Why is the Big 10 so effed up?
Good question - what is wrong with the Big10 culture?
Penn St - Sandusky, pedophilia
Michigan - sex abuse by sports team doctor
Michigan State - sex abuse by sports team doctor
Ohio State - sex abuse by sports team doctor
Northwestern - sexual hazing of football team
Half the teams in the conference with institutionalized sexual assault cases spanning many years and many victims.

Here’s a larger question. Jim Phillips, the commissioner of the ACC, was the Northwestern AD up until a few years ago . Was he ever aware that this stuff was taking place? If so, what does that mean for him ?

Truth be told they should have fired him years ago.

Butch Jones boat racing you by 40 in a bowl game & losing to Illinois State says it all.

But in all seriousness, Northwestern is an extremely place to win and recruit at. It's already hard to get the best players with the academics standard, coupled with the lack of resources compared to the rest of the Big Ten, so it's not exactly a destination job for coaches. Fitz has been a stable figure & the program had made some big leaps in terms of respect & facility build while he's been there. For perspective, Ara Parseghian coached at NU for 8 years & was barely above .500 before going to Notre Dame & winning two national championships there. It would take more than a couple of poor on field seasons to make a change in HC, but the hazing very well might be that catalyst. Just a shame that this all happened, no sympathy for Fitz should he get fired.

This is a really good question. There's no way that any P5 football coach should be unaware of something like this occurring in their locker rooms and, given the nature of P5 football coaches (even the seemingly-lighthearted ones), the odds of this just happening while they remain oblivious seems very close to zero.

ADs are slightly different, and I can see it being the case that Phillips legitimately had no idea whatsoever that this occurred, but that doesn't make it much better.

Yikes, can we just shut that conference down?

Well Catholicism is popular up there...though the protestant churches in the south haven't done much better.

Seems like the perfect time to fire him with cause and avoid a buyout. Dont know why they would “fight” to keep him

Assuming the allegations are true, you certainly can't keep him, but it's rather dismissive to say you don't know why they'd fight to keep him. He's an alum and the most successful coach in program history. It's not like they've been waiting on a reason to dump him.

Him being an alum is the only reason he survived after last season. Which major program holds on to a coach who has had the last two seasons he's had?

Yeah,he's a goner now. Trading out top 25 seasons with losing seasons as an alum isn't going to cut it when you're involved in something this bad,I don't care who you are.

Because in the south we tend to kill people for that crap.

Becasue in that programs history they have only had 4 seasons with at least 10 wins and Pat Fitzgerald has 3 of them.
Incredibly difficult place to win and Pat has at least won some.

Rightly or wrongly, he's been on something of a hot seat based purely around on-field performance the last couple of years. I think he's a great coach for them personally, but there has been some grumbling up there, even though they don't have high expectations and aren't a historically competitive program.

The length of his tenure and the fact he's an alum are the only reasons he wasn't fired the instant this story came out.
