off the map but I think we'll be very good once again.

I think you’ll be pretty good too.. Do you think UVA makes a run for Staley?

SC lost their first trip down court when they tried to play their offense to slow down UCONN/limit their possession instead of playing their game.

Holding the ball for 15/20 seconds before making a decision on what to do was troubling because it wasn't how they play. IMO they played to not get embarrased/blown out and that is indeed what happened.

South Carolina is losing their best player in program history by a mile. They're not going to be better....

Thats your opinion. Of course we lose our best player but winning is about TEAM. There will be no superstar next year so ball movement and chemistry should be better. Good guards and good forwards so I expect us to be good.

Next year will look much different for a lot of teams in the SEC. We lose Russell, Nared and Dunbar. USC loses Wilson, MSST loses almost everyone and TXAM loses critical pieces also. I look forward to how it all shakes out.

A&M seems to have a bright future, they bring back their top guards, and they have a RS center that will fill Hillsman position. A&M will be a top 3 team for sure next year. Carter will get better and better each year.

Correct, she never had any intention of attending Tennessee. Why is another question.

From a 2014 Tom Kraeger article writing for the Gannett Tennessee.
“Coach Auriemma knew my desire in college,” Dangerfield said. “He knew I want to win. That was a selling point for me.”

I think she was offered by UT but chose UConn after a visit.

She also said growing up she always wanted to go to UCONN since she was little.
