NPR Axes Juan Williams for Muslim comment

From what I saw on the weekend news programs everyone is critical of this, even the so-called liberal media.

I agree - the opinion is definitely in JW's favor on the matter.

Not as much "in JW's favor" as they are against the way that NPR handled this, from the decision to terminate his contract to the way in which he was told and given no opportunity to be heard on it.

The more I hear, the more it seems like ultimately this was about the fact that Williams was regularly on Fox. While I am no fan of Fox, I fail to see why that should be a problem for NPR. Its not like they are competing over the same demographics, right?

This is basically what I meant - not that they agreed with his statement.

I think the Fox factor was huge - it likely bugged some hardcore NPR fans who routinely complained about it and NPR caved.

no doubt in my mind the heads of npr were incensed he regurally went on the hated fox news. some dems (lg?) can't think even remotely be logical about fox for some reason.

The supreme irony of thinking logically about a place built on turning logic on its head !!!

This board is on fire today!

I respectfully disagree with so narrowly defining the things which dems are incapable of being remotely logical.

His routine appearances on Fox News lent the very thing which the other media outlets routinely seek to destroy or diminish - its credibility.

Does anyone else find this situtation to be eerily familiar to the Shirley Sherrod story (the Deputy AG who was originally fired for making what were racially insensitive remarks, albeit out of context, and later received an apology when viewed in the larger context of her speech)? I wonder when Juan will get his call from the POTUS?

it's a news network with a conservative bias. nothing more, nothing less. they are trying to make money. arguing there is some deep and more sinister motive is ridiculous.

hold up! Fox is in this for the money?

Bill Press is delusional as always:

Bill Press Displays Boundless Capacity for Delusion, Claims NPR 'No More Left Wing Than Fox News' | NewsBusters.org

Let me tell you something, you know what? I call NPR National Pentagon Radio. They're no more left wing than Fox News as far as I'm concerned. Look at the commentators they have on there, right? They're all right-wing commentators. I couldn't get in the door of NPR. I'm sure you don't appear on their shows either, right? They lean so far right. The idea that they're part of the liberal media, as if they were. Look, except for MSNBC, these guys control all the media as far as I'm concerned.

naturally, he said this to Ed Schultz, who is too stupid to even challenge Press on his assertions.

i also forgot racism and trying to incite violence.

Not the whole network, just the pit bull/attack dogs like Beck.

I remember back during the Clinton impeachment the GOP used the same tactic. They got a couple of rabid true believers to be the front men, to say all the ridiculous stuff, while they just stood in the background nodding almost imperceptibly. Guys like Bill McCollum here in Florida, who are now viewed as toxic and unelectable.

Same thing already happening to Beck with the backbiting from the jealous co-talking heads on Fox. Soon the rumors will come out. Probably sex or drugs, the old standards. And he'll hang on for awhile, ranting and raving. But fade into oblivion while the old guard count the contribution checks he fired people up into writing.

please explain specifically what you see as the difference between beck and olberman? except the part that beck is far more interesting and watchable that is.

it is absolutely absurd to pretend that this is a monopoly of Fox / Republican pols. Bat crap crazy.

Beck's whole schtick is to trade on vague fears that find their roots in the worst things about us. Racism, suspicion of others who aren't like us, being old and stodgy, uneducated, reactionary. He is a con artist, weaving into his political message a narrative that simulataneously warns his already uncomfortable listeners that the black man is about to take over and exact justice but that if they will only do things like buy from his sponsors and vote for the candidates he endorses, then white suburbia shall reign once again.

Olbermann is just wicked smart. He antagonizes people like Beck, and those who follow him, because he shows them to be the freaks that they are.

"Olbermann is just wicked smart."

next time you tell me you aren't a liberal i'm going to quote this. Hell I think i might make it my sig.

and I would love an example of beck saying the black man is taking over.

LG has previously stated that Olbermann's show presents nothing but facts and is meticulously researched.

WTF are you talking about. LG told us himself that he's typically a fence sitter.
