Not so fast my friends.

1. You don't cite any evidence that Richt has a letdown after a big win. How frequently has it happened? What was the last time it happened? Saying it's one thing, backing it up another. Try to cite some actual games, and not just assume.

2. No one is saying that Butch is absolutely the savior...just that the second half was the best football the Vols have played since at least USCe in 2009, and maybe even uga that year, and that this makes us hopeful...hopeful...not CONVINCED.

Does that help?

Well said .. and I think the Vols could have suffered a mental let down in the second half but it appeared that Butch Jones would have none of it. :salute:

I want to believe we have turned the proverbial corner, but two things irk me. For your consideration:

1. Richt after a big win (LSU). I actually had a feeling this was going to happen so much so that I took the Vols plus the points and won. Look at Richt's track record. The Dawgs have a history of laying eggs when they have just beaten a big opponent. It has happened on multiple occasions. Couple that with the 14 point lead they jumped off to and they were absolutely primed for an upset.

2. The injuries. We did not outplay the number 6 Georgia Bulldawgs. We outplayed the number 20 (or some such) Georgia Bulldawgs (due to talent loss) who were reeling from injuries and hence shell-shocked.

For these two reasons, I am not willing to say we've turned a corner.

Butch's gutsiness on 4th down, the raucous environment, the play of the freshmen and Pig, and the effort given in the second half, though, are all tangible things that have me hoping. I think it is a bit too early to annoint Butch as savior of Volunteer Football. My confidence meter just ticked up though.

#2--- No excuse. They are a very deep team that has had the same coach, staff, and system in place for years, the stables are full. You want to talk about injuries/folks out? Oh I don't know, how about us? What if we had R Jones from day one at DB, Couch still in, Saulsberry still in, Maggitt playing from day one, Lane in, plus all the freshman we are playing?
People are not letting us use this as an excuse, so why should a more established, higher ranked program get an excuse? Meh.

Then explain to me the "delay of game" call on the Georgia defense when we were going to punt? If the zebras were wanting Georgia to win that game, that call (which is very very odd and unusual to say the least) never happens. Refs make bad calls against everybody - it's part of the game as coaches and players (who make mistakes themselves during a game) understand.

Did you watch the 2004 SECCG? Just curious. It was pretty obvious. The delay of game call is in the rulebook. You can't try to simulate the snap to force an offensive player to move. I had a clear view what the UGA player was doing. Sure, that is a call that went for us, but there were many others that didn't. Do you think Richt or Muschamp would have gotten the same penalty as CBJ? You can judge- maybe...maybe not. Just doesn't happen very often. I have no doubt in my mind that the SEC wants certain teams to perform well every year. Now, do they actually show favoritism? That is up for debate. Maybe one day soon we will start 5-0 and get those calls.

They've turrned the corner - but won't finish as strong as some might think. They could easily upset SC and not even play as well as they did.

Yet you've gotta remember that the schedule gets a little easier. Instead of 3 definite losses out of 6 games now you've only got 1 out of 6 with SC looking winnable. They should perform better by default.

Haven't we had players out every game? Why is it our own fans put us down for hanging in there with a team with players out?

I've had it. I'm sick and tired of these idiots posting on here claiming we only won because GA was banged up. 1. We also had players hurt too. Maggitt and lane say thanks for remembering them when you cry in your breast milk. 2. Their defense gave up 31 points, they weren't hit with the injury bug. 3. That's football. If you can't stand the injuries then take up watching golf

I guess since they still won, on the road, despite 4 of the top 6 WRs being out and the top two RBs being out and missing two in the secondary, they can stand the injuries. Yes, it is part of football but it still made a huge difference in the game and there's no way around that. UT still had their top RB and they still had most every WR they could throw out there.

true re biggest disappointment, plus it highlights my biggest overall concern.

in his 13 year tenure, saint richt has fired exactly two assistants. they both now coach for UT. on defense.

Can't consider this...coaching staffs across America are filled with coaches who were fired from previous jobs. Even Belichick got canned in Cleveland. Sometimes, the fit just isn't right...

We were missing 4 big time contributors as well. We absolutely turned the corner and I think we see the same results on the game if both teams were at full strength.

We were missing:

Couch
Saulsberry
Lane
Maggitt.

Don't forget to mention:

Riyahd Jones
Mike Williams

That have been out all year. Though Toney/Swafford have played well they're walk-ons and playing walk-ons in must win SEC games isn't exactly ideal.

