Not sure what I think of this concept

Per NFL stats. the NFL's 50-yard field goal percentage was around 72%. This is almost double the success rate from 1984.
There have been 40 successful 60-yard field goals in the NFL since 1960. 33 of those have occurred since 2009, and half have come since 2019.

I think that they should just leave everything as it is. The new NFL kickoff rule is the dumbest change ever, and I'd hate to see it trickle down to CFB. The way I see it, if a kicker goes out and practices his butt off every day and is able to smoke a 60 yarder then his hard work is rewarded. Besides, plenty of kickers also miss.

What does it matter if guys can drill a 60? Sounds like more commercial breaks while kicks are reviewed.

This as well. I can't help but feel like the powers that would be would use a rule such as this to include more advertising. Just like the running clock rule in CFB, it wasn't for "player safety", it was used so that they could shorten playing time, but keep the time slot the same way and add more commercial breaks.

Why not motorize the goal post side to side but also include an extremely difficult to hit bonus target for extra points?

Motorizing the goal post would add an additional element of timing the snap, hold and kick.

I saw where the NFL was thinking of tweeking field goals. The article mentioned colleges might join. They didn't want to see kickers drilling field goals from 60 yards like they were extra points.

the goal post is 18' 6". They wanted to add a second goal post 4 to 5 feet more narrow on each side. Between the small posts and get your 3 pts, between the outer posts and get 1. Extra points had to go between the smaller posts.

Idea was to make longer field goals harder since everyone is kicking basically 60 yarders now. Plus make teams go for it on 4th down more often.

Talk about brutal, down 2 on the 30, 4th and 2 with 3 or 4 minutes left......kick it? Might only get 1 and still be down. Go for it?

Could be stupid, could be interesting....kinda makes sense...the tours made our golf courses way longer because guys hit it a ton now. Augusta "Tiger proofed" the Masters. Guess games must adapt to bigger, stronger, faster, with more precise training.
Interesting.

When basketball was invented, the inventor set the rim at 10 feet because it was not intended to be played above the rim. Today there are players that can touch the top of the back board. There have been past discussions about raising the goal to as high as 12 feet. But it has never gained traction.

For the college game, let's start with following the NFL and move the PAT back 10yds.
Leave FG attempts alone for now.

NFL should test the waters with this double goal post idea in the preseason - much like thayt have doen other concepts - to see if it works and wht kind of headaches it will cause.

FWIW - it's going to make tearing down the goal posts after a historic win A LOT more difficult !!!

Remember they did move the extra a point back a few years ago. As I said, the tournament course I am on have gotten substantially longer

Yeah texas missed 2FGs in regulation vs ASU then the game ended up going to overtime.

Of course if the crooked refs actually called Targeting on that helmet to facemask only hit that damn near took the ASU players head off with 56 seconds left...ASU would have likely won the game in regulation. They should have had the ball at the texas 40yd line with 56 seconds on the clock and their 1 remaining timeout. Texas defense was gassed and Skattebo was unstoppable with over 250yds of offense for ASU by that point. ASU got robbed...if that was a Tennessee WR we would still be raising Cain about that no-call.

Yeah but 50+ look easy nowadays....

Until you need that too good kicker to miss from 40 to keep from getting beat
Kicks of 50 or more yards now have a success rate of 72 percent (2024), nearly double the rate in 1984.

That's a record for the league — an astonishing one, given that the odds of making such field goals were worse than a coin toss as recently as 2007

Are NFL kickers getting too good?

How has the football itself changed over the years? Improved techniques? They can change the goal post all they want, kickers will adapt.

They are professional kickers in the NFL, they work their craft constantly. It looks easy for them because it’s what they do.

Just about every rule change the past 30+ years has prioritized keeping offensive players(primarily QB's) healthy and increasing scoring.

Even if it's just FG's, they won't make any changes that could decrease scoring outputs.

The way to slow field goals down is to simply raise the crossbar by eight feet. Problem solved on long field goals
