Now It Really Begins

Honestly, Did anyone really believe that Coach Jones would have success this year after the revolving door of coaches and schemes that TN has endured the past few years. The truth is embodied in the "brick by brick" mantra by Jones. We all want "shazzam" but he and any realist knows that demolition and then a slow pragmatic approach is required to build a perennial power. The demo is about complete. I anticipate progress to truly begin now and grow exponentially as the old programs are buried and those with the mind of Jones are cemented in. Don't be in such a hurry and just enjoy watching the Rock Rise.

Didn't expect, only hoped. I always thought it would take 3-4 years based on the mess he found when he arrived.

It's not popular to say it, but I think Dooley did a great job with his first team. The fact that he took that group and should've had 8 wins if not for 2 screwy endings is crazy.

IMO CDD year 1 with less resources outperformed Botch year 1.

CDD is an incredibly inept fool. But he had a much better supporting staff.

Well OP, it depends on how you define success. If you define it as beating UK and not becoming Vandy's little brother, then yes, I expected success.

If you define it as others have already stated above as 6-6 and a bowl, then that would have been nice since that was initially defined by the "Caretaker of UT Football" as an achievable goal. After all, a coach should never set unachievable goals; otherwise, you get what we have now.

Blind faith is not a requirement to be a "true" fan. Butch gets a C- on coaching in his 1st year. The Mendoza line for me this year was 6 wins. That being said. He gets a B+ on recruitng if he signs what he has committed.

B+ for the #2 class?

You seem like one of those college professors that makes his class way too hard for no reason.

You have to remember though that that team had some staff turnover from Kiffin's staff (Chaney, Lance Thompson, maybe one more). So there was some continuity there with the same OC and same scheme. Going from one staff's pro scheme to another staff's spread scheme is much more difficult.

Wonder what they say behind his back. You seriously think they would say something bad about their coaches OUTLOUD! :banghead2:

They bring it up and even tweet it. Your post would make sense if they were just answering a reporters question.

His ONE goal.

When everyone thought 3-9 Auburn would suck.

When everyone thought 5-7 Mizzou would suck.

When no one knew we'd be playing our 4th string QB

When no one knew it would come down to the Vandy game and Butch would lose his star reciever at the beginning of the game.

..... things change. His goal was already tough enough before all of the above happened.

Just stop! You make to much sense. You don't belong here.

I'm being realistic about the season I knew we wouldn't do much it being Butchs first yr but the way we played and lost that Vandy gm gets me to wondering about this staff coaching players up. It reminded me to much of a Dooley called gm. I just hope that they coach the players up better this yr coming up.

You are correct but the best part is that he did it with "you know who's" recruits and that flies in the face of one of the central themes of VN. Bashing "you know who" and well anyone else they can drag down with him.

Yes.

When everyone thought Florida would be a championship contender.

When everyone thought Georgia would have Gurley, Marshall, and their top three receivers all game.

When everyone thought Vanderbilt would have their entire secondary for the whole game.

When everyone thought Butch got it.

Things do change.

You are saying Butch no longer gets it? Is that what we are reading?

I would say Georgia set a goal for an SEC hampionship. Oregon probably set a goal for the National Championship. Things happen. Not everything goes the way you plan it.

Richt has been outcoached more times than UGA fans can count, and Helfrich was made to look foolish for the majority of the Stanford game by David Shaw. Having said that, I would trade on field results with either. It takes a special individual to meet championship level goals. Goals for six wins, not so much.

With all due respect sir, since you apparently are absolutely certain that Coach Jones is not capable of leading UT to competitive football. Please tell us what you would do in this situation. Either as a coach or AD administration. I am reading non stop posts telling me that Coach Jones is not doing the job but not so much what should be done. Please enlighten the crowd.

No sir, I am not absolutely certain that Jones is not capable. I think the mexican standoff that has become vn over the last few days in that anyone pointing out that coaching played a role in this team's poor performance at times on the field must be bashing and wanting heads to roll is foolish. Honest reflection is healthy. If Butch beat South Carolina, then he lost to several others. If our lack of depth, lack of talent, and slow players lost to these other teams, then they beat South Carolina. People are so quick to throw these kids under the bus, but the multi-millionaire coach gets a free pass. Kool-aid has been the official drink of this fan base for five years now, and it has left a bitter taste. Do I expect this team to win championships next year or the year after? No. Past performance is indicative of future results. I hope Jones gets it done. The recruiting class looks great, but until we are competitive on the field, nobody can be absolutely certain that anyone is the right person. Here's hoping it is Butch, but as of now, the jury is still out.

This is irrelevant, good coaches make adjustments to find a way to win football games. I saw none on Saturday against Vandy.

Don't get real excited about next year either. While it looks like a good recruiting class, they are going to be very young, many freshmen, and they make mistakes.
And next year, we replace Auburn with Ole Miss, possibility a little better, but still very difficult (it would be a nice time to get Arkansas), and Oregon with Oklahoma (again still difficult). I see 2015 as the year they start to move up.

I agree. Saturday was a very poor performance all around. But I still blame the QB situation for the most part. There is no adjustment for having a 4th string QB. All you can do is take away his throwing privileges after he turns the ball over a few times and rely on the run game, which is exactly what the coaching staff did.