And UGA had JR Conley (630y/8TD) and SR Wooten (464/6) coming off the bench. Both of those guys, due to more experience, would likely be starting for UT this year. That's not exactly like having to play a Soph, RS FR and True Freshman WR who had about no experience between all of them coming into this year.

2 converted Safeties at LB with almost no depth behind them?

Yeah. UGA took injuries but I think UT wins the roster argument. Plus, these WRs came off the bench and had Murray throwing to them.

Yea, every WR who has 5 games of overall experience. We play 3 freshmen at WR, and Howard just came back from injury, and he is a sophomore.

We are simply saying that you can't complain to us about injuries and depth. Maybe if you beat UF with those players. But, not us. On the run to go up 7 late, we had Stocstill in the game, and I just found out who he is this past week before the game- walk-on. We had true freshmen and walk-ons all over the field.

Why? Make a counterpoint.

We had injuries also to some of our top players. Georgia is considered to be a national title contender and we hardly have he depth that they do. Bottom line out guys played their tails off against Georgia and I'm damn proud of them. I felt much better of the Georgia loss than the south Alabama win surprisingly. I want to win every game as a fan obviously but the effort Saturday was what I was craving so bad.

Don't forget that the Vols are saturated with freshmen and walkons. And low on depth so play more snaps. For them to play as well as they did against a more experienced team, even if they had to go to third string players, says a lot. Will be interesting to see how these kids evolve year by year.

@TDDawg,

And our depth doesn't even come close to that of Georgia right now. Your argument holds no salt.

Have said this about the Vols all day .. UGA was missing two in their secondary though but still, Vols could have mailed it in after half time but not at all.

You want to trade secondaries? Be prepared to start a true freshman and rotate walk-ons at starting nickel. We have 2 injuries there.

Next goose-down soft argument please?

Lets trade Linebackers now. You'll love this one. 5 LB recruits in 3 years. 1 is a DE now. 1 is inactive. That's 3 in 3 years. Enjoy that.

I can keep going or you can (advised) just concede that you won't win the "our team has worse depth than UT" argument.

I haven't complained one bit. I have been more than complimentary about the way your team hung in that game. And yes, the injuries take a huge toll on any team, UGA included because it dramatically changes the game plan. Conley is pretty awesome but Wooten shows up sometimes and this was just one of those times .. it had to be or otherwise not sure if UGA wins. But it's hard to argue that when one of, if not the best, running back tandems in the country both go out, that it doesn't hurt the offense.

I think Butch should be patted on the back for helping those guys realize the situation as it was .. UGA took huge hits from so many offensive weapons being out of the game, defensive secondary SUPER thin for UGA, and it was still in KNOXVILLE. Keeping the young Vol team focused on that meant he kept them believing they still had a shot. Like I said earlier, young guys like that can fold up shop quick but Jones wouldn't let it happen.

OP after the USCe game you will feel better, and you will also regret posting this. By the way, we have been hitting people so hard that we have been hurting them. Both UF and UGA will be a little gun shy to play us next year after the physical beat down we gave them this year. Next year we will be an more physical team.

really? REALLY? Trey Matthews was hurt but he is a freshman. Conner Norman would be likely replacement but he was hurt (and he is a walk on too). Shaq Wiggins played a lot, Freshman. Quincy Mauger played a lot, Freshman. Those two have probably less than three games of experience between them. Brendan Langley was in there, Freshman .. all of this in the UGA secondary.

In other words, both teams are young in a lot of spots. But seeing star after star get hit with big injuries DURING the game takes a toll on the rest of the team and that's a fact.

Fair enough. UGA is deep enough that they can withstand it. We will in a couple of years.

there's a difference in playing a freshman because injuries force it (UGA) and playing a freshman because they are truly the best you have (UT).

Why? Make a counterpoint.

Georgia has not suffered the attrition that Tennessee has the last 5 years. Nobody has to my knowledge and btw the vols aren't healthy either missing 2 starters in Maggit and Young.

They were deeper and more talented. No matter what Georgia shouldn't have been down at any point of that game but we showed resilience and swagger. Something I haven't seen in a long time.

Don't talk about Richt laying gooseggs either when every game is a different game no matter what.

Have we turned the corner? NO are we turning the corner? YES so have confidence because it's growing within our team
